How to Fix OBS Audio Clipping in a 24/7 Fireplace Live Stream

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix OBS audio clipping by finding and lowering the first overloaded point in the fireplace audio signal chain. Check the source or device first, then the operating-system and application levels, and finally the OBS fader. A compressor can tame peaks; put a limiter last as a safety ceiling. Neither can repair audio that was already distorted earlier in the chain.

Find which source is clipping

Start with the OBS Audio Mixer and identify the channel carrying the fireplace sound. It may be a live microphone or other device, a Media Source, desktop or application audio, or audio routed through hardware. Adjust only that source—not unrelated mixer channels.

Clipping is distortion caused when audio cannot be accurately reproduced by the gear or stage it passes through. The useful question is not just whether OBS shows a high meter reading, but where the sound first becomes distorted.

  • If you play a prerecorded file, listen to it outside OBS and check its playback or media-source level.
  • If you use a live input, listen at the device or hardware monitor if available, and check physical gain controls.
  • If audio passes through a mixer, interface, or other hardware, check each stage in that route.

OBS recommends checking levels from the device onward and listening both at the device and in OBS. Its Audio Mixer Guide also explains that mixer meters show recent peaks through peak hold.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Listen and check the meter before changing filters

  1. Play a representative stretch of fireplace audio, including the loudest crackles or transitions you can find.
  2. Listen at the source or device monitor, if available. If distortion is already there, OBS is not its origin.
  3. Turn on OBS Audio Monitoring for the relevant source and listen to what OBS receives. Use a suitable monitoring device and confirm the monitoring route is not feeding the sound back into the stream.
  4. Watch the source’s meter and peak indicator while the audio plays. A short transient can distort even if the meter looks quiet when checked later.

OBS’s technical guide identifies 0 dBFS as the digital maximum: audio above that ceiling in the final recording or stream clips. OBS processes audio internally in floating point, but that does not make an over-maximum final output safe. The guide also describes -9 dBFS as a permitted-maximum reference in its meter discussion; it is not a fireplace-specific target or a rule imposed by YouTube. Keep peaks below the digital ceiling, then judge the sound by monitoring and recording. (See OBS Audio Mixer Technical Details.)

Lower levels in signal-chain order

Make small changes, then listen and check the meter again at the next point in the chain. OBS notes that device behavior varies; some hardware may require vendor software or a manual.

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
  1. Hardware or device: If the signal is distorted at the device monitor, lower its physical gain or mixer control, if present. For a live microphone, check its input gain; for a prerecorded source, inspect the file and playback path instead.
  2. Operating system: Check the relevant input or output device level. Do not change a different device just because its controls are easier to find.
  3. Application or media source: Check the playback application or source level feeding OBS. Reduce it if distortion begins there.
  4. OBS: Once upstream levels are reasonable, lower the source’s mixer fader if you still need to balance the level. A fader downstream cannot clean audio that was already clipped upstream.

There is no single meter target for every fireplace stream: the source and listening context matter, and the guidance for speech does not automatically apply to ambient audio. Make the adjustment by listening to both quiet ambience and loud crackles, and confirm with a recording.

Use compression or limiting only if peaks still need control

Filters can manage dynamic peaks, but they are not a substitute for correcting an overloaded source. In OBS, select the source in the Audio Mixer, open its menu, choose Filters, and add a filter with the + control. The exact interface wording or layout may vary by OBS version.

Compressor: reduce louder portions

A compressor reduces levels above a threshold and is typically placed near the beginning of a filter chain. OBS documents these defaults: 10:1 ratio, -18 dB threshold, 6 ms attack, 60 ms release, and 0 dB output gain. They are defaults, not recommended fireplace settings. Adjust by listening and observing gain reduction rather than copying them blindly. See the OBS Compressor Filter documentation.

Limiter: catch peaks at the end

A limiter is intended to prevent the signal from exceeding its threshold. Put it last in the filter chain so it can catch peaks after earlier processing. OBS documents a default threshold of -6 dB and a 60 ms release; these values are not guaranteed to suit your source. Choose a ceiling that leaves appropriate headroom for your actual stream. A limiter acts on its output: it cannot restore clean sound if the file, device, or an earlier stage has already distorted. See the OBS Limiter Filter documentation.

Do not add unrelated processing

  • Gain: OBS includes a Gain filter, but adding gain can worsen clipping. Use it only after identifying the problem and setting upstream levels appropriately.
  • Noise suppression or noise gate: These are not clipping fixes. They can suppress or chop off quiet fire ambience, so avoid microphone-oriented noise processing on a fireplace track unless you have a specific need and have listened carefully.

OBS lists these filter types in its Filters Guide.

Test a recording before leaving the stream on

  1. Record a representative segment that includes quiet portions and the loudest crackles or transitions. OBS recommends recording a normal session and listening back.
  2. Listen to the recording—not only the live monitor—and check whether the distortion remains. If it does, work back through the chain to find the earliest stage where it appears.
  3. Check left and right channels if the source is stereo, and verify that monitoring is not routed back into the stream.
  4. Observe the audio for long enough to catch natural peaks before relying on the setup unattended. There is no published OBS-required monitoring interval or universal unattended-stream target.

Troubleshoot by symptom

What you hear or see Likely place to investigate What to do
Crackling is audible in the file or at the device monitor before OBS. The source recording, playback level, input gain, or hardware path. Lower the level at the first affected stage; inspect the source file or hardware controls.
The source sounds clean outside OBS, but OBS monitoring distorts. A level or processing stage in the route into or through OBS. Check application and operating-system levels, then the OBS source level and filters. Change one stage at a time and listen again.
The meter reaches its ceiling on occasional loud crackles. Transient peaks at the source or an upstream gain stage. Reduce the excessive upstream level. If needed, use compression for peaks and a limiter last as a final ceiling.
A limiter is active, but the recording still sounds distorted. Audio may already be clipped before reaching the limiter. Listen earlier in the chain and correct the first distorted stage; the limiter cannot repair it.
Quiet fire sounds disappear or pulse after adding filters. Noise suppression or gating may be acting on the ambience. Remove or adjust that processing unless it has a clear purpose; retest quiet sections as well as crackles.
The recording sounds louder or distorted only after monitoring is enabled. Possible monitoring feedback or unintended routing. Check the monitoring device and routing so monitored audio is not returned to the stream.
