Why Is My Compressed Video Larger After Converting It for a YouTube Stream?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A compressed video can get larger after conversion because the new export may encode more data per second—or more image data—than the original. Compare the files’ duration, resolution, frame rate, video and audio codecs, and bitrates before changing settings. Also clarify whether you mean a prerecorded upload or a live stream: YouTube has separate recommendations for those workflows.

Why a compressed video can grow after conversion

“Compressed” does not mean that every later export will be smaller. A converter or editor can re-encode an already compressed source using a higher bitrate, a higher resolution or frame rate, or an encoder setting that is less efficient for that footage. The output can therefore contain more data even if it looks similar.

Duration and audio matter too. A longer export has more time in which to store video and audio data; a higher audio bitrate can add data even when the picture settings are unchanged. Without the source and output files or their settings, there is no reliable way to name the cause in a particular case.

Compare the source and output before adjusting anything

Open each file’s media details in your editing program or a media-inspection utility and compare these properties:

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Duration: Check that the converted file is not longer because of added material, padding, or a different trim.
  • Resolution: A larger frame, such as converting 1080p footage to 4K, stores more picture information per frame. Upscaling does not restore detail that was absent from the source.
  • Frame rate: More frames per second can increase the amount of encoded video data. For an upload, YouTube advises matching the recording’s frame rate.
  • Video codec and encoder settings: Different codecs, encoders, and presets can produce different file sizes at similar visual quality. The codec name alone does not identify every setting used.
  • Video bitrate or quality target: A fixed bitrate, variable-bitrate target, or quality-based mode can produce a different output size. If the export is set to a higher data rate than the source, it may grow.
  • Audio codec and bitrate: Compare these separately from the video. Audio contributes to total size, but it is not determined by the video resolution.

As a rough diagnostic, when average bitrate is known, total size is driven by the combined audio and video data rates over the file’s duration, plus container overhead. So a larger file does not by itself prove that picture quality improved—or that the conversion failed.

Choose settings for a prerecorded YouTube upload

If you are uploading a finished recording, follow YouTube’s recommended upload encoding settings, not its live-ingestion bitrate table. YouTube recommends an MP4 container and H.264 video, variable bitrate, and the same frame rate as the recording. It says no bitrate limit is required and provides reference bitrates rather than a guaranteed file size.

For SDR uploads, YouTube’s current recommendations include these video bitrates:

Resolution 24, 25, or 30 fps 48, 50, or 60 fps
720p 5 Mbps 7.5 Mbps
1080p 8 Mbps 12 Mbps
2160p (4K) 35–45 Mbps 53–68 Mbps

These are YouTube’s recommended SDR upload bitrates, not a required minimum, a prediction of the resulting file size, or an instruction to raise the bitrate of a lower-bitrate source. YouTube’s upload guide lists stereo audio at 384 kbps and notes that audio playback bitrate is not related to video resolution. Actual file size also depends on duration and the selected encoding settings.

A practical export check

  1. In your editor, choose the source’s actual resolution and frame rate unless you have a specific reason to change them.
  2. For a conventional YouTube upload, select MP4 with H.264 video and AAC-LC audio if your editor offers those options. YouTube’s upload troubleshooting guidance also points to H.264, automatic data rate and key frames, common supported frame rates, AAC-LC audio, and choosing the original video size.
  3. Use a variable-bitrate or quality-based export where available, rather than raising a fixed bitrate without a quality reason. YouTube’s reference rates above can help you choose a sensible target for SDR footage, but they do not guarantee a particular size.
  4. Export a short representative section first if you need to compare quality and size. Check its output properties against the source before exporting the full recording.

Do not use live-stream bitrates as upload targets

A prerecorded file upload and a live encoder sending video to YouTube are different workflows. YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrate recommendations recommend constant bitrate (CBR) for live ingestion and set bitrate guidance by codec, resolution, and frame rate. For example, the current H.264 recommendations are 14 Mbps for 4K/30 and 50 Mbps for 4K/60. Those are live-ingestion figures; they are not settings to apply to a prerecorded upload simply because you plan to show that video during a stream.

Common causes and fixes

What you find Likely explanation What to try
Output bitrate is higher than the source The export target or quality setting writes more data per second. Use a more appropriate variable-bitrate or quality target; do not increase the source’s bitrate without a quality reason.
Output resolution or frame rate is higher The export is encoding more pixels or frames. Match the source unless the change is intentional and supported by the footage.
Output is longer The conversion may include extra material or use different in/out points. Check timeline boundaries, trims, and duration.
Picture settings look similar, but size still rises A different codec, encoder, or preset may be less efficient for this footage; audio settings may also differ. Compare codec, encoder mode, audio codec, and audio bitrate, then make one change at a time.
File size seems inconsistent with the video bitrate Video bitrate is only part of the total; audio, duration, and container overhead also contribute. Compare total duration and both audio and video settings, not just resolution or the video codec label.
You are setting a live encoder from upload guidance Upload and live-ingestion recommendations describe different workflows. Use YouTube’s live settings for an actual live feed and its upload guidance for a finished file.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your aim is to keep a YouTube channel showing prerecorded videos continuously, that is separate from fixing a larger export: StreamNeo loops videos you upload, but it does not convert them or go live from a camera. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The stream continues from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Each slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price, with no re-encode or quality tiers; StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly service is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or start the free first day.
