When FFmpeg exits, a separate process supervisor must start it again. FFmpeg’s fifo muxer can retry some output failures while FFmpeg is still running, but it cannot relaunch a process that has terminated. Use supervision for process exits, consider FIFO recovery for transient output failures, then verify the restarted feed in YouTube Live Control Room. Neither approach guarantees gapless playback or that YouTube will preserve the same live event.
First identify what failed
“Reconnect” can mean two different things. Check whether the FFmpeg process is still running:
- FFmpeg exited: configure an external supervisor, such as a Linux service manager, to launch a new FFmpeg process.
- FFmpeg is running, but its network output failed: consider FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer recovery options if they fit the command and failure mode.
- YouTube receives the stream, but delivery or quality is poor: investigate the source, encoder, CPU, credentials, and outbound connection. A restart policy alone will not fix these problems.
These are separate recovery layers. FFmpeg’s documentation describes FIFO as a way to attempt recovery of an output; it does not make an exited FFmpeg process restart itself. FFmpeg fifo muxer documentation.
Restart FFmpeg with a process supervisor
Use a service manager on Linux
Run the complete FFmpeg command under a service manager or another external supervisor. Configure an appropriate restart policy and delay, keep logs, and decide how intentional shutdowns should behave. The exact service unit depends on your host, command, user, file paths, and operational requirements; the example below is a policy illustration, not a complete unit to paste unchanged.

Restart=always
RestartSec=5A user-posted FFmpeg-user example from January 2025 uses these values. It is anecdotal, not an official systemd recommendation or a tested configuration for every YouTube stream. The five-second delay is an example, not a guaranteed recovery time or universally suitable setting. FFmpeg-user service example.
Make each restart observable
- Have the supervisor launch the same intended FFmpeg command with the correct input, output URL, and stream key.
- Enable service and FFmpeg logging so you can distinguish a process exit from a new process that starts but fails to connect or read its input.
- Check the supervisor’s service status after an exit and inspect the new FFmpeg log output.
- Confirm in YouTube Live Control Room that YouTube is receiving the restarted feed; a service reporting “running” does not establish that YouTube accepted it.
- Test deliberate failure and recovery before relying on the setup for a scheduled broadcast.
Do not assume that restarting FFmpeg preserves the same watch event, reconnects within a particular time, or resumes without a gap. The behavior can depend on the host, FFmpeg build, stream configuration, and YouTube’s handling of the new connection.

Use FIFO recovery for a different failure mode
FFmpeg’s fifo pseudo-muxer can attempt to recover a failed output while the process is still alive. In the official documentation, attempt_recovery defaults to false, recovery_wait_time to five seconds, max_recovery_attempts to unlimited, recover_any_error to false, and queue_size to 60 packets. These are documented defaults, not recommended values for every stream. FFmpeg fifo muxer documentation.
The manual includes an RTMP example using -f fifo, -fifo_format flv, -attempt_recovery 1, and a one-second retry interval. That one-second interval belongs to the documented example; it is not a universal retry recommendation. Adapt the muxer and stream mapping to your actual audio/video command, then test the result.

Understand the queue tradeoff
- When the FIFO queue fills, the default behavior blocks the encoder.
- With
drop_pkts_on_overflowenabled, encoding can continue, but packets—and therefore stream content—may be omitted. restart_with_keyframedefaults to false in the documentation; changing it is not a substitute for testing the resulting stream.
FIFO output recovery and process supervision are not interchangeable: FIFO cannot start a new process after FFmpeg exits, and a supervisor does not by itself handle every transient output failure.
Choose recovery by symptom

Verify the YouTube connection and stream health
Check the stream URL and key
The stream URL and key tell the encoder where and how to send its feed. If the key was reset, update the FFmpeg configuration before restarting. YouTube explains how to manage stream settings and update encoder software after a key change. Manage live stream settings.

Preview, monitor, and test failover
YouTube recommends testing and previewing a stream and monitoring its health and messages. Its failover test is specifically for a primary and backup encoder: stop the primary encoder or disconnect its Ethernet, then check whether the player rolls over to the backup. That test does not demonstrate that a single restarted FFmpeg process will produce uninterrupted playback. YouTube live streaming tips and YouTube encoder settings.

- The service restarts, but YouTube shows no incoming stream: inspect the latest FFmpeg log and confirm the output URL and current stream key.
- FFmpeg exits again immediately: use the service status and logs to identify whether the command, input, or host is failing; repeated restarts do not repair the underlying fault.
- FFmpeg remains running but output is unhealthy: investigate the output failure and whether FIFO recovery is appropriate; check whether queue behavior is blocking or dropping packets.
- The stream starts but has quality or delivery problems: follow YouTube’s checks for encoder errors, CPU load, a local archive, and outbound internet connection. Troubleshoot your live stream.
- You expect a backup encoder to take over: configure that failover separately and verify the player rolls over as YouTube recommends. A process restart on the primary host is not a backup-encoder test.
