Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallIf OBS shows a black image while playing a video file, first check how you added it: use Media Source to play a file in an OBS scene, or VLC Video as an alternate playback source. Use Window Capture only when you specifically need to capture a separate player window. Then check the source and file, test Media Source with hardware decoding off, and compare playback through VLC Video. A black screen has no single proven fix; the right next step depends on the source type, file encoding, operating system, and OBS version.
First identify how OBS is supposed to show the video
OBS has different sources for playing a video file and capturing another application. Choosing the wrong one can look like a video-decoding problem even when the file itself is not the issue.
- Media Source: Use this to add a local video file directly to an OBS scene.
- VLC Video: Use this as an alternative file-playback source. It relies on VLC libraries and requires VLC to be installed.
- Window Capture: Use this to capture a separate application window, such as a desktop media player. It is not the normal way to play a file directly in an OBS scene.
If your goal is simply to show the file in OBS, add it as a Media Source rather than capturing VLC’s window. An OBS forum reply made this distinction in a Windows 8.1, OBS 25.0.8, and VLC 3.0.11 case; treat it as guidance about choosing the right source, not proof that the same setting fixes every current setup.
Check the source and file before changing decoding settings
- Open the scene you are using. In the Sources list, confirm that the intended Media Source or VLC Video source is present and visible. Check that another source is not covering it.
- Open the source’s properties. Confirm that it points to the intended local file. If you meant to play a file but added Window Capture, add the file as a Media Source instead.
- Check the extension, but do not treat it as a codec guarantee. OBS documents Media Source support for MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM. That extension list is not a complete compatibility table for every codec or profile inside those containers.
- Compare with ordinary playback. See whether a standalone media player displays the file. If it also fails there, note that result; do not assume from the extension alone that the file is corrupted or unsupported.
Test Media Source with hardware decoding off
In Media Source properties, find Use hardware decoding when available. OBS documents this optional setting as off by default. When it is on and the video appears black, turn it off, apply the change, and test playback again. This is a reversible diagnostic, not a guaranteed fix: hardware decoding depends on a suitable decoder in the GPU.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
A historical OBS issue reported a black screen with hardware decoding enabled for a WebM Media Source on macOS 13 and OBS 28.1.2. That report supports testing the setting in a similar symptom, but it does not establish that hardware decoding is generally the cause on other systems or versions.
Compare playback with VLC Video
If Media Source still shows black, try VLC Video with the same file. OBS describes VLC Video as a separate source that uses VLC libraries for extended media support. Install VLC first if the source is unavailable; if your OBS installation is 64-bit, use 64-bit VLC.

If VLC Video shows the image but Media Source does not, you have narrowed the issue to a difference in playback or decoding paths. That comparison does not by itself identify the file’s codec or prove a permanent fix. VLC Video is an alternative test, not a promise that every file will play.

- Operating system and version, plus OBS version.
- File extension and, if you can identify it, the actual video codec and profile.
- Source type used in OBS: Media Source, VLC Video, or Window Capture.
- Whether a normal standalone player displays the file, and whether OBS plays audio while the picture is black.
- Whether Media Source hardware decoding is enabled, along with GPU and driver details.
- An OBS log from a session in which you reproduce the problem.
These facts make it possible to investigate the specific setup. The available OBS guidance does not establish a universal codec fix or a guaranteed success rate. Do not buy a GPU or install a codec pack based only on a black preview.
Do not confuse a black image with lag or capture trouble
If playback is choppy or OBS reports overload
That is a performance symptom, not the same diagnosis as a static black video. OBS performance guidance addresses lag and overloaded GPU or encoding workloads. If those symptoms are present, free GPU capacity, simplify resource-heavy scenes, and consider lowering output resolution or frame rate where appropriate. These steps are not established fixes for a video that remains black without stuttering.

If the black screen is a captured application or game
A black Window Capture of a game or another application is a different problem from a black Media Source file. Confirm which source is black before applying file-playback troubleshooting; the steps here do not establish a specific fix for application capture.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does a black OBS preview prove the video file is damaged?
No. A black preview alone does not establish that the file is corrupt, protected, or unsupported.
What details should I include when asking for OBS troubleshooting help?
Include your operating system and OBS version, file extension and codec if known, source type, whether audio plays, hardware-decoding setting, GPU and driver, and an OBS log from a reproduced session.
