In OBS, place a Text source above the episode video and set it to read a plain-text file. Your playout or automation system must update that file whenever the episode changes; OBS’s documented playlist feature does not automatically send the current item’s name to an overlay.
What the label does—and where it belongs
A now-playing label is part of the picture viewers see, not the stream title or description displayed on YouTube. Build it into the composed scene in your encoder, then send that scene to YouTube. YouTube’s encoder setup explains how to send the feed, but changing the YouTube stream title alone will not put an episode title over the video (YouTube encoder setup).
Add a file-backed label in OBS
- Prepare the episode video. Add the video or playlist to the OBS scene you use for the live program. If you use OBS’s VLC Video source for a playlist, VLC must be installed for the source to appear. OBS documents that this source can play a list of files in order and loop it (OBS Media Sources).
- Create the label. In the scene’s Sources panel, add a Text source. Enable Read from file and select a plain-text file containing the title you want viewers to see. OBS Text sources can render text from a file (OBS Text Sources).
- Put the label in front. Position the Text source above the video source in the Sources list, then place and style it in the preview. OBS says sources higher in the list appear above other scene elements (OBS Sources Guide).
- Connect episode changes to the file. Arrange for your scheduling or playout system—or another process you control—to replace the file’s contents with the next episode title when playback changes. This update mechanism is a workflow you must provide; the cited OBS documentation does not establish an automatic connection between a VLC playlist and a Text source.
- Test the transition. Preview the scene and change the file to confirm the displayed title updates, remains readable over the video, and does not obscure important content. Test a real episode change and a restart of the playout process before relying on the overlay continuously.
- Send the scene to YouTube. In YouTube Studio, get the stream’s server URL and stream key, enter them in your encoder, configure the stream, and start sending the composed feed. YouTube’s instruction is: “To start streaming, enter your YouTube Live server URL and stream key into your encoder.” (YouTube encoder instructions)
Choose how the label receives episode metadata
| Approach | What it offers | What you still need |
|---|---|---|
| OBS Text source reading a file | A straightforward text label with a simple update target. | A process that writes the current episode title to the file and updates it on each change. |
| OBS Browser source | A webpage or local page can render a more designed overlay; OBS supports both as Browser sources (OBS Browser Source). | A webpage and a reliable way to deliver the current episode title to it. The cited documentation does not identify a feed or automatic integration for a particular playout system. |
Before choosing, check how your playout system exposes current-item metadata, what happens to the label after a restart, how legible it is on a small screen, how quickly changes appear, and whether you can correct a wrong title without interrupting the stream. These are practical checks, not documented performance guarantees.
Do not assume a playlist supplies the label
OBS documents that its VLC Video source can loop an ordered playlist, but the cited documentation does not describe a built-in feature that writes the currently playing filename or title into an OBS Text source or Browser overlay. Treat the metadata handoff as a separate component. A scheduling system that updates a text file or serves a page is one possible design, but the integration needs to be configured and tested for your setup.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Check YouTube access and plan for long streams
- Enable live streaming in advance. YouTube says first-time live-stream enablement may take up to 24 hours (encoder setup help).
- Check channel eligibility and current limits. YouTube’s live-streaming help says a channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. It currently lists limits of 10 active streams per channel and three per stream key. These operational limits can change, so check the current help page before scheduling a stream (Get started with live streaming).
- Plan archives separately for a continuous broadcast. YouTube states that streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not guarantee an archive for a single uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast; plan how you will retain or publish episodes and recordings rather than relying on that rule for a stream longer than 12 hours (encoder setup help).
- Set the audience designation accurately. YouTube’s Live Streaming API reference includes a made-for-kids status field. Apply the correct audience setting in YouTube Studio or through the relevant API workflow. That reference alone does not establish which chat, discovery, or monetization features will be available for a particular stream; consult YouTube’s current audience-specific guidance for those details (YouTube Live Streaming API reference).
- Use content you have the right to stream. A label identifies an episode; it does not establish permission to broadcast it. Confirm the rights for the video, music, and other included material before running the stream.
Or let it run in the cloud
For a YouTube stream made from uploaded episodes, StreamNeo offers a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos; it does not stream from a camera. The StreamNeo information describes looping and playlists, but does not establish a now-playing label or an automatic way to connect episode metadata to one. If an on-screen episode title is essential, confirm how you will supply and update that label before choosing a workflow.
Nothing has to stay on at home. Every slot streams uploaded video at its original quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers; it includes automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo, or start the free first day.
