First confirm the run is still a record under its game and category rules, get permission to rebroadcast the actual video, then create a YouTube Live event and connect your source. Label the program clearly as a rerun: the runners are not playing live.
Decide what kind of rerun you are making
A “rerun” here means a live encoder transmission of prerecorded gameplay, not a live attempt by the runner. Choose whether to schedule a one-off broadcast or run a recurring program, and decide how you will supply footage:
- Computer gameplay: Capture the game on the PC and send it through an encoder. For gameplay, overlays, and production audio, YouTube describes encoders as a flexible option. YouTube’s live-streaming overview explains the available approaches.
- Console stream: Modern consoles can stream directly to YouTube. A computer-based encoder gives you more control over overlays and transitions; capturing console output on a computer may require a capture card.
- Authorized recordings: Assemble recordings you have permission to use, then play them into an encoder or an appropriate cloud playback service. YouTube’s official setup guidance covers live broadcasts and encoder connections, but does not promise that every continuous prerecorded loop is allowed or will stay live indefinitely. Check current YouTube policies and controls for your intended format.
A capture card is not a universal requirement. Consider a USB HDMI capture card only if you need to feed console video into a computer-based encoder workflow; PC gameplay capture and direct console streaming may not need one.
Check YouTube channel eligibility
Before scheduling, verify that the channel is eligible to stream. YouTube’s current help guidance requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, and says creators must be at least 16 to live stream. Check the live-streaming requirements in YouTube Help before your event, since platform rules and controls can change. Do not rely on outdated advice that every channel must enable live streaming exactly 24 hours in advance.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
YouTube live content must comply with its Community Guidelines and Terms of Service. A stream may be age-restricted or removed for violations, and a channel with a live restriction may not be able to evade it by streaming through another channel. Review the current rules for your content before going live.
Verify the records and secure permission
Confirm the exact category and record status
There is no context-free, permanent “world record.” A game may have separate categories, timing methods, versions, platforms, or rule sets. Check the relevant game’s current leaderboard and rules, and verify the run’s displayed time, runner, platform or version where listed, timing method, and verification status. Speedrun.com says submissions commonly need video or photo proof, that moderators review submissions, and that submitters should follow the rules for the specific leaderboard. See Speedrun.com’s guide.

For each run, record the game, category, runner, result/time, platform or version if specified, leaderboard link, and the date you checked its standing. Recheck the board on the day you describe it as a current record; rankings can change.
Get permission to use the recording
A leaderboard entry or public video does not grant blanket permission to retransmit the footage. Speedrun.com’s moderation rules state: “Do not copy or reupload a player’s video without permission from the user.” Read the moderation rules and obtain explicit permission from the runner or other rights holder for each video before broadcasting it. Keep a record of the permission and any requested credit. Speedrun.com’s terms announcement explains that users own their run submissions and that prior blanket Creative Commons permission for site content no longer applies to reuse beyond operating the site; check the current terms if you will reuse leaderboard material at scale.

Create and schedule the YouTube Live event
- Open YouTube Studio and Live Control Room. Create a new live event or schedule one for later. The event is the public-facing broadcast; provide an accurate title, description, privacy setting, and thumbnail. Name the program as a rerun and do not imply that the runner is currently playing.
- Put run details in the description or on-screen cards. Credit each runner, identify the game and category, include the displayed time and platform/version where relevant, link the leaderboard, and state when you checked the record status. Follow any credit terms in the permission you received.
- Copy the stream key into your encoder. In Live Control Room, retrieve the stream key and enter it in the encoder’s streaming settings. YouTube’s encoder setup guide describes the connection workflow. Treat the key like a password: do not show it on screen, include it in a public tutorial, or share it with anyone who does not need access.
- Test privately or as an unlisted stream. Before the public event, check the footage source, audio, overlays, transitions, and status in Live Control Room. YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends private or unlisted testing when you are not actually ready to stream publicly.
- Start the scheduled broadcast and monitor it. Confirm that YouTube is receiving the feed and that the visible program matches the event details. Moderate live chat and respond to stream warnings; YouTube can restrict or remove live content that violates its policies.
Understand events, streams, and recurring broadcasts
YouTube’s Live API documentation distinguishes the broadcast event from the incoming stream. In its documented workflow, a stream resource can be reused for scheduled broadcasts, while only one event is live at a time. See YouTube Live Streaming API documentation. This is a scheduling model, not a guarantee that an uninterrupted prerecorded loop will remain live indefinitely; check the current Live Control Room behavior for your channel.
Troubleshoot common setup problems
- You cannot start a live broadcast: Check channel verification, age eligibility, and whether the channel has had a live-streaming restriction in the prior 90 days. Review YouTube’s current eligibility page rather than relying on an old setup checklist.
- YouTube is not receiving the encoder feed: Confirm that you selected the correct event and copied the corresponding stream key into the encoder. Keep the key private; if it may have been exposed, replace it in YouTube’s controls and update the encoder.
- The wrong run or record details appear: Revisit the game’s current category leaderboard and rules. Update the title, description, and overlay to distinguish category, version/platform, result, and the date the standing was checked.
- A rights holder objects to the footage: Stop using the recording and resolve the permission issue with the relevant rights holder. Credit is not a substitute for permission.
- The stream is removed or restricted: Review the notice and YouTube policy it identifies. Do not try to bypass a channel restriction by streaming from another channel; correct the issue through YouTube’s process.
