Give your holiday stream a coordinated look with four simple scenes—Starting Soon, Live, BRB, and Ending—then add a few seasonal details that suit your channel without covering gameplay, captions, or your webcam. Snowy backgrounds, twinkling lights, candy-cane accents, and audience activities can all work; the key is to keep the main content readable and use assets you have permission to stream.
Choose a holiday theme that still feels like your channel
Start with one visual direction, then use it consistently across your screens and overlays. A small set of repeated colors, shapes, and motifs usually feels more cohesive than putting every seasonal graphic on screen at once. Adapt the decorations to your usual channel palette so the holiday look feels like a seasonal version of your stream rather than a different brand.
Ideas for a gaming stream
- Snow-kissed forest: Use a calm winter-forest background for Starting Soon or BRB, with small snowflake accents around—not over—the gameplay area.
- Twinkling lights: Frame the webcam or scene edges with lights, keeping bright animation away from small text and game interfaces.
- Gingerbread workshop: Give a cozy or crafting game a gingerbread-house backdrop, cookie-shaped labels, or a themed webcam frame.
- Santa hats and candy canes: Treat these as small stickers or corner decorations rather than covering character faces, game HUD elements, or subtitles.
- Holiday frame: Put a seasonal frame around the webcam, and keep the frame separate from the background and any social bar so each can be adjusted independently.
These are visual prompts, not requirements. Pick only the elements that suit the game and the mood you want.
Build a four-scene visual set
A useful starting point is a scene collection with a screen for each transition in the broadcast. Streamlabs’ overlay guide describes Starting Soon, Live, and BRB scenes and adding image files as sources; an Ending scene completes the set.

Starting Soon
Use a festive background, a readable stream title, and a brief message that tells viewers when the gameplay begins. Keep motion subtle enough that the text remains easy to read.
Live
Make gameplay the visual priority. Add a webcam frame only if you use a camera, and place social handles in a bar at the top or bottom where they do not block important action. Leave room for captions and any game interface elements that sit near the edges.

BRB
Use a simpler version of the Starting Soon design so viewers can tell the stream is intentionally paused. A winter scene, a short return message, and restrained animation are usually enough.
Ending
Close with a brief thank-you and, if useful, a reminder of where viewers can find your next stream. Keep the same colors and seasonal motifs used in the other scenes.

Choose overlay files for your scene and output
Elgato’s OBS overlay guidance distinguishes static and animated transparent overlays and lists common output ratios. Choose for the actual canvas you stream, not just the dimensions of the graphic you downloaded.
| Need | Suggested choice | Check before adding it |
|---|---|---|
| Static decoration with transparent areas | PNG | Confirm the transparent parts reveal the game or scene underneath as intended. |
| Animated decoration with transparency | WEBM | Check that motion does not distract from gameplay or make labels difficult to read. |
| Camera in a non-rectangular shape | A mask file can keep the camera feed inside the intended shape. | Preview the crop so the frame does not cut off your face or important camera content. |
| Canvas or overlay layout | Match the actual output ratio: 16:9, 4:3, 9:16, or 1:1. | Check the layout in the intended orientation; an overlay designed for one ratio may not fit another. |
Keep decorative layers, webcam frames, and social bars as separate design elements where possible. That makes it easier to move or remove one without rebuilding the rest of the scene.

Add holiday overlays in Streamlabs or OBS
Streamlabs documents several ways to add overlays. Its instructions are vendor guidance and may change as software versions change, so the labels and available options in your installed version may differ.
- Choose your route: Browse and install an overlay from the Streamlabs library, import a
.overlayfile, or create scenes manually and add image files as sources. Streamlabs identifies holiday-themed collections as an available category. - Set up the scenes: Create a scene collection for the seasonal set and include Starting Soon, Live, BRB, and Ending scenes. Keep the design elements organized so each scene is easy to update.
- Place and size each asset: Fit the background to the canvas, then add frames, stickers, or bars as separate sources. Check that none covers gameplay, captions, the visible webcam area, or other essential information.
- Preview every transition: Switch between scenes and inspect the result at the output ratio you will use. Look for cropped edges, unreadable text, misplaced animation, or a webcam feed that does not sit correctly inside its frame.
- If you use OBS: Streamlabs documents adding its overlays through its OBS plugin or by importing scenes. You can also build scenes in OBS manually with image sources. Follow the current instructions for your installed software version.
Give the stream a seasonal activity, not just a seasonal frame
A decoration changes the look; a small planned segment gives viewers something to join in. OneStream Live’s holiday guide suggests activities such as these. They are idea prompts, not evidence that a particular tactic increases viewership.

- Ask chat about favorite holiday traditions, games, or seasonal memories.
- Use a poll to choose between two games, challenges, or decoration options.
- Consider a small giveaway only if you can explain its rules clearly and comply with the platform and local requirements that apply.
For a gaming-focused stream, these activities can be short intermissions or conversation prompts rather than a change to the whole broadcast. Keep the gameplay and chat readable while they are on screen.
Check asset rights before you go live
Use overlays, backgrounds, music, and other media only when you have the necessary rights. YouTube says it scans live streams for third-party content. If copyrighted content is identified, a placeholder may replace the stream, and continued use can lead to interruption or termination. YouTube also notes that a stream can be interrupted even when the creator has a license if the channel has not been added to the rights holder’s Content ID allowlist. This is YouTube-specific guidance, not a complete account of every platform’s rules.
Before using a downloaded holiday pack, check the license for live-stream use and whether it permits commercial use if you monetize. A file being available to download does not by itself establish that you may broadcast it.
Or let a prerecorded holiday stream run in the cloud
If your plan is a prerecorded holiday video loop on YouTube—not interactive live gameplay or a camera broadcast—StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping an uploaded video or playlist live. Upload the recording, add your YouTube stream key, and go live; the computer at home does not need to stay on. Each slot supports uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price, automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream, and 10 GB of storage per slot, pooled across active slots. The first day is free with no card. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. It streams to YouTube and plays uploaded videos; it does not broadcast live camera or gameplay.
