For words that viewers can turn on or off, an SRT file beside your video is not enough to caption an OBS YouTube live stream. You must deliver captions to YouTube through a compatible live-caption workflow. If subtitles only need to be visible in the picture, OBS can display a supported subtitle track through its VLC Video source, or you can render the text into the video before streaming.
Choose how viewers should see the subtitles
First decide whether the words should be part of the picture or a separate caption track. The two methods are not interchangeable: subtitles visible in OBS’s scene are encoded into the stream image, while live captions must be sent separately to YouTube.
| Method | Can viewers toggle or select captions? | Best fit | Key limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| YouTube Studio captions for an uploaded video | Yes, as video captions | Uploaded videos and replays | Uploading a sidecar caption file does not itself send captions during an OBS live stream. |
| OBS displays a subtitle track in the scene | No; text is part of the picture | Prerecorded clips where subtitles should always be visible | Compatibility and timing depend on the source, file, track, and installed software. |
| YouTube Live embedded or supported external captions | Yes, when delivered correctly | Live streams that need viewer-controlled captions | Requires a compatible encoder or supported caption-delivery workflow. YouTube currently says it supports one embedded caption track. |
| YouTube automatic live captions | Yes, if available for the stream | A possible fallback for eligible streams | Current YouTube guidance describes English-only captions with channel and latency restrictions; live automatic captions do not remain on the video after the stream. |
For a prerecorded game video, choose composited subtitles if the priority is that every viewer sees the words. Choose a separate live-caption workflow if viewers need YouTube’s caption controls, language selection, or accessibility options. Check the current YouTube requirements and channel settings before relying on automatic captions, whose availability and restrictions can change.
Prepare a subtitle sidecar file
YouTube recommends SubRip (.srt) or SubViewer (.sbv) as basic subtitle formats. An SRT is plain text containing numbered cues, timecodes, and the text to display. YouTube says SRT must be plain UTF-8 and does not recognize style markup. See YouTube’s supported subtitle and caption formats.

- Confirm the subtitle language and that the file matches the exact video version you will use. A cut, intro, or timing change can make otherwise correct cues appear too early or late.
- Use SRT or SBV for a basic sidecar. For SRT, save as plain UTF-8; do not depend on styling markup being rendered by YouTube.
- Review cue timing against the final video, especially the first and last cue and any sections changed during editing.
- Check spelling, speaker labels, and relevant non-speech audio cues for the intended audience.
- Test the file through the playback path you will actually use before relying on it during a stream.
Upload captions for a YouTube video or replay
This is the workflow for captions attached to an uploaded video, not for sending captions during an OBS live stream. In YouTube Studio, open the video’s Subtitles area, select a language, choose Add subtitles, then Upload file. Select whether the file includes timing, upload it, and save. YouTube also documents manual entry and auto-sync. For auto-sync, provide a transcript in the spoken language; YouTube cautions against using it for videos over an hour or with poor audio quality. Follow the current YouTube instructions for adding subtitles and captions, since Studio labels can change.
Display a subtitle track in OBS
OBS documents a VLC Video source with Subtitles Enabled and a Subtitle Track selector. Subtitles are off by default, and VLC must be installed for the VLC Video source to be available. The OBS guide also lists supported media containers including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM; that list does not guarantee that every subtitle codec or track combination will work. Consult the OBS Media Sources guide and test the file using your installed OBS and VLC versions.

- Install VLC if it is not already installed, then open OBS and add a VLC Video source to the scene that will play the clip.
- Load the video in the source and enable Subtitles Enabled. Choose the intended language or subtitle track under Subtitle Track.
- Play the clip and inspect the OBS preview. Check that the correct language appears, cue timing follows the dialogue, and text is legible against the game footage.
- If possible, run a private or unlisted YouTube test and watch it in the YouTube player. The audience sees the encoded output, not the OBS preview.
- If OBS does not render the track reliably, use a suitable video editor to render the subtitles visibly into a new video export, then test that export in OBS.
Displaying a track in OBS only puts its text into the scene image. It does not establish that OBS is sending viewer-selectable caption data to YouTube. Source compatibility can vary across operating systems, OBS builds, VLC versions, containers, and subtitle codecs; test the actual combination rather than assuming a track will work because the container is supported.
Send selectable captions during a YouTube Live stream
YouTube’s guidance is explicit: “To add captions to your live stream, you need to send captions to YouTube.” It documents captions embedded in video using EIA-608/CEA-708, or supported software that sends captions over HTTP. An ordinary SRT sidecar next to a media file is not the documented live-caption delivery method. Read YouTube Live caption requirements and confirm that the encoder or caption software you choose supports the required delivery path.

Embedded EIA-608/CEA-708 captions
For the embedded route, YouTube’s instructions say to enable closed captions in the live setup, select Embedded 608/708, and configure the encoder for EIA-608/CEA-708. Those standards support up to four language tracks, but YouTube says it currently supports one embedded caption track. That stated YouTube limit is current guidance accessed in 2026 and may change.
Supported caption software and event ingestion
YouTube also describes supported software sending captions over HTTP and event caption ingestion through a signed HTTP URL. Follow the current Studio and service instructions for the particular setup, and ensure the system time is accurate where required. Do not assume a software workflow is supported merely because it can create or display an SRT file; verify that it sends captions in a format and route YouTube accepts.

Automatic live captions are a separate feature
YouTube’s automatic live-caption guidance currently describes English-only automatic captions, channel and latency restrictions, and possible limitations related to audio or language. It also says automatic captions generated during a live stream do not remain on the video after the stream. Check the current YouTube automatic captioning guidance and the live settings for your channel; eligibility and availability are not guaranteed.

- No subtitles appear in OBS: Confirm you used VLC Video rather than assuming every media source exposes subtitle controls, that VLC is installed, that subtitles are enabled, and that the intended track is selected. Try the actual file again after checking its container and subtitle format.
- The wrong language appears: Reopen the track selector and verify the language against the file’s metadata or track order. Preview the whole clip rather than relying on a single opening cue.
- Subtitles are out of sync: Check that the sidecar or embedded track matches the final edited video, including the opening and ending. If the video was trimmed or had an intro inserted, correct cue timing or regenerate the subtitle file.
- Text looks different or loses styling: YouTube does not recognize styling markup in SRT. For a consistent on-screen appearance, render subtitles into the video image in an editor and inspect the resulting export.
- Viewers cannot turn subtitles on: If OBS displays the subtitles in its scene, they are part of the picture, not a selectable caption track. For selectable live captions, verify the supported YouTube delivery path end to end and test in the YouTube player.
- Captions work live but are absent from the replay: Live caption delivery and captions attached to an uploaded video are distinct workflows. Check the replay in YouTube Studio and add or verify video captions there if needed.
- Automatic captions are missing: Confirm current channel eligibility, latency, language, and audio conditions in YouTube’s live settings. Do not treat automatic live captions as a permanent replay caption file.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your stream is prerecorded video that should loop on YouTube, StreamNeo can keep it running from the cloud: upload the video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home. The uploaded quality streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; StreamNeo does not re-encode it. It automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, and monthly billing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos and streams to YouTube; it does not go live from a camera. A sidecar SRT alone still does not provide YouTube Live captions, so use a separate supported caption-delivery workflow if selectable captions are required.
