If OBS repeats one gaming video instead of moving to the next, first check the source type. A regular Media Source plays one file; its Loop setting repeats that file. To play multiple videos in sequence, use a playlist-capable source such as VLC Video Source, then verify that its playlist contains the intended files.
1. Check which OBS source is repeating
In the OBS Sources list, select the video source and open its properties. Identify whether it is a Media Source, VLC Video Source, or the third-party Media Playlist Source plugin. The fix depends on that source type.
Media Source: one file, not a playlist
OBS’s Media Source is for a single selected file. If Loop is enabled, that same file starts again after it finishes. Changing this source’s loop setting will not make it advance through other files. For multiple local videos, use a playlist-capable source instead. OBS’s Media Sources guide distinguishes the two and describes VLC Video Source as supporting a playlist of items.
VLC Video Source: supports multiple items
Open the VLC Video Source properties and inspect the playlist. Make sure it contains multiple entries, that each entry points to the intended video, and that the paths do not all resolve to the same file. A playlist with only one entry—or multiple entries pointing to the same video—can look like an advancement problem even when OBS is following the list.

Media Playlist Source: a separate plugin
If the source is the third-party Media Playlist Source plugin, check the installed plugin and OBS versions. Its release notes describe a fix for failure to advance when the following video path was the same, including when looping a single file. The notes say plugin version 0.1.0 and later require OBS 31 or newer. This is specific to that plugin; it does not establish a general VLC Video Source bug. Check the plugin release notes before changing versions.
2. Set up VLC Video Source for a multi-video playlist
- Install VLC if the source is missing. VLC Video Source requires VLC to be installed. OBS states that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. If the source does not appear in OBS, check that VLC is installed and that its architecture matches OBS.
- Add or select the VLC Video Source. In the Sources list, add a VLC Video Source or open the properties of the one you already use.
- Check the playlist entries. Confirm that every intended video appears as its own entry, with a valid path to the correct media file. Remove accidental duplicates or replace entries that point to the same video.
- Choose the loop behavior you want. VLC Video Source’s Loop Playlist option restarts playback after it reaches the end of the list. It does not turn a single-file Media Source into a playlist. OBS’s guide lists Loop Playlist as on by default and Shuffle Playlist as off by default; check your installed build’s properties because interface details can change.
- Review Visibility Behaviour if the source is hidden. VLC Video Source can stop and restart, pause and resume, or keep playing when it becomes invisible. This setting affects playback while the source is hidden; it does not change which files are in the playlist or what Loop Playlist does.

3. Use next and previous to narrow down the problem
OBS’s VLC source implementation registers playlist next and previous hotkeys. Try advancing manually. If manual next moves to another item but automatic playback does not, record that distinction for troubleshooting; it is useful evidence, but it does not identify the cause on its own. The OBS VLC source implementation reflects the checked master branch and may change over time.
4. Diagnose the .xspf directory case carefully
A GitHub report titled “VLC Video Source only playing one .xspf file instead of multiple from a directory?” describes a setup in OBS 27.2.4 in which one .xspf file repeated from a directory. It is a dated report, not evidence that current OBS versions generally fail to advance through VLC playlists. If your setup uses .xspf files, note whether you added one playlist file or several media entries, and include that detail when seeking help. The issue report is useful context for that particular historical case, not a universal fix.

5. If the video still repeats, collect these details
The cause cannot be determined without details about the specific OBS setup. Before asking for help, record:
- OBS version and operating system.
- Exact source type: Media Source, VLC Video Source, or Media Playlist Source.
- VLC version and whether its architecture matches OBS, if you use VLC Video Source.
- Playlist entry count and the paths or filenames of the entries, including whether they are media files or .xspf playlists.
- Whether Loop Playlist is enabled and what Visibility Behaviour is selected.
- Whether manual next advances, and what happens after a video reaches its end.
- A current OBS log and the steps that reproduce the repeat.
