How to Stream an Icecast Radio Station to YouTube Live with OBS

A practical guide to routing an Icecast station into OBS and sending the production to YouTube Live, with setup checks and troubleshooting.

To send an Icecast radio station to YouTube Live with OBS, first bring the station’s audio into an OBS production, then use OBS to encode and send that production to YouTube. YouTube supplies a server URL and stream key for the encoder; for a scheduled broadcast, you then wait for the preview in Live Control Room and click Go live.

What you need before you start

  • A playable Icecast mountpoint URL, plus the station’s audio format and any access credentials. Ask the station administrator if you do not have these details.
  • OBS on a computer that can stay online and encode the broadcast.
  • A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled. YouTube says first-time enablement may take up to 24 hours. See YouTube’s live-streaming setup instructions.
  • A visual for the YouTube broadcast, such as a static image or a scene you create in OBS. The radio audio alone does not supply video.

Icecast serves the station’s stream to listeners; OBS is the production and encoding step; YouTube Live is the destination. Icecast describes a station in terms of a mountpoint and source-client arrangement, and identifies IceS as one program that can send audio data to Icecast. See the Icecast FAQ.

Connect the Icecast audio to OBS

  1. Confirm the exact mountpoint. Obtain the full playable URL, not just the station’s homepage or server address. Confirm whether access credentials are required and what audio format the mountpoint serves.
  2. Build an OBS scene. Add the visual element you want viewers to see, then configure an audio input that can receive the station’s stream. The appropriate OBS source and exact setup depend on the mountpoint’s codec, URL, credentials, and operating system.
  3. Verify audio before going live. Check that OBS’s audio meter responds, listen to the monitored audio if available, and confirm the sound is not doubled by a second capture of the same program. Test the scene before connecting to YouTube.

There is no universal OBS source-menu path established for every Icecast URL. Do not assume that pasting a mountpoint into a particular OBS field will work: confirm the method against the station’s details and the current OBS audio and video formats guide. If the station’s format or authentication is unsupported by the input method you are using, ask the station administrator for a compatible stream URL or instructions for that setup.

Send the OBS production to YouTube Live

  1. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select the broadcast. Follow YouTube’s current encoder setup workflow.
  2. Copy the YouTube stream server URL and stream key into OBS’s streaming settings. Treat the key as a password: do not share it or include it in a public screenshot.
  3. Start streaming from OBS. Check Live Control Room for the incoming preview and confirm that both video and audio are present.
  4. For a scheduled broadcast, click Go live in Live Control Room after the preview appears. Connecting OBS alone does not complete that scheduled-start step.
  5. When finished, end the broadcast in Live Control Room and stop sending from OBS, following YouTube’s workflow.

YouTube supports software encoders as well as standalone hardware encoders. OBS is a software-encoder approach; a hardware encoder is not a prerequisite for this setup. YouTube describes hardware encoders as useful for external audio/video hardware and advanced production. See YouTube’s encoder guidance.

Do you need an Icecast relay?

Usually, no. An Icecast relay is a separate server-to-server distribution option, not a required link between an Icecast station, OBS, and YouTube. Icecast documents master-slave relays and relays for specific mountpoints, with settings for the remote server, port, mountpoint, optional credentials, and local mountpoint. Use one only when your station architecture needs it; see the Icecast relaying documentation.

Troubleshoot common failures

  • OBS receives no station audio: Recheck the complete mountpoint URL, codec, and credentials with the station administrator. The right OBS input method varies with those details; do not treat one source type as universal.
  • The audio meter moves, but YouTube is silent: Confirm the active OBS scene and audio routing, then check the YouTube preview before starting the scheduled broadcast.
  • YouTube does not show an incoming preview: Verify that OBS has the correct YouTube server URL and stream key, and that the stream is actually started in OBS. If live streaming was only just enabled on the channel, YouTube says activation may take up to 24 hours.
  • The preview appears but the scheduled broadcast is not live: Click Go live in Live Control Room after the preview appears.
  • The station works in a player but not in OBS: A playable listener URL does not establish that every OBS input method can open it. Confirm the specific URL, format, authentication requirements, operating system, and current OBS-compatible method.

Copyright and YouTube channel rules

Having permission to receive an Icecast stream does not by itself establish that you have permission to rebroadcast its music, speech, or other material on YouTube. Confirm the rights and permissions that apply to the station’s content and your intended broadcast, and review YouTube’s current live-stream and monetization policies before streaming. A continuous radio feed also does not guarantee eligibility for monetization; YouTube assesses channels under its applicable policies.

Or let it run in the cloud

This OBS setup depends on a computer and home connection staying available. For a YouTube stream made from uploaded videos rather than a live camera or direct Icecast relay, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Each slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price, with no re-encode or quality tiers; if YouTube drops the stream, StreamNeo automatically attempts recovery. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube and uploaded videos; it is not a way to relay a live Icecast source or broadcast from a camera. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
