To run a 24/7 YouTube stream with OBS, keep a computer encoding continuously, give it a stable wired connection with enough upload capacity, and keep the computer and networking equipment powered. Start with a conservative bitrate, test during the hours you plan to stream, and monitor YouTube’s stream health and OBS’s dropped-frame statistics. An advertised broadband download speed—or even a single good speed test—cannot guarantee an uninterrupted broadcast.
What a 24/7 OBS stream requires
OBS sends your video to YouTube continuously. The computer must stay on and encode the stream; the internet connection must sustain outbound traffic to YouTube’s ingest server; and the modem or router and computer need power. If any of these fails, the stream can be interrupted.
For Indian broadband, assess the plan’s typical upload speed and fair-use policy (FUP), not just its headline download speed or an “unlimited” label. TRAI says it does not prescribe a minimum download or upload speed; providers must state typical speeds and FUP terms. Use the TRAI MySpeed app or portal to check performance, and test from the computer and connection you intend to use. TRAI Broadband FAQs
Choose a profile that your connection can sustain
YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends the following video bitrates for H.264. These are recommended video bitrates, not proof that a particular broadband connection will hold them around the clock. YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance

| Profile | YouTube-recommended H.264 video bitrate | When it may suit |
|---|---|---|
| 720p30 | 3 Mbps | A reasonable first trial when upload varies or reliability matters more than fine detail. |
| 1080p30 | 5 Mbps | More detail if your connection has stable upload headroom. |
| 1080p60 | 6 Mbps | For motion that benefits from 60 fps, provided the connection and computer can sustain it. |
| 720p60 | 8 Mbps | More frames per second, but it requires a higher recommended bitrate than 720p30. |
Choose by the connection’s sustained upload and the level of detail your content needs. A lower-resolution profile is a sensible reliability-first test if upload fluctuates. OBS suggests starting at no more than 75% of total upload speed when troubleshooting; treat that as a rule of thumb, not a guarantee. Leave headroom for network variation and other household traffic rather than setting the stream to consume all measured upload. OBS connection troubleshooting
Set up OBS and YouTube
- Check YouTube access and stream setup. In YouTube Studio, open the live-stream setup and obtain the stream key for the broadcast. Keep the key private: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a stream to your channel. Enter it in OBS’s YouTube streaming configuration, and do not publish or share it.
- Connect the computer by Ethernet if practical. Connect it to the modem or router with a network cable. OBS warns that Wi-Fi may be unstable for streaming and recommends a wired connection. Ethernet reduces reliance on wireless; it cannot fix an unstable route to YouTube or an ISP outage. OBS connection troubleshooting
- Select a video profile. In OBS, open Settings > Video and choose the output resolution and frame rate you intend to broadcast, such as 1280 × 720 at 30 fps for a 720p30 trial. Match the YouTube bitrate recommendation to the chosen resolution and frame rate.
- Configure the output encoder. In Settings > Output, use an H.264 encoder and set rate control to CBR (constant bitrate). Set the video bitrate to the selected profile’s recommended value only if your tested, stable upload can sustain it with headroom. YouTube’s current guidance also covers H.265/HEVC and AV1; consult its codec-specific settings if you use one of those instead of this straightforward H.264 setup.
- Set keyframes and protocol. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says it should not exceed four seconds. Use RTMP or RTMPS as supported by your YouTube and OBS setup. Check YouTube’s current encoder guidance for other codec-specific requirements.
- Prepare audio and content. Confirm that OBS is capturing the intended audio sources and that levels are audible without clipping. For a pre-recorded or looping broadcast, confirm the media source or playlist behaves as intended before starting a long session.
- Start a realistic test before the broadcast. YouTube advises testing with audio and movement similar to the intended stream. Start the stream and inspect the Live Control Room’s stream-health notices; in OBS, check network-dropped-frame statistics. Keep the test running long enough to reveal fluctuations, and repeat it during the hours the 24/7 stream will operate.
Check broadband and household limits before going live
Measure at the right time and place
Run upload tests from the streaming computer, on the connection it will actually use, preferably during likely stream hours and while normal household devices are active. A speed test is a snapshot; it does not establish that the route to YouTube’s ingest server will remain stable continuously. Compare results with the provider’s stated typical upload speed and check the plan terms for its FUP threshold and any post-limit speed reduction.

Check FUP and local availability
TRAI says providers must state FUP terms. Its FAQ says that after an unlimited plan’s fair-use limit is exhausted, speed is reduced and the provider must state the limit and reduced speed. Airtel’s broadband terms give one provider-specific example: 3333 GB in a billing cycle followed by reduction to 1 Mbps. Airtel also says FUP may be amended and availability depends on network feasibility at the address, so verify current terms for the exact plan and location rather than treating that example as a general Indian broadband rule. Airtel broadband terms and conditions
Choose wired or wireless deliberately
Ethernet is preferable for diagnosis and long-running stability when the router is accessible. Wi-Fi may be more convenient, but it adds another possible source of fluctuation. If you test over Wi-Fi and see drops, repeat the test over Ethernet before concluding the broadband line itself is at fault.

Power and outage planning
A UPS connected to the computer and modem/router may bridge some short power interruptions. Required capacity and runtime depend on the equipment load and battery, so calculate for your own setup. A UPS will not keep a broadcast online through an ISP outage, local fiber fault, or wider network interruption. No power backup can guarantee uninterrupted transmission.
For a 24/7 local OBS setup, plan for recovery as well as prevention: keep OBS and the media source ready to restart, secure the stream key, and know how to check YouTube stream health after a disconnection. Monitor the broadcast rather than assuming that an initial successful test proves the connection will remain stable.

Troubleshoot dropped frames and stream-health warnings
OBS reports network-dropped frames or disconnects
OBS describes dropped frames as a sign of an unstable connection to the remote server or inability to sustain the selected bitrate. Lower the bitrate, then retest. If an alternate ingest server is available, trying it may help distinguish a route-specific problem. OBS notes that network problems are typically outside OBS itself. OBS connection troubleshooting
Drops occur on Wi-Fi
Connect by Ethernet and test again. Also inspect the network cable, modem/router status, and network drivers. If the wired connection still drops, Wi-Fi was not the only possible cause; check the route and connection with your ISP.

YouTube says incoming video is insufficient or unhealthy
Read the specific Live Control Room warning and check the configured bitrate, codec, and keyframe interval. YouTube’s health diagnostics include high or low bitrate, unsupported codec, excessively long keyframe interval, and “video ingestion starved.” Match the OBS configuration to YouTube’s encoder requirements and retest. YouTube Live Streaming API health-status messages
A speed test looks fine, but the stream still drops
A speed test does not test continuous delivery to YouTube’s ingest server. Check OBS dropped-frame statistics and YouTube’s health messages, reduce bitrate, and compare results over Ethernet and at different times. Avoid attributing the fault to the ISP without those checks; congestion, local equipment, software, or the route to the ingest server may be involved.
Interruptions continue after checking OBS settings
Inspect router and modem status, cables, network drivers, VPN or security software, and possible route congestion. Note the time of each interruption and the exact OBS or YouTube health message, then contact the ISP with those details if local checks do not resolve it. OBS identifies unexpected congestion or ISP-side changes as possible causes. OBS connection troubleshooting
