Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Short answer: OBS Studio is a local encoder; Wowza Video (formerly Wowza Streaming Cloud) is a cloud service that can receive, process and deliver streams. They are not direct substitutes in Wowza’s documented combined workflow. Wowza’s legacy documentation describes looping a hosted MP4 through its transcoder, but that keeps the transcoder running and accruing charges until it is stopped or scheduled to stop. A July 2025 Wowza support response said scheduled playlist delivery of prerecorded video to YouTube was not then available in Wowza Video; that dated answer does not establish the feature’s status today.
If the goal is simply to keep prerecorded video looping on YouTube Live, StreamNeo is the most direct cloud option here: upload a video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It runs continuously from the cloud, supports uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and offers the first day free.
What each product does
OBS Studio: a local encoder
OBS runs on your computer and sends an encoded stream to a destination. In Wowza’s documented combined setup, OBS sends an RTMP source stream to Wowza Video; it is not the cloud service itself. That tutorial has the user start the Wowza live stream first, then start OBS to send the source. It does not establish that Wowza Video is required when sending a stream directly from OBS to YouTube.
Wowza Video: cloud processing and delivery
Wowza says its former Wowza Streaming Cloud name is now Wowza Video, retaining functionality for existing customers while adding platform features. Its legacy file-streaming documentation describes a transcoder downloading and looping an H.264 MP4 hosted on a web server or supported cloud storage. This is a cloud workflow, not simply OBS with a different interface.

Can Wowza Video send a prerecorded playlist to YouTube?
Do not assume that a hosted player or embed is the same as delivery into YouTube Live. A Wowza Community response from Senior Technical Support Engineer Jason Hilton, dated July 10, 2025, said scheduled or playlist streaming of prerecorded video to platforms such as YouTube did not then exist in Wowza Video. He described combining clips into one MP4 as a limited workaround and pointed to Wowza Streaming Engine with a module for playlist support. This is a dated answer, not confirmation of the feature’s availability in 2026. Check current Wowza documentation or support before choosing it for that specific workflow.
The older Wowza Video file-loop documentation establishes looping a single hosted MP4 through a transcoder; it does not by itself establish scheduled playlists delivered to YouTube Live.

How the documented workflows differ
| Question | OBS Studio | Wowza Video |
|---|---|---|
| Where does the work run? | On your computer; the computer and network connection must be available while it encodes and sends. | In Wowza’s cloud transcoder and delivery service; the source file must be reachable from a web server or supported cloud storage. |
| What does the cited workflow loop? | The reviewed official OBS Media Sources page did not provide enough accessible detail to establish media-source loop controls or playlist reliability. | A single hosted H.264 MP4 in the legacy-documented transcoder workflow. The loop setting is an advanced property and is disabled by default. |
| Does it establish YouTube playlist delivery? | No specific OBS-to-YouTube prerecorded playlist procedure or reliability claim is established here. | No, not in the July 10, 2025 support answer; confirm current capability with Wowza. |
| How does ongoing operation affect cost? | The cited material does not establish a cost figure for OBS itself or the computer and connection used with it. | Wowza says a loop overrides idle timeout, so the transcoder continues running and accruing charges until stopped manually or by a schedule. Current plan pricing is not established here. |
What to consider before choosing
Choose a local OBS approach when you can keep the setup running
- You can leave the computer and internet connection available for the full stream.
- You want a local encoder workflow and will confirm the current OBS and YouTube settings for your chosen source and destination.
- You are prepared to manage unattended playback and recover the stream if the computer, network, or broadcast stops.
The cited material does not document OBS’s exact media-source loop controls, so do not treat a particular playlist setup or its reliability as verified here.
Consider Wowza Video when cloud transcoding is needed
- Your workflow needs Wowza’s cloud transcoder to receive, process and deliver a stream.
- You can host the source MP4 somewhere Wowza can access it, and account for file-download and transcoder startup time.
- You have confirmed that the current Wowza product supports your required destination and whether it can handle a playlist rather than one combined file.
Wowza’s OBS tutorial warns that charges accrue for started live streams even when they are not actively carrying content, and says to stop the stream when the event ends. Avoid leaving an unused stream or transcoder running.

Choose a purpose-built cloud loop for YouTube
For a YouTube-only channel that needs uploaded prerecorded videos to run continuously, compare a dedicated looping service rather than assuming either OBS or Wowza Video supplies the exact playlist feature you need. StreamNeo is #1 for this use case: it runs the loop from the cloud, accepts uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and gives the first day free.
If you test Wowza’s hosted-MP4 loop
Wowza’s legacy documentation describes this workflow, but it is not a confirmation that the service currently supports every YouTube destination or playlist requirement.

- Prepare the source: use an H.264-encoded MP4 and place it on a web server, Google Storage or Amazon S3 location that Wowza can access.
- Start the live stream or transcoder: Wowza downloads the source after startup. Delay depends on transcoder startup, file size, file location and network conditions.
- Enable looping: turn on the loop option in the transcoder’s advanced properties; it is disabled by default in the cited documentation.
- Allow for the handoff: Wowza recommends adding 10–15 seconds of buffer at the end of the file to reduce the risk of a premature cutoff.
- Plan scheduled starts conservatively: Wowza recommends allowing at least five minutes for startup and file download. This is guidance, not a guarantee; source location, file size and network conditions affect timing.
- Set a stop point or stop it yourself: the loop overrides idle timeout and keeps accruing charges while active. Wowza says a schedule can stop it at a specified time.
- Verify delivery at YouTube: confirm the current Wowza destination options and YouTube Live setup before relying on the stream. The cited file-loop instructions alone do not prove support for a YouTube playlist workflow.
Or let it run in the cloud
With StreamNeo, upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Your computer can be off because playback runs in the cloud. Each slot streams the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, with no re-encode or quality tiers; it includes 10 GB storage per slot, pooled across active slots, 24/7 looping and playlists, automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream, and support from the StreamNeo team. Common problems and fixes
- The source takes too long to appear: file download and transcoder startup time vary with file size, file location and network conditions. Start earlier than the intended broadcast time; Wowza recommends at least five minutes for scheduled starts, not as a guaranteed maximum.
- The file stops before the next loop: the legacy documentation recommends a 10–15 second end buffer to reduce premature cutoff. Check the file ending and loop configuration.
- The transcoder keeps running after you expect it to stop: looping overrides idle timeout. Stop it manually or configure a schedule to stop it.
- You expected a playlist to go to YouTube: the July 2025 support answer did not confirm that feature for Wowza Video. Verify current capabilities with Wowza; a single combined MP4 was described as a limited workaround, not playlist support.
- You started Wowza but see charges without content: its OBS tutorial warns that started live streams accrue charges even when not actively carrying content. Stop streams that are no longer needed.
YouTube rights and monetization still apply
A working loop does not grant permission to rebroadcast its contents. Use video, music and other material you own or are licensed to stream, and review YouTube’s current copyright and monetization rules before scheduling repeated prerecorded content. A technically continuous stream is not a guarantee of monetization eligibility.
