You can run a YouTube radio livestream with one still image and a continuous audio feed by sending both through a streaming encoder to YouTube Live. Create the stream in YouTube’s Live Control Room, configure the encoder to use the image and radio audio, test the full setup, then start the encoder and go live. The key planning issue is that YouTube may not archive a single broadcast that runs longer than 12 hours.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel that is eligible to livestream. YouTube’s current guidance says the channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
- An encoder that can send an audio/video stream to YouTube. OBS is one option; its official help portal is at obsproject.com/help. The exact OBS interface can change, so confirm current control names in the application rather than relying on an outdated menu path.
- A still image you have permission to use, and a radio audio source you have permission to broadcast. All live content must follow YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms of Service.
- A reliable upload connection and a computer capable of running your chosen encoder continuously. YouTube does not specify a minimum computer configuration in the guidance cited here.
Set up the static-image livestream
- Prepare the visual and audio. Choose the image that will appear throughout the broadcast and connect or load the radio audio source in your encoder. Set up the encoder scene so the image remains visible while the audio plays. The exact source names and controls vary by encoder and version; check the current OBS help or documentation for the steps that match your installation.
- Create the stream in YouTube Live Control Room. Create or schedule a live stream, then copy the stream URL and stream key from YouTube into the encoder’s streaming settings. YouTube’s walkthrough is Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder. Treat the key like a password: do not show it in the image, recording, or public stream, and reset it if it is exposed.
- Choose a connection protocol and encoder settings. YouTube recommends RTMPS. Its current encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for video; AAC or MP3 for audio; constant bitrate (CBR); and a two-second keyframe interval, which should not exceed four seconds. For stereo audio, the advanced recommendations list 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps. Use YouTube’s current resolution- and codec-specific bitrate table rather than treating one bitrate as correct for every stream: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
- Match the bitrate to your connection. Run an upload speed test and leave headroom so other network activity or normal fluctuations do not consume all available upload capacity. YouTube recommends testing before going live with audio and movement comparable to the real broadcast. For a static-image radio stream, test the actual audio path and final configuration; you do not need to add motion to the actual programme just to meet that testing advice.
- Start the encoder and check the preview. Begin sending the configured feed to YouTube. Depending on the workflow, Live Control Room will show a preview before you press Go live. Confirm the image is correct, the audio is audible and clean, and the stream-health indicators do not show a problem before opening the broadcast to viewers.
- Monitor the stream. Keep an eye on Live Control Room’s stream health while the broadcast is running. YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends testing before starting and monitoring the stream; connection quality and encoder capacity affect reliability.
Plan for YouTube’s archive and DVR limits
A 24/7 broadcast is longer than YouTube’s 12-hour archive threshold. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, recommends keeping a local recording as a backup, and warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. That means you should not count on one complete YouTube replay from an uninterrupted 24/7 session. See YouTube’s archive guidance.
DVR is a separate feature: it lets viewers pause, rewind, and resume while a stream is live. YouTube warns that DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours, and viewers cannot seek to a point before the live broadcast began. DVR availability does not guarantee that YouTube will save a complete archive after the broadcast ends. Details: Turn on DVR on live streams.
If you need a replay
- Keep a local recording if retaining the programme matters, and confirm that your computer and storage can sustain it for the intended duration.
- Consider dividing the schedule into shorter sessions as a planning response to the documented archive limit. YouTube’s cited guidance does not prescribe a restart schedule or guarantee an archive for every session, so check each archive after the stream ends.
- If you need one uninterrupted live presence, decide whether the live broadcast matters more than a guaranteed complete YouTube archive; the platform’s guidance does not establish that a stream over 12 hours will be captured.
Troubleshooting common problems
- No preview appears: Check that the encoder is running, the stream URL and key were copied correctly, and the encoder is sending to the intended stream. Keep the key private; if it may have been exposed, replace it in YouTube and update the encoder.
- Viewers cannot hear the radio audio: Confirm the correct audio source is active in the encoder and that its level is not muted. Check the preview or a private/unlisted test broadcast before relying on the setup for a long session.
- The stream health is unstable: Recheck upload capacity, reduce the selected bitrate if the connection cannot sustain it, and run another full preflight test. Use YouTube’s resolution-specific recommendations rather than guessing a universal bitrate.
- The stream looks or sounds wrong after going live: Inspect the encoder’s selected image, audio source, codec, CBR setting, and keyframe interval, then correct the configuration and verify the preview before restarting or continuing.
- The 24/7 stream has no complete replay: This can happen because YouTube warns that streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured. Use a local recording or shorter sessions if an archive is important, and verify each resulting archive.
Or let it run in the cloud
Instead of keeping an encoder computer and home connection running, StreamNeo can loop uploaded videos to a YouTube channel from the cloud. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; each slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price, with no re-encode or quality tiers, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or start the free first day.
