FFmpeg’s “Broken pipe” error means it tried to write to an output that was no longer accepting data. It reports a failed write, not the underlying cause. The connection may have dropped, YouTube’s ingest may have closed, the stream configuration may have been rejected, or an earlier input or process failure may have left FFmpeg with nowhere to write. You need the earlier log messages and YouTube’s stream-health status to narrow it down.
What “Broken pipe” tells you—and what it doesn’t
FFmpeg maps the system error EPIPE to the label “Broken pipe.” In a streaming command, it commonly appears when FFmpeg writes encoded media to the network output and that output has closed or stopped accepting data. The message identifies the failed write; it does not say why the other end stopped accepting data. FFmpeg’s error table defines the label, not a specific YouTube or network fault.
It may appear as av_interleaved_write_frame(): Broken pipe or alongside a trailer-writing error. Those point to where FFmpeg encountered the failure, not to a distinct root cause. A historical FFmpeg-user discussion shows such messages after a relay had run for hours, but does not establish what caused that relay to stop: FFmpeg-user mailing-list example.
Find the first failure in the log
Do not start by changing bitrate or adding retries just because the final line says “Broken pipe.” The useful clue is often earlier: an input read error, a failed connection, a stream rejection, or a process event. Keep the complete output from before the first warning or error. For a fuller diagnostic log, run FFmpeg with -report; redact the stream key before sharing any command or log because it is the credential that allows YouTube to accept the feed.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- At startup: check the destination URL and key, the encoder settings, and YouTube’s preview or ingest status.
- At an input boundary or loop: check whether the radio source disconnected, ended, or failed to restart.
- After idle time or a long run: compare the failure timestamp with input transitions, network events, and process uptime. Timing guides investigation but does not prove a cause.
Record the FFmpeg version/build, the full command with its key removed, whether the input is local or remote, and YouTube’s stream-health status at the failure time. Without those details, there is no defensible single command-line change to prescribe.
Separate an input problem from an output problem
Test the two sides independently where practical. First confirm that the radio source remains readable and FFmpeg continues to produce packets. Then try writing a representative input to a local file. If that works, test the YouTube destination using a known-good local file. This local-file isolation approach is community troubleshooting advice, not a guarantee; see the FFmpeg-user troubleshooting discussion.

Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Input test fails: investigate the radio URL or file, source availability, and FFmpeg’s input-side messages before changing YouTube settings.
- Local output works but live output fails: focus on the YouTube server URL and key, ingest state, encoder compatibility, and outbound network path.
- Both tests work separately: capture timestamps and observe the combined run; the failure may depend on a later source transition, network disruption, or process event.
Verify YouTube’s ingest details and encoder settings
In YouTube Live Control Room, use the server URL and stream key shown for the stream, and inspect the preview and stream-health messages. YouTube’s encoder settings guidance lists RTMP or RTMPS ingest and recommends RTMPS for encryption. It lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate (CBR); and frame rates up to 60 fps. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. These are compatibility recommendations, not proof that any one mismatch causes EPIPE.
H.264 bitrate recommendations
YouTube’s cited guidance gives these recommended H.264 video bitrates. They are recommendations for the listed output modes, not measurements of your connection or a diagnosis of a broken pipe.

For stereo audio, the same YouTube page lists 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps as advanced recommendations. Check the current Live Control Room settings for your stream rather than assuming a particular preset is mandatory.
Check upload capacity and stream health
A stream needs stable outbound capacity, not merely fast downloads. YouTube recommends leaving 20% bandwidth headroom above the total stream bitrate and warns that a connectivity disruption can break a stream. Account for other people and devices sharing the connection, and assess upload performance while the network is under realistic use. See YouTube’s encoder guidance and its live streaming troubleshooting guidance.

Test before going live, then watch stream health and messages in Live Control Room while the encoder runs. A healthy download-speed test alone does not establish that upload capacity is stable or sufficient.

- Save the full FFmpeg output. Start capturing before the error; use
-reportif you need a fuller log. Remove the stream key before sharing it. - Find the earliest warning or error. Note whether failure occurred at startup, at an input boundary, after idle time, or after a long run.
- Confirm the input is still producing media. Check source availability and packet progress; where feasible, test the source by writing to a local file.
- Test the destination separately. Use a known-good file to check the YouTube server URL, key, ingest state, and preview in Live Control Room.
- Compare encoder settings with YouTube’s guidance. Verify protocol, supported codecs, CBR, keyframe interval, audio settings, and an appropriate bitrate.
- Check outbound capacity and network events. Measure upload under realistic shared use and allow YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom.
- For continuous runs, correlate timestamps. Log uptime, input transitions, and network events around the failure. A process restart policy may restore service after a process exits, but it does not identify or fix the cause.
Keep a radio stream running without a home computer
If the troubleshooting points to the need for a persistent streaming process, a VPS or hosted service may help with operational availability or network environment. It cannot correct an invalid input, wrong stream credentials, unsupported settings, or a remote closure. For a self-managed server, you still need to monitor the FFmpeg process and investigate its logs when it fails.
