H.264 High or Main Profile for Pre-Recorded YouTube Playlist Videos?

For pre-recorded YouTube uploads, High Profile is the profile YouTube explicitly recommends. Main is not named as an equal alternative, but the guidance does not say every Main export will fail.

Use H.264 High Profile if you want to follow YouTube’s general recommended settings for pre-recorded uploads. YouTube names High Profile, not Main Profile, in that guidance. That is a recommendation—not a statement that every Main Profile file will fail to upload or process.

High vs. Main: which profile should you choose?

YouTube’s general upload guidance specifies H.264 High Profile. It does not list Main Profile as an equal alternative, nor does it provide a detailed comparison of their compatibility or quality trade-offs. So, when your goal is to match YouTube’s stated recommendation, choose High. YouTube’s recommended upload encoding settings

The guidance does not establish that Main Profile is universally incompatible or that a particular Main Profile export will fail. If your editor or encoder offers only Main, check that software’s format guidance or test the resulting file. The cited YouTube recommendation alone cannot guarantee how a specific export will process.

Recommended export settings for a pre-recorded upload

For a typical SDR video, use the following as a practical checklist based on YouTube’s general upload recommendations. Menu names vary by editing and encoding software.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Container: MP4, with no edit lists and the moov atom at the start of the file (“Fast Start”).
  • Video codec and profile: H.264 High Profile.
  • Scan and encoding structure: progressive scan; two consecutive B frames; closed GOP, with GOP length half the frame rate; and CABAC.
  • Bitrate mode: variable bitrate (VBR). YouTube says no bitrate limit is required and offers the figures below as recommendations for reference, not as a mandatory ceiling.
  • Chroma: 4:2:0.
  • Frame rate: encode and upload at the frame rate used for recording. YouTube lists 24, 25, 30, 48, 50 and 60 fps as common rates and says other rates are acceptable.
  • SDR color: BT.709.
  • Audio: AAC-LC, Opus or Eclipsa Audio at 48 kHz. Channel configuration depends on the audio setup.

These are YouTube’s general upload recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular encoder’s preset will use every setting exactly as named. Check the export summary or file properties when your software exposes them. YouTube Help: recommended upload encoding settings

Choose the bitrate by resolution and frame rate

YouTube publishes different reference bitrates for SDR depending on resolution and frame-rate group. Select the row and column that match your export; the numbers are recommendations, not universal quality thresholds. YouTube does not state a publication year for this guidance on the page reviewed. SDR resolution 24/25/30 fps 48/50/60 fps
360p 1 Mbps 1.5 Mbps
480p 2.5 Mbps 4 Mbps
720p 5 Mbps 7.5 Mbps
1080p 8 Mbps 12 Mbps
1440p 16 Mbps 24 Mbps
2160p (4K) 35–45 Mbps 53–68 Mbps
8K 80–160 Mbps 120–240 Mbps

The table covers YouTube’s listed SDR resolution groups. Use the applicable frame-rate column; do not substitute a live-stream bitrate just because the same video may later be used in a stream.

HDR needs separate export guidance

High Profile plus BT.709 is not a complete HDR workflow. YouTube’s HDR guidance calls for correct metadata for the transfer function (PQ or HLG), Rec. 2020 primaries and the Rec. 2020 non-constant-luminance matrix. It recommends VP9 Profile 2, AV1 or HEVC/H.265 for HDR because they support 10-bit encoding and HDR metadata at reasonable bitrates. YouTube lists H.264 10-bit as workable, but says it requires very high bitrates. Consult the dedicated YouTube HDR upload guidance for an HDR export rather than applying the SDR recommendations unchanged.

Pre-recorded uploads and live streams use different bitrate guidance

For a pre-recorded file, YouTube’s upload page specifies VBR and gives upload bitrate references. For live ingestion, YouTube’s separate encoder guidance specifies constant bitrate (CBR) and has its own live-stream settings. Do not use live-stream bitrate recommendations as the export target for a pre-recorded upload, or treat the upload VBR guidance as live encoder advice. YouTube Help: live encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions

YouTube also publishes a separate music-video encoding specification. Its delivery context and bitrate figures are not the general upload table above.

Troubleshoot common export problems

  • Your export preset offers Main but not High: the general recommendation favors High, but that guidance does not say a Main export must fail. Consult the encoder’s documentation or test the file rather than assuming a platform guarantee.
  • The uploaded video’s color looks wrong: check that the transfer characteristics, color primaries and matrix metadata match the master. For SDR, YouTube points creators to BT.709. YouTube Help: troubleshoot audio or video issues with uploads
  • You are preparing a live encoder instead of an upload file: use YouTube’s live-stream guidance for that workflow; its bitrate mode differs from the pre-recorded upload guidance.
  • You are exporting HDR: use the separate HDR guidance and verify the HDR metadata rather than relying on the SDR profile and color checklist.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you want pre-recorded videos or a playlist to run continuously as a YouTube live stream, StreamNeo is a separate option from choosing an upload profile: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It streams the files as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot regardless of quality, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo, then start your free day.
