To loop multiple videos into a YouTube Live stream on Windows, install VLC with the same architecture as OBS, add an OBS VLC Video source to a scene, load your files into its playlist, and leave Loop Playlist enabled. Then connect OBS to a YouTube encoder stream with its server URL and stream key, check the preview in Live Control Room, and click Go live.
Before you set up the playlist
- Your YouTube channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it well before your planned stream. YouTube also says users must be at least 16 to live stream. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
- Install OBS and VLC. OBS’s VLC Video source depends on VLC libraries; for 64-bit OBS, OBS specifically requires 64-bit VLC. The VLC Video source is documented for Windows in the OBS Media Sources guide.
- Prepare local media files you have permission to broadcast. The technical setup does not grant rights to music, game footage, films, or other third-party material.
Create a looping VLC playlist in OBS
- Open the scene you want to stream. In OBS, select an existing scene or create one in the Scenes panel.
- Add the VLC source. In Sources, select +, choose VLC Video, and create or select a source. If VLC Video is missing, confirm VLC is installed and its architecture matches OBS.
- Add the media files. In the source properties, add the video files to the playlist. Arrange them in the order you want. OBS’s Shuffle option is off by default, so the list plays in order unless you turn it on.
- Enable looping. Leave Loop Playlist checked. OBS restarts the playlist after its final item finishes.
- Check source visibility behavior. OBS documents the default as stopping playback when the source is not visible and restarting when it becomes visible. If you switch scenes, ensure the VLC source is not unintentionally hidden for long periods; verify the result in your installed OBS version.
- Preview the scene. Confirm the video fits the canvas and that its audio reaches the OBS mixer. Play through transitions between playlist items rather than checking only the first file.
OBS describes VLC Video as an alternative to its built-in Media Source for extended media support and for playlists. Its Media Sources guide lists formats for Media Sources, but does not give a separate VLC-specific format list; do not assume every listed format works with every VLC installation. For one file rather than a sequence, OBS Media Source has its own loop setting.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- Open Live Control Room. In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live, then create a stream or select a scheduled one. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
- Copy the server URL and stream key. In OBS, open Settings → Stream, choose YouTube if offered, and enter the server URL and stream key shown for the YouTube stream. If OBS offers account connection instead, use the applicable current YouTube integration flow. Treat the key like a password: it authorizes an encoder to send a feed to your stream. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room.
- Start the encoder and inspect the preview. Select Start Streaming in OBS and wait for the feed to appear in Live Control Room. Check both picture and sound, and verify stream accessibility and event settings before broadcasting.
- Go live from YouTube. Once the preview is correct, select Go live in Live Control Room. When finished, end the stream in YouTube and stop the OBS encoder. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived.
Choose a suitable connection and protocol
For a normal playlist loop, use the standard encoder workflow with YouTube’s server URL and stream key. YouTube recommends that available upload bandwidth exceed the stream’s total bitrate by 20%; this headroom helps avoid saturating the connection. Test the actual scene and full playlist ahead of time, especially if the stream will run unattended.
HLS is not required to loop files. YouTube documents HLS for compatible scenarios such as HDR or codecs unsupported by RTMP, and notes that HLS has higher latency because it sends segments rather than a continuous RTMP stream. If you have a specific HLS requirement, follow YouTube’s HLS setup requirements: TS segments of 1–4 seconds, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, HTTPS POST/PUT, and no byte ranges or encryption beyond HTTPS. OBS is among the encoders YouTube lists as supporting HLS output.

Rights and YouTube policy checks
Check that you have the necessary rights and permissions for every item in the playlist, including music and game footage. A file playing successfully in OBS does not establish that you may broadcast it. Follow YouTube’s applicable copyright and platform rules; the technical setup guidance does not grant a license or determine whether a particular use is permitted.
Troubleshooting
- VLC Video is not available in the Sources menu: Install VLC and match its architecture to OBS. In particular, OBS requires 64-bit VLC with 64-bit OBS.
- The playlist stops after the last item: Open the VLC source properties and check Loop Playlist.
- The order changes unexpectedly: Turn off Shuffle if you need the files to play in list order.
- Playback stops after changing scenes: Check whether the VLC source is hidden. Its documented default behavior is to stop while not visible and restart when visible.
- YouTube shows no incoming video: Confirm OBS is sending to the correct server URL and stream key for the selected stream, start the encoder, and wait for the Live Control Room preview. Reset an exposed key.
- The preview buffers or the connection struggles: Check that total stream bitrate fits within your available upload bandwidth, preserving YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. Test the setup before the scheduled start.
- A media file will not play: Confirm it opens in your VLC installation and try a compatible file. OBS’s documentation does not enumerate a VLC-specific supported-format list, so support can depend on the installed software and file.
Or let it run in the cloud
