IBM’s reviewed documentation describes playlists made from videos in its own library—not a field for pasting a YouTube playlist URL—so you need usable source files before you begin. The video is prerecorded; the viewing experience may still include live features such as chat and Q&A.
What you need before setting up the loop
- An IBM Video Streaming channel and access to its channel manager.
- The original files for the videos you want to show, or files you are authorized to rebroadcast. IBM’s playlist workflow uses videos in its VOD library.
- A sequence in which each video is longer than two minutes. IBM Support’s Live Playlist best practices specifies this minimum for playlist items.
- A planned start time, stop time, and buffer content for the opening and, if useful, the ending.
If the videos are your own YouTube uploads, YouTube documents downloading your uploaded videos through its help page. YouTube Premium offline viewing is for playback in supported YouTube app or browser experiences; it is not documented as a way to export files for IBM ingestion. For someone else’s videos, obtain the source file and permission from the rights holder rather than relying on a third-party downloader. See YouTube’s instructions for downloading videos you uploaded.
Rights must cover the planned livestream use, including any music in the videos. YouTube’s livestream terms and conditions say providers must have the necessary rights for livestream exploitation. What permission is needed depends on the work, territories, and use.
Set up a 24/7 simulated-live playlist
- Get your authorized source files. Collect the actual video files; IBM’s documentation does not establish direct import from a YouTube playlist URL. A YouTube playlist can guide the order, but it is not itself the documented input to IBM Live Playlist.
- Upload the files to IBM Video Streaming as VODs. Add each video to the IBM video library so it is available to the playlist workflow. IBM’s playlist overview describes playlists built from videos in that library.
- Initialize the channel if it has never carried a true live broadcast. IBM Support says a channel must first send a real live stream for more than two minutes to establish its first true live broadcast. Use an encoder or streaming app for this initial broadcast; the later prerecorded loop is handled by Live Playlist.
- Create a manual Live Playlist and set its order. Choose manual ordering for a fixed sequence, then add and arrange the uploaded VODs. IBM’s playlist overview describes manual and dynamic playlists and allows up to 200 videos in a playlist.
- Prepare the opening and transitions. IBM says a scheduled playlist may take up to two minutes after its scheduled start to begin. Place a countdown, holding slide, or music buffer first, and have the intended program start at least two minutes into that first item. Each playlist video must be longer than two minutes. Match the resolution and caption languages across the items. If you want prerecorded VOD captions to display, turn IBM Live Captioning off for this simulated-live channel.
- Enable looping and choose a stop time. In the Live Playlist scheduling controls, enable loop broadcast and set the looping stop time. IBM defines looping as restarting playlist videos repeatedly until that stop time. Check the channel manager’s local timezone when scheduling, and clear conflicting scheduled broadcasts.
- Review the viewer experience. A playlist embed or share link presents the IBM viewing experience; IBM separately documents embedding its player and playlist on a website. An IBM playlist embed is not a feed from YouTube.

- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
When an encoder is needed—and when it is not
An encoder is needed for the initial true live broadcast if the channel has never had one, or for actual live programming. It is not required to keep the later VOD playlist looping. IBM documents software and hardware encoder options, including OBS, Wirecast, and NewTek TriCaster.
Send the initial real broadcast
- In IBM Video Streaming, open the target channel and go to Broadcast Settings → Encoder Settings.
- Reveal the RTMP address and stream key. Keep the key private; anyone with it may be able to send a stream to the channel.
- In your encoder, enter IBM’s RTMP address in the server or URL field and the stream key in the matching key or name field. IBM also documents RTMPS support in its encoder materials.
- Start a genuine live contribution and keep it running for more than two minutes. Then stop the encoder when the initial broadcast is complete; use Live Playlist for the prerecorded loop.
IBM’s setup instructions for these encoders are at How to stream to IBM Video Streaming using Wirecast, OBS, TriCaster or any RTMP encoder.

What the loop does—and what it does not do
Live Playlist presents prerecorded VODs as simulated-live programming, repeating them until the stop time. The video itself is not being captured live. IBM says features such as chat and Q&A can remain live, but that does not turn the prerecorded picture into a live camera feed. A genuine live encoder broadcast is a separate option for live content.
For a fixed lineup, manual playlist ordering gives you direct control over sequence. The reviewed IBM materials also describe dynamic playlists, but do not establish that a YouTube playlist link can be used as one. If you are deciding between looping VODs and a real live encoder contribution, consider the content source and rights, whether you need a scheduled stop time, transition behavior, caption setup, and whether the program needs an encoder.

Troubleshooting common setup problems
- The YouTube playlist link is not accepted: IBM’s documented workflow uses VODs in its library, not a YouTube playlist URL. Obtain authorized files and upload them to IBM.
- The playlist cannot be used on a channel with no prior broadcast: Send a genuine live stream from an encoder or streaming app for more than two minutes, then set up the Live Playlist.
- A clip is rejected or fails playlist requirements: Check that every item is longer than two minutes.
- The show appears late: IBM says startup may be up to two minutes after the scheduled time. Put a buffer item first and begin the intended program at least two minutes into it.
- Captions do not appear as expected: Match resolution and caption languages across all playlist items. For prerecorded VOD captions, turn IBM Live Captioning off on the simulated-live channel.
- The loop stops sooner or later than intended: Verify the loop broadcast setting, stop time, channel manager local timezone, and any conflicting scheduled broadcast.
- The stream key does not work for the initial live send: Recheck the RTMP address and key in the encoder’s server/URL and key/name fields, and confirm you copied the values for the intended channel.
- The content is blocked or creates a rights issue: Confirm you have permission for livestream use of every video and its audio, including music; permission to watch or download is not necessarily permission to rebroadcast.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is a continuous YouTube channel built from uploaded videos, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It keeps running with your computer off, streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month.
