How to Use a Google Cloud VM for an Always-On Prerecorded YouTube Stream

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A Google Cloud Compute Engine VM can host an encoder that sends a prerecorded video to YouTube Live while your personal computer is off. You must still configure the encoder to read and repeat the file, provide a YouTube Live event and stream key, and monitor the VM, network, and stream. Google documents VM creation and YouTube’s encoder workflow separately; its guidance does not provide a verified end-to-end command for looping a video on a VM.

Before you create a VM: check YouTube Live eligibility

Confirm that the channel is verified and has had no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. These are YouTube’s stated eligibility requirements for live streaming; check the channel before paying for cloud resources. YouTube Help: Get started with live streaming.

What the VM does—and what you still need to configure

The VM is a cloud-hosted computer. It can run streaming encoder software and send its output to YouTube. It does not turn a video file into a live stream automatically, and YouTube does not loop the source file for you. You need to make the file accessible to the encoder and configure the software to play or repeat it.

The exact encoder, looping method, and VM size depend on the video, resolution, frame rate, and encoding approach. Google’s VM and YouTube’s encoder documentation do not establish a tested machine configuration or a universal looping command for this use case. Avoid choosing a size based on an assumed benchmark: estimate the workload for your settings and verify that the VM can sustain both encoding and outbound streaming.

  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Set up the always-on stream

  1. Create and start a Compute Engine VM. Follow Google’s instructions for creating and starting an instance. Choose a region and machine configuration for the encoder workload. Outbound bandwidth limits depend on machine type and configuration, so check the applicable limits before relying on a continuous stream. Google Cloud: Network bandwidth.
  2. Make the prerecorded video available. Place it where your chosen encoder can read it, whether on the VM or through a storage arrangement you have configured. Confirm access and sufficient storage before starting the stream. The reviewed Google and YouTube guidance does not prescribe a storage method.
  3. Create or prepare a YouTube Live event and obtain its stream key. Use YouTube’s encoder workflow to configure the event and encoder. Keep the key private; anyone with access to it may be able to send a feed to that event. YouTube’s guide explains the encoder setup and preview process: Stream using an encoder.
  4. Configure the encoder and send the feed over RTMPS. YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension to RTMP. Its current encoder guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS transport; H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant-bitrate encoding; and frame rates up to 60 fps. Choose the resolution and bitrate appropriate for the intended quality and confirm the VM can sustain them. YouTube Help: Encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
  5. Set the keyframe interval. YouTube recommends a two-second interval and says it should not exceed four seconds. Apply the setting in the encoder rather than assuming it is correct by default.
  6. Configure repetition in the encoder. Set up the chosen software to repeat the video as needed and verify the transition at the end of a playthrough. YouTube’s encoder documentation does not provide a loop command, so use the instructions for the encoder you select rather than copying an unverified command.
  7. Test before relying on the stream. Start the encoder, confirm the event is accessible, and check the Live Control Room preview and stream health. YouTube recommends testing in advance and monitoring audio and video quality. Listen and watch for missing audio, frozen or blank video, and interruptions before treating the setup as ready for an extended broadcast.

Keep the stream operating

An always-on broadcast depends on more than the VM existing: the VM must remain available, the encoder process must keep running, the video must remain accessible, the network must sustain the feed, and the YouTube event must remain healthy. The reviewed documentation does not promise uninterrupted availability or prescribe a particular process supervisor, restart policy, or failover design.

  • Monitor the Live Control Room and the encoder’s audio and video output.
  • Decide how you will detect and respond to an encoder exit, file-access failure, VM interruption, or dropped connection.
  • Test the recovery behavior you configure; do not assume that a process restart or reconnect will restore the stream correctly without checking the event preview.

Estimate the cost before leaving it on

Google Cloud charges depend on the VM, storage, networking, region, and usage. Use Google’s pricing calculator with the actual configuration, including VM runtime, disk, and outbound traffic. A continuously running encoder should not be assumed to be free.

As listed on Google Cloud’s current Compute Engine product page when checked in 2026, the free tier includes one e2-micro VM, up to 30 GB of standard persistent disk, and up to 1 GB of monthly outbound transfer. Google’s current Free Program documentation describes $300 in trial credit for eligible new users, valid for 90 days. These offers have eligibility and usage conditions; they do not predict the bill for a 24/7 stream. Trial resources stop when the trial billing account closes unless it is upgraded, and free-tier monthly limits still apply on a paid billing account. Check the terms and current limits for your account and region. Google Cloud Free Program.

For a rough traffic estimate, multiply the encoded bitrate by the hours streamed. For example, a bitrate expressed in bits per second multiplied by stream duration gives the approximate encoded data volume before protocol overhead. This is a planning calculation, not a Google or YouTube traffic quote. Also confirm that the selected VM’s outbound bandwidth limit can support the chosen bitrate continuously.

Troubleshooting common failures

  • YouTube will not let the channel go live: check channel verification and whether a live-streaming restriction applies within the preceding 90 days.
  • The event does not receive a feed: confirm the encoder is running, the event and stream key match, and the encoder is configured for a YouTube-supported transport and settings. If the key may have been exposed, replace it in YouTube and update the encoder.
  • The preview is unstable or reports stream problems: compare the encoder’s bitrate and frame rate with YouTube’s recommendations, then check whether the VM and its network configuration can sustain the feed. Reduce the chosen quality if the available capacity cannot support it.
  • The video stops at the end: verify the encoder’s repeat or playlist behavior. A VM alone does not make a file loop.
  • The stream is live but has no sound or picture: inspect the source file, encoder audio/video settings, and Live Control Room preview. YouTube recommends monitoring both audio and video, rather than judging the stream solely by the encoder’s running status.
  • The stream drops after a period of time: check VM availability, encoder process status, file access, network capacity, and YouTube event health. The reviewed documentation does not guarantee uptime or define an automatic recovery setup for this particular workflow.

Check rights and YouTube policy before broadcasting

Having a video file does not by itself establish that you have the rights to stream its contents. Confirm that you have permission for the video, music, and any other material in it, and review YouTube’s live-streaming and monetization rules for your channel and content. A continuous prerecorded stream is still subject to applicable copyright and platform policies; cloud hosting does not change those obligations.
