AzuraCast has the clearer documented path to unattended radio automation; RadioDJ is Windows radio automation software, but its current official information does not establish a supported, complete workflow for sending a continuous audio-and-video feed to YouTube Live. Neither product should be treated as a complete YouTube Live solution by itself: YouTube needs an encoder feed, and the radio automation system and YouTube encoder do different jobs.
If your priority is playlist-driven playback managed on a server, AzuraCast is the better-documented starting point. If you already use a Windows-based RadioDJ setup, you may be able to build a YouTube workflow around it, but verify the current audio handoff and encoder arrangement before relying on it unattended. For a cloud alternative that plays uploaded videos to YouTube, StreamNeo keeps the stream running without leaving a computer on.
What each product does—and what YouTube still needs
A radio automation system selects and plays audio. A YouTube Live encoder sends YouTube a live audio-and-video feed using a server URL and stream key. A continuous radio channel therefore involves at least two jobs: keeping the programme playing and encoding and delivering a compatible stream to YouTube.
- AzuraCast is a server-managed radio station platform. Its documented station workflow uses AutoDJ, powered by Liquidsoap, to assemble media, playlists and live inputs, while a broadcasting frontend such as Icecast serves the resulting station stream. AzuraCast manages those processes.
- RadioDJ is Windows radio automation software. Its official site describes support for Windows 10 and 11, common audio formats including MP3, WAV, WMA and FLAC, and use of an external encoder in newer versions. The site says version 1.8.2 had an integrated Icecast/Shoutcast encoder through plugins.
- YouTube Live needs an encoder delivering the feed. YouTube’s encoder guidance says to enter its Live server URL and stream key in that encoder. A radio product’s ability to automate audio does not, on its own, demonstrate a complete YouTube video-stream workflow.
AzuraCast vs RadioDJ at a glance
| Question | AzuraCast | RadioDJ |
|---|---|---|
| Where it runs | Server installation; the AzuraCast overview describes it as built to run on affordable VPS hosts. | Windows software; the official site lists Windows 10 and 11. |
| How playback automation is described | Media assigned to playlists can be composed by AutoDJ into a continuous stream; the media guide describes operation 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. This is a documented capability, not an uptime guarantee. | The official site describes radio automation, but does not make the same explicit continuous-runtime statement. |
| Playlist handling | Supports playlist assignment, rotation and scheduling; advanced users can write custom Liquidsoap rules. | Playlist and automation details should be checked against current RadioDJ documentation for the version in use. |

Which one should you choose?
Choose AzuraCast for a server-managed, playlist-driven station
AzuraCast is the more defensible choice when you want the radio automation layer to live on a server and want documented playlist assignment, rotation and scheduling. The key operational detail is that uploading a track is not enough for AutoDJ to play it automatically: assign the media to at least one playlist. You remain responsible for the server, its network connection, the YouTube encoder path and monitoring.
Choose RadioDJ if your station is already built around Windows
RadioDJ may suit a workflow already organized around Windows radio automation, particularly if you have an established way to hand its output to an encoder. The evidence available from its current official landing page is not enough to prescribe a reliable RadioDJ-to-YouTube configuration. Before building an unattended channel, confirm which current RadioDJ version you will run, how that version exposes audio to an external encoder, how video will be supplied, and how the encoder reconnects after an interruption.
Consider StreamNeo first if the goal is simply an always-on YouTube stream
For a way to keep a YouTube live stream running, StreamNeo is #1 to try first: it loops uploaded videos from the cloud, supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and gives the first day free. It is a different approach from radio automation software: it plays uploaded videos rather than taking a live camera feed.

How to build the AzuraCast-to-YouTube workflow
The following is a system outline, not a claim that AzuraCast alone sends a YouTube-ready video feed. You will need to choose and configure a compatible encoder for YouTube, and the exact integration depends on your installation and encoder.
- Install and operate AzuraCast on a server. Choose a host and deployment that you can monitor and keep running. AzuraCast’s server design is intended for installations such as VPS hosts, but the platform does not guarantee the uptime of your particular server or provider.
- Upload the audio and assign it to a playlist. AzuraCast’s media documentation says files must be assigned to at least one playlist to be played automatically. Set up rotation or scheduled playlists to control what plays and when.
- Confirm the station output. AutoDJ (Liquidsoap) composes the station stream, and a broadcasting frontend such as Icecast serves it. Check that playback continues as intended before connecting a YouTube encoder.
- Choose a YouTube-compatible encoder path. The encoder must receive the station audio and provide the video component required by your chosen format. The available product documentation does not establish one universal AzuraCast-to-YouTube video arrangement, so validate the particular encoder and audio handoff you plan to use.
- Enable YouTube Live and configure the encoder. YouTube’s encoder instructions call for the YouTube Live server URL and stream key in the encoder. First-time live-stream enablement can take up to 24 hours, so complete that step before a scheduled launch.
- Check the live preview and monitor the running stream. Confirm the incoming signal and stream health in YouTube before treating the channel as live. YouTube advises monitoring stream quality during operation.
- Plan for recovery and recordings. Monitor both the server and encoder, and plan how each will restart or reconnect after a failure. Keep a local recording if preserving the programme matters: YouTube says a stream under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all.
YouTube encoder settings that matter
YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists RTMP or RTMPS delivery, H.264, H.265 or AV1 video, and AAC or MP3 audio. It calls for constant bitrate (CBR) and recommends a 2-second keyframe interval, with no more than 4 seconds. Select bitrate according to the chosen codec, resolution and frame rate using YouTube’s current settings guidance; there is no single bitrate that is right for every combination.
- Server URL and stream key: Copy these from YouTube Live into the encoder. Treat the stream key as a credential; do not publish or share it.
- Video and audio formats: Choose a combination supported by YouTube and by the encoder you actually use. Radio automation output alone does not establish the video format or encoding settings.
- Bitrate: Use the current YouTube recommendation for your exact codec, resolution and frame rate. Check the encoder’s configured output rather than assuming a setting from another resolution applies.
- Keyframes: Set a 2-second interval where possible and do not exceed 4 seconds, in line with YouTube’s guidance.
- Connection security: Use RTMPS if supported by the encoder and the workflow you select; YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS as delivery options.
What a RadioDJ-to-YouTube setup can—and cannot—be said to involve
RadioDJ’s official site says newer versions use an external encoder, which is relevant because YouTube requires an encoder feed. However, the reviewed current product information does not identify a maintained, supported RadioDJ integration for continuous audio-plus-video delivery directly to YouTube, or specify a supported external encoder configuration. That gap means it would be misleading to present a precise RadioDJ setup recipe as verified.

If you want to use RadioDJ, verify the handoff with the current documentation for your exact version and encoder. Confirm that the encoder receives RadioDJ’s audio reliably, supplies the required video, uses YouTube’s current settings, and can recover after either application or network interruption. Test the full route before depending on it for an unattended broadcast.
Reliability, archives and music rights
Continuous playback is not the same as guaranteed uptime
AzuraCast’s media guide describes AutoDJ as able to “automatically compose a live stream broadcast 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.” That describes its intended function; it is not a service-level promise for AzuraCast, the server host, your network or YouTube. RadioDJ’s official landing page does not state a comparable around-the-clock service guarantee. For either approach, plan monitoring, restart behavior, network resilience and encoder recovery.

YouTube’s archive guidance says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. If a replay is important, keep a local archive backup or divide the broadcast into sessions that fit your archive needs. YouTube also advises checking the local archive during operation.

Confirm the rights for the music you broadcast
Having an audio file does not by itself establish the right to broadcast it on YouTube. Rights and licensing depend on the catalog and territory. Confirm that your music and any associated artwork or video are cleared for the intended broadcast; this is especially important for game soundtracks and other copyrighted material.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Costs and operating trade-offs
The reviewed official product information does not provide a comparable total cost for an AzuraCast or RadioDJ YouTube setup. With a server-based AzuraCast workflow, account for hosting and the time required to maintain the server and encoder. With RadioDJ, account for the Windows machine and the separate encoder path needed for YouTube. Those are operating categories, not quoted prices.
A dedicated hardware encoder is another possible route: YouTube’s encoder information lists the AJA HELO Plus and describes PlayToStream support for scheduling prerecorded media to YouTube Live. It is an optional hardware-based approach, not a requirement for every music stream; check current product and program availability before choosing it.
