Affordable Raspberry Pi Storage for a 24/7 YouTube FFmpeg Playlist in India

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a Raspberry Pi running a 24/7 YouTube playlist through FFmpeg, use a microSD card for a simple, lower-cost OS boot setup when the videos are not stored on the Pi. Choose a USB SSD if you need local media storage or USB boot; first confirm that your exact Pi model supports the boot method and that the drive and any enclosure fit its USB and power limits. Raspberry Pi’s published OS capacity recommendations are 8 GB for Raspberry Pi OS Lite and 32 GB for Raspberry Pi OS Full—these are OS recommendations, not estimates for a video library.

Choose storage based on what the Pi will store

The right option depends less on the phrase “24/7” than on the job the drive must do. If FFmpeg reads video from another source and the Pi needs only its operating system and working files, a microSD card may be enough. If the playlist’s videos will be kept locally, an external USB SSD is a more direct storage option. The exact capacity cannot be determined without the combined size of the media and information about whether FFmpeg downloads, caches, records, or converts it.

Option Useful when What Raspberry Pi documents What to check
microSD card You need OS boot storage and do not plan to keep a substantial media library on the Pi, or want a simple starting setup. microSD is a typical boot medium. Raspberry Pi recommends at least 8 GB for Raspberry Pi OS Lite and 32 GB for Raspberry Pi OS Full. Its documentation lists official cards in 32, 64, and 128 GB sizes. Raspberry Pi getting-started documentation; Raspberry Pi SD Cards documentation. The OS minimum does not include a local video library. The cited documentation does not compare current India prices, card endurance, or retail value.
USB SSD You need external storage for local media or want to boot from USB on a compatible Pi. Raspberry Pi documents USB mass-storage boot and connecting external SSDs. Raspberry Pi computer hardware documentation; Raspberry Pi external storage documentation. Verify boot support and configuration for the exact Pi, the USB connection or bridge, and the drive’s power requirements. Raspberry Pi cautions that attached disks can need additional power.
SSD plus USB enclosure You select a bare SSD that does not already have a USB connection. An enclosure can provide the USB connection needed to attach the drive. Match the enclosure to the SSD’s physical size and interface. No exact enclosure compatibility is established by the cited documentation.

How much storage does a 24/7 playlist need?

There is no universal capacity for a 24/7 playlist: it depends on the total size of the files the Pi must hold, plus space for the operating system and any temporary files FFmpeg creates. Raspberry Pi’s 8 GB Lite and 32 GB Full recommendations cover the OS installation, not the playlist. If videos are streamed or read from elsewhere rather than stored locally, the storage requirement may be much smaller than if the Pi holds the whole library.

Before buying, total the size of the media that will actually reside on the Pi and leave room for system and working files. If FFmpeg will transcode, record, or cache video locally, account for those files too. The title alone does not establish which of these workloads applies, so it cannot support a specific capacity recommendation.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Check your Pi’s boot and storage compatibility

Raspberry Pi describes microSD as the typical boot medium and notes that faster storage with higher read and write speeds can improve overall performance. Other supported boot media include USB mass storage and, on supported devices, PCIe/NVMe storage. USB mass-storage boot is available on the flagship series from Raspberry Pi 2B version 1.2 onward; Pi 4 and newer flagship models support it by default when USB boot is specified in the boot order. Check the documentation for your exact model and firmware before relying on USB boot or assuming a particular connection will work. Raspberry Pi computer hardware documentation; Raspberry Pi getting-started documentation.

If you are buying a drive for a Raspberry Pi in India, compare the complete cost and practical fit: required capacity, interface, boot compatibility, power needs, warranty, and ease of replacement. Current Indian listings, stock, seller quality, prices, and the compatibility of specific products are not established here. A search for a USB SSD for Raspberry Pi is a reasonable starting point; a microSD card is the direct alternative for OS boot storage.

Power matters for a drive that stays connected

Power recommendations vary by Pi model and attached peripherals. Raspberry Pi recommends 5 V at 3 A for the Pi 4 Model B and its 27 W USB-C supply for Pi 5. Its documentation also lists Pi 5 and Pi 500 with a recommended 5 V/5 A supply. On Pi 5, the documented maximum total current for USB peripherals is 1.6 A with a 5 A supply and 600 mA with a 3 A supply. These are Raspberry Pi specifications, not measurements for a particular SSD. Raspberry Pi computer hardware documentation; Raspberry Pi getting-started documentation.

Do not assume a bus-powered SSD will work with every Pi and power-supply combination. Check the drive and enclosure requirements against the Pi’s available power, especially if other USB peripherals are attached. For a 24/7 setup, stable power, safe shutdown, and backups are sensible practical considerations; the documentation cited here does not establish a particular UPS, drive endurance rating, or guarantee of uninterrupted operation.

Mount an external drive and start it automatically

Raspberry Pi’s configuration guide explains that an external hard disk, SSD, or USB stick can be connected to a Pi and mounted to access its data. For a headless playlist setup, configure the mount deliberately rather than relying on a desktop automount prompt.

  1. Connect the drive and identify it. Attach the external drive, then run lsblk in a terminal to identify its device and partitions.
  2. Choose a mount location. Create or select a directory such as /mnt/mydisk for the mounted filesystem.
  3. Mount and verify access. Mount the appropriate filesystem at that directory and confirm that the Pi can read the files your FFmpeg command needs.
  4. Configure startup mounting. Use the filesystem’s UUID in fstab so the drive mounts when the system starts. Follow the Raspberry Pi guide for the filesystem and configuration details.
  5. Disconnect safely. Shut down the Pi or manually unmount the drive before unplugging it. Raspberry Pi OS Lite does not provide the desktop automount behavior described for popular filesystems.

Raspberry Pi’s external storage guide documents these steps. Verify the mount is present after a restart before relying on a playlist that references files on the external drive.
