If OBS cannot open a video file, first check that it is added as a local Media Source and that the source points to the right file. Then check the file’s actual container and audio/video codecs—not just its filename extension. If the combination is unsupported, use OBS’s VLC Video source where appropriate or re-encode the file to a documented compatible format. Fix playback in the scene before troubleshooting YouTube ingest or stream settings.
1. Check the Media Source and file path
- In OBS, select the scene where you want the video.
- In the Sources dock, click + and choose Media Source. OBS documents Media Source as the source type for adding audio and video files to a scene: OBS Sources Guide.
- In the source properties, enable Local File and browse to the intended video. If the source already exists, open its properties and confirm the selected path; a moved or renamed file can leave the source pointing to a location that no longer exists.
- Click OK, then check whether the video appears and plays in the preview. If the source is hidden, layered behind another source, or outside the visible canvas, correct that scene issue before concluding that OBS cannot decode the file.
OBS’s Media Sources guide lists video extensions including .mp4, .ts, .mov, .flv, .mkv, .avi, .gif, and .webm; listed audio extensions include .mp3, .aac, .ogg, and .wav. The extension list is not a guarantee that every file with one of those suffixes will play: a container can hold different codecs. See the OBS Media Sources guide.
2. Identify the file’s actual container and codecs
A filename such as video.mp4 tells you the container label, not necessarily whether the video and audio streams inside it are compatible with your OBS setup. Inspect the media’s actual video codec, audio codec, and container, then compare the combination with the OBS Audio/Video Formats Guide. Its format matrix documents combinations such as H.264 in MP4, MOV, MKV, M3U8/HLS, and TS; HEVC in those same listed containers; AV1 in MP4 and MKV; and ProRes in MOV and MKV. These are documented matrix entries, not a guarantee that every file, operating-system build, decoder, or hardware setup will behave identically.
The guide also says MKV supports every audio/video encoder combination supported in OBS Studio and is the default recording container. That statement concerns OBS’s documented format support; it does not mean renaming another file to .mkv will convert it.

3. Try VLC Video when native playback does not work
- Install VLC if it is not already installed, matching its architecture to OBS.
- In the Sources dock, click + and choose VLC Video.
- Add the file to the source’s playlist, then test playback in the OBS preview.
OBS says VLC Video uses VLC libraries for extended media support, but it is an alternate playback route, not a guarantee that every file will work. OBS’s prerequisite is explicit: “If you are using 64-bit OBS, you must install 64-bit VLC.” Check the OBS Media Sources page for the documented source details.
4. Re-encode only if the file’s format combination is the problem
If the file’s codecs and container do not form a combination supported by the OBS guide—or native playback and VLC Video both fail—make a converted copy using an output combination shown in OBS’s compatibility matrix. Inspect both the video and audio streams when choosing the output; converting only the video may leave an incompatible audio stream in place. The format guide documents H.264 and several supported containers, but select based on the file and your system rather than assuming one setting fixes every playback failure.

Do not simply change the filename suffix. Renaming .avi to .mp4, for example, changes the label, not the media’s container or codecs. Re-encoding changes the media itself; keep the original until you have verified the converted copy in OBS.
5. Test the complete scene before going live
- Play the file from the beginning and seek or loop it if those behaviors matter to the scene.
- Check that both picture and audio are present in the preview and that the audio meter responds.
- Confirm the source is visible, in the right scene, and not covered by another source.
- Run a short test of the complete scene before starting the YouTube broadcast.
A local file that will not play in OBS is a source or media-compatibility problem; a stream key, YouTube ingest, or network issue is a separate problem. Resolve local playback first, then investigate the broadcast only if the scene works but YouTube does not receive it.

Troubleshooting common symptoms
