But it does not automatically clear the claim: YouTube says the claimant reviews the dispute and any appeal, and a license only helps if it covers the specific asset and use.
What a stock footage license can—and cannot—prove
YouTube lists having all necessary rights as a valid reason to dispute a Content ID claim. A license and its supporting records can help show that you had permission to use the footage. YouTube does not promise that attaching or describing a particular document will result in a claim being released, nor does it publish a required license-document format. The claimant, not YouTube, reviews the initial dispute and appeal. YouTube’s dispute guidance explains this distinction.
The key question is whether the license covers the exact stock asset and the use in your video. A receipt or account record that does not identify the asset, or a license that does not permit the relevant use, may not establish the rights you need.

Content ID claim
A Content ID claim can apply a block, monetization, or tracking policy to a video, and the result may differ by geography. Claims usually affect the video rather than the channel. Having all necessary rights is one valid reason to dispute; other valid reasons include believing the content was misidentified or that an error occurred. Giving credit, owning a copy, or choosing not to monetize are not valid reasons on their own. YouTube’s overview of Content ID claims describes their possible effects.

After an initial dispute, the claimant has 30 days to respond. The claimant may release the claim, reinstate it, submit a copyright removal request, or let it expire. YouTube’s dispute instructions describe these outcomes.
Copyright removal request, takedown, and strike
A copyright removal request is different from a Content ID claim. If YouTube receives a valid removal request, it can remove the video and issue a copyright strike to the channel. Do not assume that the dispute process and a takedown are interchangeable. YouTube explains the distinction between claims and removal requests.

Counter notification
A counter notification is a separate legal request used after a video has been removed following a copyright removal request. YouTube tells users who included another party’s copyrighted material to confirm that they have a license or permission, and warns against false information or fraudulent documentation. It is not simply another name for a Content ID dispute. Read YouTube’s counter-notification guidance.

Provider documentation varies by asset and provider
Shutterstock footage
Shutterstock offers a Proof of License Request form for customers seeking a letter documenting an asset licensed through its site. Its video-license guidance says web-use clips may be used on websites and social media, including YouTube, subject to the applicable license terms. A proof letter can support your explanation, but it does not guarantee the claimant will release a claim.

Adobe Stock music is a different case
Adobe Stock’s YouTube instructions concern music tracks, not stock footage. Adobe tells users to locate a license code in License History and submit the code for each track used in the YouTube dispute flow. Its licensing FAQ likewise directs users to include the license ID received after purchase. Do not assume this music-specific code workflow applies to footage or to another provider.

- Read the notice. Establish whether it is a Content ID claim or a copyright removal request, identify the claimant, and note the matched segment. Use the claim details in YouTube Studio and distinguish a claim from a takedown.
- Match the excerpt to the licensed asset. Confirm that the claimed footage is the asset named in your record and that the license belongs to you or the account responsible for the upload.
- Check the license scope. Review the actual terms for the intended use, distribution context, and relevant territory. A provider’s general description is not a substitute for the terms of your specific license.
- Request provider documentation if available. For example, Shutterstock accepts requests for proof-of-license letters. Follow the provider’s instructions for the asset involved.
- Choose the accurate dispute reason and explain the connection. If you have the necessary rights, state how the license identifies the matched footage and covers its use. Do not claim rights to material or uses the license does not cover. YouTube says the claimant reviews the dispute. See YouTube’s dispute guidance.
- Consider the consequences before escalating. The claimant has 30 days to respond to an initial dispute. An eligible creator may appeal a reinstated claim; for a blocking claim, YouTube may offer “Escalate to Appeal,” which bypasses the initial dispute stage. The claimant has seven days to respond to an appeal. If the appeal is rejected, the claimant can submit a removal request, which may result in the video being removed and a strike if the request is valid. YouTube’s appeal instructions describe this stage.
Dispute or appeal only when you are confident the license supports the rights you are asserting. If its scope is unclear or the consequences are significant, review the contract and consider qualified legal advice; YouTube also advises seeking legal advice if you are unsure whether to dispute.

Keep a license record before a claim arrives
For future uploads, save the asset identifier, purchase or license record, applicable terms, and any provider-issued proof together. If you edit a video with several stock assets, keep each license record separately tied to the relevant footage. That makes it easier to identify which license applies if a specific segment is later claimed.
Keep a licensed video running on YouTube
A license can support your rights to use stock footage, but it does not prevent a Content ID match or replace the need to respond accurately to a claim. If you publish a licensed video as a 24/7 YouTube stream, make sure the rights cover that use as well.
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo keeps an uploaded video or playlist live on YouTube from the cloud: upload the recording, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not need to stay on. Each slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; automatic recovery is included if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
