YouTube may automatically archive a live stream that runs for less than 12 hours, but it does not guarantee that every broadcast will be captured. For an important gaming stream, make a local recording too. Afterward, find the replay in YouTube Studio under Content > Live, then make a highlight, trim it in Studio, or download your own upload for external editing.
Choose a recording plan before you go live
There are two useful copies to think about: YouTube’s archive, which gives you a replay in Studio, and a local recording, which gives you a separate backup and source file. YouTube recommends recording a local archive as a backup. This matters especially for long broadcasts: streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. The guidance does not make archiving a guarantee.

Prepare an encoder stream
YouTube describes encoder streaming as useful for gameplay, overlays, and external audio or video hardware. Set up the broadcast in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. In your encoder, use YouTube’s Live server URL and stream key, then check the preview before going live. Treat the stream key like a password: do not share or publish it.
If you are recording locally through your encoder, confirm that the local file is being written before the broadcast gets underway. Check it again during the stream, along with the recorded audio and video. If the stream is important, consider storing the local archive on a separate drive; YouTube does not specify a required drive, size, or speed.

Webcam and mobile streams
YouTube’s archive guidance applies to encoder, webcam, and mobile streams. You do not need dedicated encoder equipment to use those streaming methods, but the same long-stream caveat applies: a broadcast over 12 hours may not be captured. For a mobile stream, YouTube also says archives can be managed from the mobile My videos page.
Find and manage the YouTube replay

Open YouTube Studio and select Content.

Choose the Live tab to find past broadcasts.

Open the archive’s details to change its visibility or delete it using the content controls.
Do not assume the replay exists if a long stream is missing: broadcasts longer than 12 hours may not be captured. A local recording is the fallback when preserving the full event matters.

Make a highlight from a gaming stream
For a clutch play, boss fight, speedrun segment, or other moment worth separating from the full broadcast, use a stream marker to help locate it. You can create highlights while live or after the stream ends.

Use the marker on the timeline to find the section. Adjust the timestamps, trim the selection, and choose whether to mute or unmute it.

YouTube says a created highlight is automatically published, so set its title and privacy deliberately before creating it.

Trim the replay in YouTube Studio
Studio’s Editor is the direct route for removing unwanted material from the existing replay without making a new upload. On a computer, open YouTube Studio, go to Content, select the video, and choose Editor. Use the trim tool to remove material from the beginning or end; choose New cut to remove a section from the middle. Preview the result before saving.
Check the limits before saving

The documented trim feature is for videos shorter than six hours. YouTube says edits made this way do not require re-uploading and preserve the video’s URL, views, and comments.

Some unedited videos with more than 100,000 views may not be saveable, apart from face blurring, unless the channel is in the YouTube Partner Program.

YouTube says that, as of June 2025, saved Editor changes cannot be undone with “Revert to original.” Keep your local source copy and check the preview before committing changes.
Download your upload for external editing
If you want to edit outside Studio, YouTube lets you download your own upload from Studio’s Content menu. Its documented MP4 download is 720p or 360p depending on video size, so it may not be a full-resolution copy of the original stream. Google Takeout is another route YouTube documents for downloading all of your uploaded videos.
An individual download may be unavailable if the video was removed, has a copyright or Community Guidelines strike, uses a pre-approved audio track, or has already been downloaded five times within 24 hours. You cannot use this feature to download another person’s video. After downloading, edit the file with the editor of your choice; YouTube’s cited guidance does not establish one third-party editor as the best option.
Check music and other rights before publishing
Before streaming and before leaving a replay public, check that you have the necessary rights for music, game-related clips, and other third-party material in both the live broadcast and its archive. YouTube’s livestream terms state that creators represent and warrant they have the necessary rights for live content on Google services worldwide, including music licensing rights. A game soundtrack or background track being audible during a broadcast does not, by itself, establish that you have permission to use it.
