Use MKVToolNix to inspect the MKV’s track IDs, select only the audio tracks you want to keep, and remux the file to a new MKV. Removing tracks does not convert the file to YouTube’s recommended upload format: for a regular upload, check the container and codecs separately; for a live broadcast, configure the live encoder rather than relying on upload settings.
Before you remove an audio track
First decide which audio program your audience needs: for example, a particular language, game audio without commentary, or a commentary mix. MKV files can contain multiple audio streams, and the track ID used by MKVToolNix is not necessarily the number shown in a media player. Identify the tracks in this specific file before selecting any.
Make a working copy of the source file. When identifying tracks, note which audio stream to retain and whether the file also contains subtitles, chapters, attachments, or other streams you need. MKVToolNix’s mkvmerge manual documents track identification and selection; consult the manual bundled with your installed version if its options differ.
Inspect the MKV’s tracks
With MKVToolNix GUI
- Open MKVToolNix GUI and add the source MKV.
- Review the listed tracks. Use the track details, such as language and codec where available, along with playback, to determine which audio stream is the one you want.
- Note the other streams you want to preserve, including subtitles and chapters. Do not assume every non-audio item will be handled as you intend without checking the output.
With the command line
Run mkvmerge --identify input.mkv to list the file’s tracks. For machine-readable identification, use mkvmerge -J input.mkv. Match the IDs in this output to the audio streams you want to keep; do not substitute a media player’s displayed track numbering.

Remove unwanted audio tracks by remuxing
MKVToolNix GUI
- Add the source MKV as an input.
- Uncheck the audio tracks you do not want in the output. Leave the desired audio track checked, and deliberately retain any needed subtitles, chapters, attachments, or other tracks.
- Choose a different output filename so the source remains intact.
- Start multiplexing. MKVToolNix creates a new file containing the selected streams; this operation is a remux, not an audio or video re-encode.
mkvmerge command line
To keep audio tracks with IDs 1 and 3, for example, use:
mkvmerge -o output.mkv --audio-tracks 1,3 input.mkv

Replace 1,3 with the IDs reported for your file, and replace the filenames with your actual paths. The track-selection option applies to the input file that follows it, so put the options before that input filename. Audio tracks are copied by default; specifying the IDs selects which audio tracks to include. The manual also documents an inverse selection form for excluding listed IDs. Check the syntax against the manual for your installed MKVToolNix version.
Verify the new file
- Reopen the output in MKVToolNix GUI or run
mkvmerge --identify output.mkv. Confirm that only the intended audio tracks remain and that needed non-audio tracks are still present. - Play the beginning and a later section. Confirm the retained track is the right language or mix and remains synchronized with the video.
- Keep the original MKV if you may need its removed audio streams or other source material later.
Choose the right YouTube workflow: upload or live
For a normal video upload
Removing extra audio tracks can simplify a file or prevent an unwanted program from being included, but it does not guarantee YouTube will accept the file and does not turn MKV into MP4. YouTube’s recommended upload settings list MP4 and recommend AAC-LC, Opus, or Eclipsa Audio. The page recommends 48 kHz audio and lists 128 kbps for mono, 384 kbps for stereo, and 512 kbps for 5.1 audio. Those are upload recommendations, not track-selection requirements or general live-stream settings.

If the retained streams and codecs are suitable but you need a different container, remuxing may be sufficient. If the container or codecs need conversion, use an export or transcoding workflow that supports the required output; track selection alone does not re-encode media. OBS notes that MKV is resilient if a recording is interrupted, while it may need remuxing for editing software. Its recording formats guide also describes fragmented MP4/MOV as options suited to uploads to platforms such as YouTube. Keep the local recording choice separate from the format you prepare for delivery.
For a live broadcast
Removing tracks from a saved MKV does not configure the audio sent by a live encoder. Set up the audio actually being ingested by YouTube. Its live encoder guidance lists AAC or MP3 audio for RTMP/RTMPS; 5.1 surround over those protocols is supported only with AAC. Do not apply the upload page’s sample-rate and bitrate figures as generic live requirements.

Common problems and fixes
- The wrong language or mix was kept: identify tracks again and confirm by listening. Track IDs are file-specific; do not assume the same ID means the same language in another MKV.
- An audio track is still present: inspect the output’s tracks. In the GUI, confirm the unwanted track was unchecked; in the CLI, check the IDs in
--audio-tracksand verify the option appears before its input filename. - Subtitles or chapters went missing: review the output’s non-audio tracks and adjust the selection before remuxing again. Preserve the source so you can recover anything omitted.
- The MKV is still not in the format you want to upload: track removal only selects streams. Convert or export to an appropriate container and codec if needed, using YouTube’s upload recommendations as the target.
- Audio is out of sync or sounds wrong: compare the start and a later section with the source. Re-identify the audio streams and select the correct one; if the problem is already in the retained stream, removing other tracks will not repair it.
