YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room is the main tool for creating, scheduling, monitoring, and managing a YouTube live stream—but it does not generate the video feed. For a continuous broadcast, you also need a source: a local software or hardware encoder for live camera, gameplay, or produced video, or a cloud service for looping prerecorded videos. Choose the source to match your content, then use Studio to check stream health and analytics.
What YouTube Studio controls—and what it does not
YouTube Studio provides the platform-side controls. In Live Control Room, you can set up a stream, schedule it, manage its details, view its preview, and monitor its health and performance. The encoder or hosted service supplies the actual audio and video feed. Studio alone cannot keep a video source running continuously.
That distinction matters when choosing a workflow: a camera or gameplay broadcast needs a live source, while a 24/7 loop of prerecorded content can be sent by an encoder or a cloud service that plays uploaded videos.
Set up and manage a stream in YouTube Studio
- Check eligibility. YouTube says the channel must be verified and must not have live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days. First-time enablement can take up to 24 hours. Check YouTube’s current live-streaming eligibility guidance before relying on a scheduled start.
- Open Live Control Room. In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live. Use the Stream tab to configure an encoder broadcast, or use Manage to create or schedule a stream and find current, upcoming, and past streams.
- Create or reuse a stream. Set the stream’s details in Studio. YouTube’s encoder workflow can retain previous stream settings for reuse; check the selected stream and its details before sending a new broadcast.
- Connect the feed. Copy the stream URL and stream key from Studio into your encoder’s service settings. Keep the key private: anyone with access to it may be able to send a feed to your stream. YouTube’s current instructions are in Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Start the encoder and check the preview. Send the feed from your software or hardware encoder, then confirm Studio receives it and shows the expected preview. Where the workflow presents a separate Go live control, use it in Live Control Room to begin the public broadcast.
- Operate from Studio. Keep Live Control Room open when practical to review stream status, respond to relevant messages, and use the Live Control Panel for key information such as views and chat revenue while working with an encoder or webcam.
For OBS-specific service and encoder configuration, use the OBS Project Help Portal. The precise settings depend on the source, connection, and stream format; YouTube’s encoder setup instructions should be the reference for the current stream URL, key, and workflow.

Use Live Control Room to monitor an always-on broadcast
Stream health
The stream-health area reports status and can show specific error messages. Use those messages to diagnose whether YouTube is receiving a usable feed; a running encoder by itself does not prove the stream is reaching YouTube correctly.
Real-time analytics
During a broadcast, YouTube’s real-time metrics include concurrent viewers, duration, likes, chat rate, views, average view duration, reactions, and reminders set. These help you see what is happening on the YouTube side, but they do not replace checking that the source is still playing and sending video.

Channel-level live analytics
For a selected period, channel-level live analytics include average concurrent viewers, peak concurrent viewers, and hours streamed. Use these for reviewing channel activity across streams rather than as a substitute for live incident monitoring. See YouTube’s guide to live-stream metrics for metric definitions.
Choose the right source for the content
| Workflow | Typical source | Best fit and trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| Live camera, gameplay, or produced audio/video | Local software encoder such as OBS, or a standalone hardware encoder | Use when the feed is being produced live and you need control over the production. A local setup depends on its computer or hardware and connection staying available; plan separately if you need an independent recording. |
| Prerecorded video played continuously | Cloud looping service or an encoder configured to play a playlist | A cloud service can run a scheduled loop without relying on a home computer staying on. Check what it supports, its current terms, and whether you have rights to rebroadcast every item. |
| Channel-side setup and diagnosis | YouTube Studio Live Control Room | Use for scheduling, stream management, health messages, preview, and YouTube analytics. It manages the YouTube side; it is not a standalone video source. |

Plan for the 12-hour archive and DVR limits
A continuous stream is not necessarily a complete YouTube replay. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. This is an archive caveat, not a stated hard maximum for how long a live feed can run. YouTube recommends making a local backup recording; if a complete recording is important, test your separate recording workflow rather than assuming Studio will preserve the entire session. See YouTube’s archive guidance.
DVR is a separate consideration: YouTube says DVR controls let viewers rewind during a live stream, but DVR capability may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. A viewer’s ability to rewind and the availability of a post-stream archive are not the same thing. See YouTube’s DVR guidance.

Operate a 24/7 stream responsibly
- Check the source as well as Studio. Studio reports what YouTube receives and how the stream is performing; confirm that the encoder or hosted playlist is also still running as intended.
- Protect the stream key. Store it only in the encoder or service that needs it. If you believe it has been exposed, replace it through the stream settings in Studio and update the authorized sender.
- Confirm content rights. A continuous loop does not change copyright obligations. Make sure you have permission for the music, video, gameplay footage, or other material you broadcast, and review YouTube’s current policies before streaming.
- Decide whether you need a recording. If a full replay matters, set up and verify a separate recording method; do not rely on a 24/7 YouTube stream being archived in full.
- Recheck scheduled details. Before a long run, verify the selected stream, visibility, title, and other details in Studio, and confirm the intended feed appears in preview.
Or let it run in the cloud
For prerecorded video—not a live camera feed—the StreamNeo workflow is:
