How to Reduce MP4 Size for a 24/7 YouTube Channel on a Limited Data Plan in India

For a 24/7 YouTube stream, outgoing bitrate—not the MP4’s stored size—drives ongoing upload use. Estimate monthly data, tune live settings, and re-encode only when you need a smaller file.

Compressing an MP4 does not by itself reduce the data a 24/7 YouTube live stream uses. The key number is the stream’s total outgoing bitrate: lower that in your encoder, and the continuous upload uses less data. Re-encode the MP4 only when you need a smaller file for storage or transfer—or when you have confirmed the file’s encoding is affecting your broadcast settings.

First, separate MP4 file size from live-stream data use

MP4 is a container for video and audio. Re-encoding its contents can make the stored file smaller, usually by trading away some quality. A live broadcast, however, continuously uploads the encoder’s output. If that encoder is configured to send at a fixed bitrate, shrinking the source MP4 does not lower the configured live output rate.

This distinction matters when you loop prerecorded video: the live encoder keeps sending its configured stream while the MP4 plays. For reducing data used by the broadcast, change the encoder’s output settings. For saving space on a drive or reducing transfer time, re-encode the MP4.

Estimate the data your stream will use

For a steady stream, a useful decimal-unit estimate is: total outgoing bitrate in Mbps × 10.8 = approximate GB per day. Multiply the daily estimate by 30 for an approximate 30-day total.

Total outgoing bitrate Approximate data per day Approximate data per 30 days
0.5 Mbps 5.4 GB 162 GB
1 Mbps 10.8 GB 324 GB
3 Mbps 32.4 GB 972 GB

These are arithmetic estimates for a continuous upload, not provider usage measurements. They exclude protocol overhead, reconnects, other devices and apps using the connection, and differences in how an operator counts data. Use the total stream bitrate, including audio; if you start with video bitrate alone, add audio and allow for overhead. Compare the estimate with your plan’s usable monthly allowance and its fair-use or post-cap throttling terms. No particular Indian provider or plan is established here, so check your own plan rather than assuming an allowance will cover a 24/7 stream.

Choose a live bitrate that fits the connection and picture

YouTube’s live encoder guidance, accessed October 3, 2026, lists the following recommendations. They are platform guidance, not a guarantee of acceptable quality for every scene or of a stable connection.

Resolution and frame rate H.264 range AV1 or H.265 range
720p at 30 fps 3–8 Mbps 2–6 Mbps
480p at 30 fps 0.4–4 Mbps 0.3–3 Mbps

The ranges show why resolution and frame rate are part of the decision: a lower setting can make a lower bitrate practical, but whether the result looks good depends on motion, fine detail, text, and compression artifacts. Start with the lowest resolution and bitrate that preserve details your viewers need. Test with representative footage—including the channel’s typical motion, graphics, and audio—before settling on an all-day setting.

YouTube also recommends CBR, a two-second keyframe interval (not exceeding four seconds), RTMP or RTMPS, and AAC or MP3 audio. Its live encoder page lists a recommended 128 Kbps for stereo audio; this is a recommendation, not a universal requirement. Follow the current guidance for the codec and ingest setup you use: YouTube live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

Set up and test the live encoder

  1. Work out your data ceiling. Check your Indian plan’s usable monthly data, fair-use conditions, and throttling terms. Reserve room for other household traffic and overhead; the calculation above is an estimate, not an exact bill prediction.
  2. Pick a starting resolution and frame rate. Choose the lowest setting that retains the channel’s essential detail. For a mostly static scene, test whether reducing resolution or frame rate still leaves text and graphics legible.
  3. Set the encoder output. Use a supported codec and RTMP/RTMPS ingest. Set CBR, choose a bitrate within YouTube’s published range for the selected codec and resolution, and set the keyframe interval to two seconds without exceeding four seconds. Include audio when estimating total upload.
  4. Check sustained upload, not just a speed-test peak. YouTube says the total streaming bitrate cannot exceed available upload bandwidth. A brief speed-test result does not establish that your connection can sustain the setting around the clock; leave room for variation rather than treating the peak as a target. YouTube does not set a universal headroom percentage. See its streaming tips.
  5. Run a representative test and monitor it. Check stream health in YouTube Live Control Room and watch playback from a separate viewer connection. Inspect motion, audio, text legibility, and artifacts. If the connection or image is unsatisfactory, lower bitrate or resolution cautiously and test again.

When—and how—to make the MP4 file smaller

Re-encode when a smaller stored file will help with disk space or transfer, or when the file itself is being prepared for upload. YouTube’s upload recommendations cover a separate workflow from live ingest: they recommend the MP4 container, H.264 video, AAC-LC, Opus, or Eclipsa Audio, and a 48 kHz sample rate. The page also recommends placing the MP4 “moov atom” at the front (Fast Start), which can help progressive playback but does not reduce a live encoder’s data rate. See YouTube’s recommended upload encoding settings.

  1. Keep the original. Work from a copy so you can revert if the new encode damages detail or audio.
  2. Encode a short representative sample first. Include the kinds of motion, small text, and audio found in the full video.
  3. Adjust one or more encoding choices. Lowering video bitrate, resolution, or frame rate can reduce size; a quality-target approach such as FFmpeg’s CRF can also change size and quality. The result depends on the source and settings, so no single CRF value guarantees a particular file size.
  4. Inspect before replacing the source. Compare fine detail, motion, text, and audio, and check the output file. FFmpeg’s official documentation describes the libx264 CRF quality target and preset speed/compression trade-off: FFmpeg codecs documentation.

Avoid repeatedly re-encoding an already compressed file: each lossy encode can discard more information. If the live encoder remains fixed at the same output bitrate, a smaller re-encoded source may save storage but will not cut the configured live upload.

Diagnose the real source of high usage or stream trouble

  • The stream uses more data than expected: Recalculate from total outgoing bitrate and runtime; include audio and account for overhead, reconnects, and other network use. Check how your operator counts data.
  • The image breaks up or YouTube reports stream-health problems: The connection may not sustain the total bitrate. Test sustained upload and reduce bitrate or resolution, then monitor again.
  • The upload speed looks adequate briefly, but the stream is unstable: A peak reading does not prove continuous capacity. Retest under typical network conditions and allow for variation.
  • The MP4 is smaller but data use has not changed: That is expected when the live output bitrate is separately configured. Adjust the encoder output to reduce broadcast upload.
  • The lower-bitrate picture is hard to read: Restore enough resolution or bitrate for the channel’s essential detail, or test a different balance of resolution, frame rate, and bitrate. Judge using representative playback, not the setting label alone.
