Use the concat demuxer when the files have compatible streams and time bases; use the concat filter when joining requires re-encoding. “Looping” can mean repeating input during processing or repeating the finished video in a player, so the right repeat setting depends on where you want the loop to happen.
Inspect the videos before converting
There is no single format that every set of story videos must use. Choose a target based on the playback device or platform, and check each file before deciding what to change. FFmpeg’s documentation covers its inspection and conversion tools in the documentation index and command-line documentation.
Run this for each input file:
ffmpeg -i "story-01.mp4"FFmpeg prints stream details in the terminal. Record the video and audio streams, codecs, dimensions, frame rate, time base, and duration. The extension alone is not enough to establish compatibility: renaming a file does not make its codecs or stream parameters match another file.
Decide which properties actually need to match for your intended output. For example, if the player requires a particular resolution or frame rate, use that as the target; do not adopt an arbitrary universal profile. When dimensions differ, decide whether to preserve the whole picture with padding or fill the frame by cropping. FFmpeg documents filters for scaling and pixel-format conversion; the exact values should come from the source files and playback requirements.

Choose the concat method

FFmpeg’s concat demuxer documentation states: “All files must have the same streams (same codecs, same time base, etc.).” The FFmpeg FAQ on concatenating video files describes the concat filter for re-encoding and the concat demuxer for compatible files where avoiding a re-encode is appropriate.
Convert clips that do not match
If your files differ in resolution, frame rate, codecs, audio streams, or other relevant parameters, normalize the mismatches before using the concat demuxer. Set output values to the requirements of your player or platform. Do not copy a sample profile blindly: the target resolution, frame rate, video and audio codecs, and container depend on your inputs and intended playback.

For a basic conversion, the command shape is:
ffmpeg -i "story-01-source.ext" "story-01-normalized.ext"The bracketed text is explanatory, not a literal FFmpeg option. Select actual options after inspecting the streams and choosing the target. If you need consistent dimensions, use scaling while preserving the aspect ratio, then pad or crop according to how you want the story artwork framed. If you need to change the pixel format, choose one supported by the target playback environment. Convert relevant audio streams too when their codec, layout, or parameters prevent a compatible join.
When the join itself must include filtering or re-encoding, use the concat filter rather than assuming packet-level concatenation will accommodate different streams. Consult the FFmpeg command-line documentation for filter and encoding syntax appropriate to your build and chosen target.

Join compatible converted files with the concat demuxer
Once the files have matching stream layouts, codecs, and time bases, create a text file listing them in order. For example, save this as story-list.txt beside the clips:

ffmpeg -f concat -safe 0 -i "story-list.txt" -c copy "stories-joined.mp4"This packet-copy example is appropriate only when the listed files meet the demuxer’s compatibility requirements and the chosen output container can hold their streams. If paths in the list are simple relative paths without special characters, -safe 0 may not be needed; it is included here to permit paths the safe-path check might otherwise reject. Review FFmpeg’s concat demuxer documentation for file-list syntax and behavior.

Check the reported durations and watch or listen through the joins. FFmpeg adjusts timestamps as it reads the files in sequence, and inaccurate duration information can lead to artifacts, including at transitions. If the output has glitches, recheck stream compatibility and duration metadata; if the files require a common re-encoded profile, join with the concat filter.

Joining clips creates a sequence; it does not, by itself, determine how that sequence repeats. There are three different goals that are often called looping:

- Repeat an input while FFmpeg processes it: use an input-looping approach suited to the source and the operation being performed. The command depends on whether the input is a still image, video, or another media type.
- Make the finished file repeat in a player: use the player’s repeat setting. Whether a file can carry a loop instruction depends on the format and playback software.
- Keep a stream playing continuously: configure the streaming or playback system to repeat the prepared sequence; do not assume a local file’s repeat behavior automatically carries over to a streaming destination.
The right mechanism is not established without knowing the output format, player, and whether you mean input processing or repeat playback. Verify the behavior in the actual playback context rather than treating one loop flag as universal.
Troubleshoot common conversion and join problems
- Concat demuxer reports stream mismatch or output fails: compare the stream listings from
ffmpeg -ifor every file. Normalize the mismatched codecs, stream layout, or time base, or use the concat filter if re-encoding is needed. - Black bars or unexpectedly cropped story art: revisit the target dimensions and scaling choice. Use padding to retain the full frame with bars, or cropping when filling the frame is more important than preserving every edge.
- Audio drops out or changes between clips: inspect audio streams as well as video. Convert the relevant audio streams to compatible settings for the chosen output instead of checking only resolution and frame rate.
- Glitch or jump at a join: check duration information and stream compatibility. The demuxer’s timestamp handling relies on file durations, and inaccurate durations can cause artifacts; re-encode through the concat filter if a compatible packet-copy join is not possible.
- The output plays once instead of repeating: determine whether repeat behavior belongs to FFmpeg input processing or to the player, then configure and test that specific stage.
