To restart a 24/7 kids’ YouTube stream after a power cut, you need recovery at each link in the chain: backup power for the streaming computer and network equipment, automatic startup for the encoder, and YouTube Live settings that let the encoder start the stream. A UPS or inverter can cover local power loss, but it cannot keep your internet service running through an ISP or upstream network outage.
What has to recover after a power cut?
A continuous stream depends on more than the computer. The full path is the streaming PC or hardware encoder, modem, router, any required network switch, the encoder software and its saved stream key, and YouTube’s live-stream settings. If any required device stays off—or the internet is still unavailable—the stream cannot resume.
Separate three failure cases when planning: a local power cut, an internet connection failure, and an encoder or computer restart. A UPS addresses local power for the equipment connected to it. Encoder startup addresses the software process after a reboot. A separately routed backup internet connection is needed to address an ISP or access-network failure.
Set up YouTube Live for encoder-started streaming
- Create or reuse the scheduled stream. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, prepare the live stream you intend to use. YouTube’s encoder workflow supports streaming software and standalone hardware encoders; see Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Enable Auto-start deliberately. In the stream settings, turn on Auto-start if you want the encoder to be able to start the YouTube stream. YouTube says, “When these settings are on, you can start or stop streaming from your encoder.” See Manage live stream settings.
- Decide what Auto-stop should do. Do not assume it is the same as encoder recovery. Choose the setting with your continuous-stream plan in mind, and make sure no intended scheduled end or operator action will stop the broadcast.
- Save the server URL and stream key in the encoder. YouTube provides a Live server URL and stream key for the encoder. Store them in the encoder configuration securely. Treat the key like a password: keep it out of screenshots, logs and public scripts.
First-time live streaming enablement may take up to 24 hours according to YouTube. That is an initial setup consideration, not a stated recovery delay after a power cut. YouTube also says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; that archive guidance does not guarantee uninterrupted streaming or full archiving for longer broadcasts.

Protect the computer and internet equipment with backup power
List every device that must stay powered for the stream to resume: the PC or encoder, modem, router, and any required switch or other power supply. A UPS connected only to the PC leaves the network path exposed if the modem or router loses power.
Choose a UPS or inverter based on the measured combined load and the length of outage you want to bridge. There is no defensible universal runtime or capacity for this setup: actual runtime depends on the equipment load and the backup system. Test your own installation under its real load rather than relying on a generic runtime claim. A home inverter and battery system is a broader option when the desired local backup period exceeds what a small UPS can provide.

Backup power only covers devices and circuits it actually supplies. It does not guarantee that an ISP’s service, exchange, or upstream network remains available. Configure the encoder to launch after Windows boots
For OBS on Windows, arrange for OBS to open automatically at startup and configure an appropriate automatic attempt to start streaming. An OBS Project Forums response suggests adding --startstreaming to an OBS shortcut and launching it through the Startup folder or Task Scheduler. The key edge case is boot order. The PC and OBS may be ready before the modem and router have reconnected to the ISP. OBS’s automatic reconnect behavior does not necessarily solve an initial failed connection after a cold reboot. A delayed launch, scheduled retry, or connectivity-aware script may help, but validate the exact configuration on your own Windows, OBS, router and YouTube setup. Do not treat a successful software launch as proof that YouTube is receiving the stream.
Test power recovery and internet recovery separately
- Prepare a controlled test. Tell anyone relying on the channel that you are testing, and avoid disrupting a scheduled broadcast. Confirm you can access the encoder, YouTube Live Control Room and public watch page.
- Test local power restoration. Remove local power in a controlled way, then restore it. Confirm the backed-up equipment behaves as expected, the PC or encoder boots, and OBS or the hardware encoder starts.
- Wait for the network path. Verify that the router and modem have reconnected and the ISP link is usable before judging the encoder’s start attempt.
- Check YouTube’s side. Inspect the Live Control Room preview and stream health, then verify the public watch page. A running OBS window alone does not establish that the stream is live.
- Test an internet interruption separately. Simulate a network loss without powering off the PC, then restore the connection. This distinguishes encoder reconnect behavior from cold-boot automation.
Plan for an ISP outage as a separate risk
If the stream must continue when the primary access connection fails, investigate a separately routed backup internet connection and verify that the encoder can use it. A second connection is a separate resilience choice from UPS sizing; the evidence available here does not establish a particular India provider or service plan. A backup link that shares the same vulnerable route may not protect against the failure you are trying to cover.

Troubleshooting: why the stream did not restart
- The PC is on but the stream is offline: Check whether OBS or the encoder actually launched, whether the start-streaming option ran, and whether YouTube received a signal in Live Control Room.
- The first start attempt fails after reboot: The network equipment may not have finished connecting when the encoder tried to start. Test a delayed or retrying startup and confirm it waits for usable internet.
- The encoder is running but has no connection: Check modem and router power, their connection status, and the ISP service. A UPS cannot fix an ISP-side outage.
- The stream key or server URL is rejected: Check the encoder’s saved YouTube server URL and stream key against the intended stream. If the key may have been exposed, replace it in YouTube and update the encoder securely.
- The computer or network gear shuts down during an outage: Confirm every necessary device is connected to backup power and that the backup is sized for the measured load and intended duration.
- The stream starts but later stops: Review YouTube Auto-stop and any scheduled end or encoder-side stop behavior. Confirm the stream health and public watch page rather than relying only on the encoder status.
