What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
If a pre-recorded video restarts, blanks briefly, or freezes when you switch OBS scenes, first check the Media Source’s activation and unload settings. If the OBS preview and other sources also stutter, investigate overall rendering load instead. The available OBS documentation describes these local-source behaviors; it does not establish YouTube as the cause.
Identify what is actually freezing
Before changing settings, switch scenes during a controlled test and note which symptom you see. A clip that starts over points to different behavior than a short blank on return, a held frame, or a preview that stutters across multiple sources.
- The clip starts from the beginning: inspect Restart playback when source becomes active.
- The clip briefly disappears or appears stuck after returning: inspect Close file when inactive, which can unload the file and leave a short reload delay.
- Several sources or the whole preview stutter: investigate OBS rendering and encoding load.
These symptoms are a practical way to narrow the problem, not a formal OBS decision tree. The OBS sources available for this issue do not identify a YouTube-specific cause. Compare the OBS preview with the stream output before attributing the fault to YouTube.
Stop the video from restarting on scene return
OBS documents Restart playback when source becomes active as restarting a media file when its source is in the current scene and visible. Its documented default is On. If the clip unexpectedly begins again when you switch back to its scene, test with this option off.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- In OBS, find the scene containing the clip and open the Media Source’s properties.
- Locate Restart playback when source becomes active and clear the checkbox.
- Switch to another scene, then return and observe whether the clip resumes rather than restarting.
- If the result changes, leave the setting off for that source. If it does not, restore your original setting before testing another change.
Labels can vary by installed OBS version; confirm the wording in your Media Source properties. OBS’s Media Sources documentation, published January 11, 2022, describes the control but does not establish a version-specific fix for every freeze report: OBS Media Sources.
Check whether OBS unloads the file while the scene is hidden
Close file when inactive is separate from the restart option. OBS says it unloads the file when the source is hidden or absent from the current scene to free memory. When you return, the source may take a short time to appear again. That delay can look like a frozen frame or blank video, but it is not the same behavior as restarting from the beginning.

- Open the Media Source properties and check whether Close file when inactive is enabled.
- If you need a more seamless return and do not need the memory saving, turn it off for a controlled test.
- Switch away and back, then compare the result. Test this independently from the restart setting so you know which change mattered.
OBS describes the trade-off on its Media Sources page. Do not assume that disabling this option will fix a freeze unrelated to source unloading.
Choose the right source for a local video or playlist
For a local recording, OBS’s built-in Media Source supports common video formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM. Its properties include looping, restart-on-activation, hardware decoding when available, hiding on end, unloading while inactive, playback speed, and color range.

VLC Video is an alternative when you need VLC-based playlist or extended-media support. It uses VLC libraries, so VLC must be installed; if OBS is 64-bit, OBS documentation requires 64-bit VLC. VLC Video has playlist looping and shuffling controls, as well as visibility behavior.
| Choice | Best fit | Dependency and scene-switch considerations |
|---|---|---|
| Media Source | A local file in a supported format, with built-in playback controls. | Check restart-on-activation and close-file-when-inactive separately; those settings determine the documented restart and unload behavior. |
| VLC Video | A playlist or a need for VLC-based media support. | Requires installed VLC matching OBS’s architecture. Its availability does not establish that it will cure a freeze. |
If the same file is troublesome, you can compare the two sources as an isolation test when the format and playlist needs make that practical. Keep the scene and test conditions consistent, and judge the OBS preview. Do not treat either source type as inherently more reliable without evidence from your own test. See OBS’s Media Sources documentation.

When the preview or multiple sources stutter
If more than the pre-recorded source is affected, consider whether OBS is struggling to render or encode the scene. Scene composition uses GPU resources, and OBS’s troubleshooting guidance recommends reducing output resolution or frame rate, simplifying scenes, and limiting expensive sources or filters when OBS cannot keep up.
- Make one change at a time, then repeat the same scene-switch test.
- Simplify the affected scenes by disabling sources or filters that are not needed for the test.
- If the broader stutter continues, reduce output resolution or frame rate to lower resource demand, choosing settings that remain suitable for your intended stream.
A single media-source symptom does not prove a GPU bottleneck, and the available documentation does not justify buying a new GPU or storage drive as a first fix. OBS’s Encoding Performance Troubleshooting covers general resource-load steps; its OBS Studio Overview Guide explains scenes, sources, and streaming setup.

What to record if the problem continues
If the checks above do not isolate the problem, gather observations from the affected session before changing more settings. Record the OBS version and operating system, the media file format, whether its audio continues while the picture freezes, whether the OBS preview freezes, and the OBS log from that session. These details can help distinguish a source issue from a broader OBS problem; the available documentation does not map them to a confirmed cause for this particular YouTube scenario.
The OBS Quick Start Guide says its setup wizard considers hardware and network conditions. It is useful setup context, but it does not identify a specific cause for scene-switch freezes: OBS Quick Start Guide.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep a pre-recorded YouTube stream running around the clock, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so no computer, OBS, or home connection has to stay on. It streams to YouTube, not from a camera.
- One flat price per slot for any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps, with no re-encode or quality tiers.
- Automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free, with no card required.
The monthly option is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo for service details, or start your free day.
