There is no single monthly rupee figure: the cost depends on the PC’s average power draw at the wall and your household’s local electricity tariff. As a clear calculation, a PC drawing a steady 50 W uses about 36 kWh in a 30-day month; at 100 W, it uses about 72 kWh. Those are hypothetical examples, not measurements of a typical streaming PC.
To estimate your own added cost, measure the equipment’s average wall draw, calculate its monthly kWh, then apply the marginal energy rate on your household bill. Include the monitor and other devices if you want their electricity counted too.
Calculate monthly electricity use
Use this formula for a 30-day month:
Monthly kWh = average wall watts ÷ 1,000 × 24 × 30
For example, 50 W is 0.05 kW, so 0.05 × 720 hours equals 36 kWh. At 100 W, the same calculation gives 72 kWh. Every 30 W of continuous average draw adds 0.72 kWh per day, or 21.6 kWh in a 30-day month.

This assumes the device draws the same power all the time. Actual consumption can change with the PC’s hardware, playback resolution, browser or app, GPU acceleration, background activity, peripherals, and whether the display remains on.
Estimate the rupee cost from your household tariff
Multiply the additional kWh by the applicable marginal energy charge on your electricity bill. India does not have one household rate that applies to every state and tariff category. The Ministry of Power says, “Electricity tariffs in India are determined by the Appropriate Electricity Regulatory Commissions under the Electricity Act, 2003.” See the Ministry of Power for this explanation.

As one location-specific example, Lakshadweep’s Department of Electricity lists these normal domestic energy charges for FY 2026–27. They illustrate how a calculation can vary by slab; they are not a national tariff.

At those rates, 36 kWh would add roughly ₹128–₹470 in energy charges, and 72 kWh roughly ₹256–₹940, depending on the slab applied. The range reflects the listed energy rates, not a personalized bill calculation. The schedule also lists a fixed charge of ₹25/kW/month. Your actual bill can differ because of your state and DISCOM tariff, household’s total consumption, subsidies, duties, fixed charges, and other adjustments. Check the Lakshadweep Department of Electricity tariff page and your own bill for applicable terms.

If the PC’s extra use moves the household into a higher consumption slab, different portions of that added electricity may be charged at different marginal rates. Fixed charges do not necessarily rise in direct proportion to added kWh.
Measure the PC instead of guessing its wattage
Take a wall-side reading during representative playback
The most useful input is the PC’s average AC draw while it is doing the job you want to estimate. A plug-in electricity usage monitor or watt meter can provide a wall-side reading; choose one rated for your local outlet and the connected load. If it records accumulated kWh, leave it connected for a representative stream period and divide the recorded energy by the number of hours to estimate average draw.

Measure the monitor and any other equipment separately or together if you want them included in the total. ENERGY STAR’s computer measurement guidance treats off, sleep, and idle as distinct operating states and describes testing from an AC source, so a component’s label or a reading in a different state is not a substitute for playback measurement. Do not use the power supply rating as the average draw
A PC power supply’s wattage rating describes its capacity, not what the computer continuously draws from the wall. Older ENERGY STAR materials give context, but not a current-PC estimate: a circa-2008 stakeholder annex showed one desktop averaging about 57 W at idle, and a 2006-era Category A desktop specification set a 50 W idle limit. Neither figure establishes the draw of your PC during a children’s stream.

Turn the estimate into your own bill figure
- Find the average wall watts for the PC during representative playback. Add the monitor and peripherals if they are part of the estimate.
- Calculate monthly use: watts ÷ 1,000 × 24 × 30.
- Use your bill to identify the DISCOM, domestic tariff category, applicable slab, subsidy, and energy rate.
- Apply the appropriate marginal energy charge to the added kWh, accounting for any slab boundary the added use crosses.
For a fair comparison between two PCs or setups, measure both under the same playback conditions and use the same tariff assumptions. Keep the included equipment consistent as well.
