To run an ambient channel from OBS, copy your YouTube stream key from YouTube Studio, enter it in OBS under Settings → Stream, and build a scene with a looping video and audio source. The key is a private credential that connects OBS to YouTube—not a public channel identifier. Before relying on a long session, test the feed, confirm you have rights to every audio and video element, and plan around YouTube’s stated archive behavior for streams under 12 hours.
Before you connect OBS to YouTube
Check that your channel can livestream before setting up the encoder. YouTube Help says a channel must be verified and must not have had a livestream restriction in the previous 90 days. First-time livestream activation may take up to 24 hours, so do not leave this until the moment you want to launch. YouTube’s livestream eligibility guidance has the current requirements.
- Confirm you can access the channel’s YouTube Studio and Live Control Room.
- Allow time for first-time activation and check that Studio permits you to create a stream.
- Prepare video and audio that you have the necessary rights to livestream and, if you want a replay, archive.
- Use a stable upload connection and leave time to test the complete path from OBS to YouTube.
Get the YouTube stream URL and key
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live.
- Choose the Stream tab for a continuing stream, or create/select a scheduled stream in the Live Control Room.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that stream. YouTube describes the key as the password/address that tells an encoder where to send the feed and lets YouTube accept it. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions explain the Live Control Room workflow.
- Keep the key private. Do not display it in a scene, recording, screenshot, or public tutorial, and do not share it with anyone who should not be able to send a feed to your channel.
If the key is exposed, a channel owner or manager can reset it in the Live Control Room. Replace the old value in OBS with the new key before going live again. YouTube’s stream-key guidance covers managing the credential.
Connect OBS to YouTube
- Open OBS and go to Settings → Stream.
- If YouTube is available in the service list, select it and follow the connection workflow, then provide the stream key if prompted.
- If you need a manual connection, select a custom service, paste the stream URL from YouTube into the server field, and paste the stream key into the stream-key field.
- Apply the settings and return to the main OBS window. OBS’s guidance recommends leaving defaults alone unless you have a known reason to change them; choose output settings to fit your source, upload capacity, and intended stream quality rather than treating one bitrate or resolution as universal. The key belongs in OBS’s stream configuration, not in a text overlay or a public-facing description. Anyone with access to it may be able to send a feed using your channel’s stream setup.

Make the ambient scene loop
Build the scene from sources in OBS, then inspect the preview and audio meters before you connect to viewers. For a single repeating visual, use a Media Source. For a rotating set of files, use OBS’s VLC Video source and its playlist loop option; VLC must be installed for that source to be available. OBS documents both approaches in its Media Sources guide.
One file: Media Source
- In the OBS Sources panel, select + and add a Media Source.
- Select the local ambient video file and enable its Loop option.
- Add or configure the audio source that belongs with the scene. Check that the sound is present and not clipping on the OBS audio meters.
- Use the preview to verify framing, cropping, and any overlays. Keep the stream key and other private credentials out of the visible scene.
Several files: VLC Video playlist
- Install VLC if it is not already available; OBS requires it for the VLC Video source.
- Add a VLC Video source and add the files you want to rotate through.
- Enable Loop Playlist, then check that files advance and the playlist returns to the beginning as intended.
- Watch the scene preview and audio meters through a full transition between files. Check that there is no unintended gap, silent segment, or abrupt volume change.

Choose output settings for your source and connection
There is no single bitrate, resolution, or frame-rate preset established for every ambient channel in the available OBS and YouTube guidance. Match the output to the media you are playing, the quality you intend to deliver, and the sustained upload capacity available to the computer running OBS. Avoid changing encoder defaults without a specific reason; test any changes before using them in a long-running session. OBS explains its setup approach in the streaming guide.
In particular, check that the selected output does not exceed the source’s useful resolution or the connection’s reliable capacity. A locally smooth preview does not prove that YouTube is receiving a clean feed, so verify the YouTube preview as part of your test.

Test the stream, then start it deliberately
- Run a short test before planning a continuous session. OBS strongly encourages testing, and YouTube recommends preparing the encoder event in advance; its guidance says to start the encoder at least 15 minutes before an event so there is time to check the feed. OBS’s streaming guide and YouTube’s live encoder guidance describe testing and setup.
- Start streaming in OBS and wait for the feed to appear in the YouTube Live Control Room preview.
- Check picture, framing, audio level, and playback transitions. Confirm that the intended stream or scheduled event is selected.
- When the preview is right, start the event in the Live Control Room if that workflow requires it. Check the watch page from a channel or watch-page link and on a mobile device.
- Monitor the stream after it starts, especially audio and video. Do not assume that an OBS status indicator alone confirms that the public watch page is working as intended.
For a scheduled event, YouTube’s encoder guidance advises setting up at least two hours ahead. Treat this as setup advice for scheduled events, not a guarantee that any channel or connection will be ready by a particular time. YouTube Help provides the current event workflow.
Plan for archives and long sessions
YouTube’s encoder help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. It does not establish that a continuous stream longer than 12 hours will be archived as one complete replay. If replay access matters, check the current Live Control Room behavior and consider ending and restarting sessions within the documented archive window rather than relying on a single extra-long session. Do not treat the live feed itself as a guaranteed complete recording. YouTube’s encoder help describes the archive condition.

To end a session, follow the selected YouTube workflow: end the stream or event in the Live Control Room and stop the encoder in OBS as directed. Check Studio afterward if you need to confirm whether an archive was created.

YouTube scans live streams for third-party matches. A track can still be interrupted even if you have a license when the rights holder has not allowlisted your channel. Before using ambient music, confirm that the license expressly covers livestreaming and any archive or replay you intend to keep; retain the license terms or permission and ask the rights holder about allowlisting where relevant. A label such as “royalty-free” or “licensed” by itself does not establish that a track is cleared for every use or will stream without interruption. Troubleshoot common problems
- YouTube does not accept the feed: Check that OBS uses the stream URL and key for the correct stream, that the key has not been reset, and that the channel is eligible and activated for livestreaming. Recopy the current values from the Live Control Room if needed.
- The Live Control Room preview is missing: Confirm OBS is actually streaming, check the server and key fields, and allow a moment for the feed to arrive. Verify the selected stream in Studio before starting the event.
- The picture or sound is wrong: Inspect the OBS scene preview, source selection, framing, and audio meters. Check playback through a transition or loop point, not only at the opening frame.
- A playlist does not repeat: Verify that the source is VLC Video, VLC is installed, the intended files are in the playlist, and Loop Playlist is enabled.
- The live feed is interrupted for a rights match: Review the matched material and your actual license scope. Contact the rights holder about channel allowlisting if applicable; possessing a license does not by itself prevent automated interruption.
- The replay is incomplete or absent after a very long broadcast: YouTube’s stated automatic-archive guidance covers streams under 12 hours. Check the current Studio archive status and do not rely on a longer continuous session as a complete replay.
