There is no universally established best time to post YouTube Shorts. YouTube says publishing time is not known to affect a video’s long-term performance, though posting while your audience is active may help with early viewership. Use your channel’s audience activity as a scheduling clue—not as an algorithm shortcut—and compare similar Shorts over time.
Does posting time matter for YouTube Shorts?
It may matter for early viewership: YouTube says publishing when your audience is most active “can be beneficial for early viewership.” But YouTube also says publish time is not known to affect a video’s long-term viewership. It does not identify a universally best hour or day for Shorts. YouTube’s performance FAQ distinguishes that possible early benefit from long-term performance.
Shorts recommendations are personalized and respond to viewer interest and performance. YouTube describes signals including whether people choose to watch, whether they keep watching, average view duration, average percentage viewed, likes, and post-watch survey results. A convenient upload time cannot substitute for making a Short that viewers choose and enjoy. YouTube’s Shorts discovery guidance explains those recommendation signals.
How to find a posting window for your channel
- Check audience activity. In YouTube Studio, open Analytics, select the Audience tab, and review When your viewers are on YouTube. The report reflects the previous 28 days. YouTube documents it as a way to understand when viewers are online and plan Premieres or live streams; for Shorts, treat the pattern as a useful starting point rather than proof that a particular upload time will improve recommendations. - Account for where your viewers are. Choose a few plausible windows that make sense for your audience’s time zones and your own production routine. If viewers are spread across several regions, one local clock time may not suit everyone. YouTube notes that some audience data may be limited.
- Compare like with like. When evaluating windows, use Shorts with reasonably similar topics and formats. YouTube advises comparing the same content format because audience behavior can vary between formats. Its content-performance guidance describes the relevant analytics and comparisons.
- Review more than total views. In YouTube Studio’s Content tab, check Shorts measures such as views, likes, subscribers, shown in feed, and how many viewers chose to view rather than swipe away. Use the measures together: raw views alone do not show whether a posting window or the Short itself prompted a stronger response.
- Repeat the comparison. Do not treat one unusually strong or weak Short as proof that a time slot works. Compare multiple similar Shorts across your candidate windows. YouTube does not prescribe a controlled testing protocol, so this is a practical way to avoid overreading a single result.
- Choose a schedule you can sustain. YouTube’s Shorts upload guidance encourages creators to weigh frequency, consistency, content volume, production time, and monetary cost against returns. A workable schedule is more useful than an idealized hour you cannot maintain. See YouTube’s upload-schedule guidance.
How to judge whether a time window is useful
Use a small set of candidate windows and assess them against the same practical criteria. YouTube does not provide a universal benchmark percentage or a prescribed number of test uploads, so the goal is to spot a repeatable pattern in your own channel data, not to prove a guaranteed causal effect.

- Audience fit: Does the window overlap with activity among the viewers you want to reach, taking their time zones into account?
- Comparable uploads: Are the Shorts similar enough in subject and format for a fair comparison?
- Early response: How do views and viewer choice compare, including shown in feed and chose-to-view versus swiped away?
- Viewing quality: Where available, consider retention measures such as average view duration and average percentage viewed, alongside likes and subscribers.
- Repeatability: Does the pattern recur across several comparable Shorts, rather than depend on one outlier?
- Production burden: Can you reliably publish in that window without sacrificing the time needed to make the videos?
