To keep an internet radio station live on YouTube, create a live stream in YouTube Studio, copy its stream URL and stream key into an encoder, then keep both the program source and encoder running. The key is a private connection credential—not the radio audio, an automation system, or a way to stream by itself.
Before you start: enable live streaming
Your YouTube channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days. Enabling live streaming for the first time can take up to 24 hours, so do this before your planned launch. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility requirements.
You also need a program source that supplies the station’s audio (and any visuals), plus an encoder that sends the feed to YouTube. YouTube supports software encoders running on computers and standalone hardware encoders; it does not specify one radio automation product or a universal computer specification.
Set up the YouTube stream key
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Create a new stream or select a scheduled one. Choose whether it should be public, private, or unlisted. The visibility setting controls who can watch; it does not replace the need for permission to broadcast the material. See YouTube’s live-stream setup guidance.
- Find the stream URL and key. In the stream settings, copy both values. The URL is the destination for the encoder; the key identifies and authorizes the incoming feed. YouTube describes stream keys as being like the stream’s “password and address.”
- Enter both in your encoder. Open the encoder’s streaming or destination settings and paste the YouTube stream URL into the server/URL field and the key into the stream-key field. Field names vary by encoder. Do not paste the key into a public page, chat, or a screenshot.
- Start sending the feed and check the preview. Start the encoder, then confirm that video/audio reaches the Live Control Room and inspect stream health before relying on the broadcast. Depending on the stream configuration and auto-start setting, you may also need to select Go live in Live Control Room. Auto-stop settings likewise affect whether a separate stop action is needed. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
- Keep the source and encoder operating. An always-on broadcast requires the system generating the program and the encoder sending it to keep running. If either stops, the live feed can stop too.
Choose settings the connection can sustain
There is no single bitrate or resolution that suits every station: the right settings depend on the encoder, the video or visual layout, and the available upload connection. Test the complete setup, choose an encoder bitrate the connection can sustain, and monitor stream health while broadcasting. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts data into and through Google’s servers. Use YouTube’s live encoder settings and stream-health guidance for current recommendations and compatible settings.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Test the actual upload connection at the location and time you expect to stream; do not assume a plan’s advertised download speed reflects upload capacity.
- If the stream health indicates trouble, lower the encoder’s bitrate or quality and test again rather than pushing a rate the connection cannot maintain.
- Confirm that the audio source is reaching the encoder and that the Live Control Room preview has sound before leaving the station unattended.
Plan for continuity, archives, and rights
Outages and recovery
Test before launch and monitor stream health during the broadcast. YouTube does not promise that a 24/7 stream will never disconnect, so plan how the station will detect a lost feed and restart or restore the source and encoder. A cloud service can remove the need to leave a home computer running; it does not change the station’s responsibility to check the YouTube stream and its content.
Long-run recording
YouTube’s automatic archiving guidance covers streams under 12 hours; it does not establish that a continuous broadcast longer than that will appear as one complete automatic archive. If you need a full recording of a longer run, arrange an independent recording workflow and verify it before launch. See YouTube’s live-stream archive guidance.

Music rights and platform rules
Live content must comply with YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms of Service, and the station needs the rights required for the music and other material it broadcasts. The requirements can depend on the content and territory; YouTube’s general setup pages do not determine whether a particular station has the necessary music rights. Review YouTube’s live-streaming policies and secure the relevant permissions before broadcasting.
Protect the key and understand stream limits
Treat the stream key as a secret credential. If it is exposed or you suspect someone else has it, reset it in Live Control Room; an owner or manager can reset the key. Then replace the old key in the encoder, or it will no longer connect using the previous credential. See YouTube’s stream-key management instructions.

YouTube currently documents a maximum of 10 active streams per channel and 3 active streams per stream key; both limits apply. If you are running several feeds, keep track of active streams and which key each encoder uses. See YouTube’s live-stream limits.
Troubleshoot common setup problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not accept the incoming feed | The URL or key is missing, mistyped, or no longer current. | Copy the current URL and key from the selected Live Control Room stream and replace both values in the encoder. If the key was reset, update the encoder with the replacement. |
| The stream reaches YouTube, but it is not live to viewers | The stream may still need a manual start, depending on its auto-start setting. | Check the preview and stream health, then use Go live in Live Control Room if the configuration requires it. |
| Stream health is poor or the feed drops | The encoder’s upload demand may exceed the connection’s sustainable capacity, or the connection may be unstable. | Test the connection and lower the encoder bitrate or quality until the feed is sustainable; monitor health after the change. |
| First live setup is unavailable | The channel may not meet eligibility requirements, or initial enablement may still be processing. | Verify the channel, check for live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days, and allow up to 24 hours for first-time enablement. |
| The archive is incomplete or absent after a long broadcast | The run may exceed YouTube’s under-12-hour automatic-archive guidance. | For longer continuous runs, use and test a separate recording workflow rather than relying on one automatic archive. |
Or let it run in the cloud
For a YouTube station built from uploaded recordings, StreamNeo runs the loop from the cloud: upload your video, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; the service plays uploaded videos, not a camera feed.
