How to Stream a 24/7 Fireplace Ambience Video on YouTube with FFmpeg

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You can loop a prepared fireplace video into a YouTube live stream with FFmpeg by placing -stream_loop -1 before the input file’s -i option, then sending the output to the server URL and stream key from YouTube Studio. That loop repeats the file; it does not restart FFmpeg after a crash, bring a computer back after a reboot, or guarantee an uninterrupted broadcast. A genuine unattended stream also needs a reliable machine and connection, process supervision, monitoring, and a plan for YouTube interruptions.

What you need before starting

  • A fireplace video and audio track that you own or have permission to use in a YouTube live stream. Keep license records and check whether the rights holder must allowlist your channel in Content ID.
  • A YouTube channel eligible to live stream. YouTube’s current guidance requires channel verification and no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days; the person streaming must be at least 16. First-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours.
  • A computer or server that can run your installed FFmpeg build, a stable internet connection with enough upload capacity for the chosen output, and a way to keep FFmpeg running.
  • The stream server URL and stream key from YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Treat the key like a password: do not put it in a public command, screenshot, log, or repository.

Prepare the YouTube stream

  1. Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room. Create or schedule a stream using the encoder workflow.
  2. Copy the server URL and stream key shown for that stream. Use the exact values YouTube provides; do not assume a server address or reuse a key you have not confirmed is appropriate for this broadcast.
  3. Choose the intended visibility and audience settings. Keep the stream private or unlisted while testing if you do not want viewers to see the test.
  4. Remember that a stream key grants access to your broadcast. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in Studio and update the encoder configuration.

Choose compatible FFmpeg output settings

YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and no more than four seconds between keyframes. It recommends RTMPS, which encrypts stream data into and through Google’s servers. YouTube lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 video codecs and AAC or MP3 audio, but codec combinations depend on the ingest protocol and encoder. H.264 video with AAC audio is a conventional compatibility choice when supported by your FFmpeg build and ingest route.

  • Resolution and bitrate: Select an output resolution suited to the source and a bitrate your sustained upload connection can carry. Leave headroom for normal network variation; a nominal speed test result is not the same as stable continuous upload capacity.
  • Keyframes: Set a two-second interval if your chosen encoder options allow it, and do not exceed four seconds.
  • Rate control: Configure CBR for the video output as YouTube recommends. The appropriate bitrate depends on resolution, motion, and available upload capacity; there is no single safe value for every connection.
  • Audio: Ensure the stream has an audio track if the fireplace recording includes sound. Choose a YouTube-listed audio codec supported by your FFmpeg build and protocol.
  • Source versus re-encoding: Inspect the input codecs and your FFmpeg build before choosing stream copy or transcoding. Copying may not meet the selected output requirements; transcoding uses CPU or GPU capacity and must be tested at the intended resolution and bitrate.

Set up the FFmpeg loop

The essential loop syntax is -stream_loop -1 before the relevant input’s -i. FFmpeg defines loop value -1 as an infinite loop. Use -re where appropriate to read a file at its native playback rate rather than sending it as fast as possible.

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i "fireplace-video.mp4" -f flv "[YouTube ingest URL]/[stream key]"

This is a command structure, not a ready-to-run command: the output options, URL format, and supported protocol depend on your input, FFmpeg build, and the ingest details supplied by YouTube Studio. Replace the bracketed portions, configure compatible codecs and CBR, set the keyframe interval, and use the RTMPS endpoint when your workflow supports it. Do not publish a command containing a real stream key. Validate syntax and protocol support for your installed FFmpeg version before relying on it.

Because a loop restarts the input rather than creating new footage, viewers will see the recording begin again at its end. For a less noticeable transition, prepare the file so its ending and beginning are visually and audibly compatible. This does not change YouTube’s copyright or reused-content rules.

Test before making the stream public

  1. Start FFmpeg with the stream still private or unlisted, and check that it connects to the intended Studio stream.
  2. Watch the Live Control Room preview. Confirm that the image is moving as expected, the audio is present and at a sensible level, and the video is not frozen, distorted, or badly out of sync.
  3. Review YouTube’s stream-health feedback while the stream is active. Test representative motion and audio, not only a static frame or a silent section.
  4. Let playback run through at least one file boundary to confirm the loop behaves as expected. Check the logs and resource use on the machine during playback.
  5. Only after the test succeeds, change the stream’s visibility or audience access to the intended setting.

Make it unattended: supervise more than the loop

-stream_loop -1 only tells FFmpeg to repeat the input. It does not supervise a crashed process, recover a machine after a reboot, ensure continuous connectivity or power, or prove 24/7 uptime. For unattended operation, configure a service manager or equivalent supervisor for your operating system, with suitable restart behavior, logs, and alerts. The exact configuration depends on the OS and installed FFmpeg version; verify those details for your system rather than relying on a generic service file.

Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
  • Process failure: Configure and test a supervisor’s restart behavior. Confirm that the process restarts after an intentional stop or crash and that its logs explain failures.
  • Machine restart: Arrange for the supervisor and stream process to start after a planned reboot, then test that behavior. A process restart policy alone may not enable automatic startup after a system reboot.
  • Network or ingest interruption: Monitor both FFmpeg and YouTube’s stream health. Recovery behavior depends on the encoder workflow and YouTube connection state; test how your setup behaves rather than assuming reconnects are automatic.
  • Alerts: Set up a way to notice when the process exits, the machine goes offline, or the stream-health state changes. A process that restarts repeatedly can still leave the channel without a working broadcast.

A home computer uses hardware you may already own, but it depends on that machine staying powered, connected, and available. A hosted server can avoid relying on your home PC and connection, but compare its ongoing hosting and outbound-bandwidth costs, continuous-media terms, logging and restart controls, and recovery process before choosing one. No particular provider or price is established here.

Copyright, live-stream rules, and the archive

Use only footage and audio you have the rights to broadcast live on YouTube. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. A stream can be replaced with a placeholder, trigger a warning, be interrupted or terminated, and may be terminated for copyright or Community Guidelines strikes. A license does not necessarily prevent an interruption: the rights holder may need to allowlist your channel through Content ID. Confirm that requirement before going live.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not establish that a continuous 24-hour broadcast will be archived in full or preserved as one recording. Treat the live broadcast and the replay archive as separate needs; make separate recordings if you need a dependable local copy.

Troubleshoot common failures

Symptom Likely area to check What to do
FFmpeg cannot connect or YouTube shows no incoming stream Server URL, stream key, protocol support, or channel activation Copy the current URL and key from the correct Studio stream, check that the key is private and correctly configured, verify RTMPS support in your workflow, and confirm live streaming is enabled for the channel.
Stream connects but YouTube reports poor health Bitrate, upload stability, output settings, or encoder capacity Review stream-health feedback, lower the output demand if the connection cannot sustain it, and check whether the machine can encode the selected resolution in real time.
Video or audio is missing, incompatible, or out of sync Input tracks, output codecs, FFmpeg build, or transcoding choice Inspect the source and build, confirm the intended audio and video streams are mapped, and test a compatible codec and protocol combination before going public.
The video plays once and stops Loop option placement Put -stream_loop -1 before the input’s -i; input options apply to the input that follows them.
The stream stops after FFmpeg exits No process supervisor or restart policy Configure and test OS-appropriate supervision, logging, and alerts. A loop option cannot restart a terminated FFmpeg process.
Live stream is interrupted despite having a license Content ID allowlisting or another rights/policy issue Check the warning in Studio and contact the rights holder about channel allowlisting where needed; verify all footage and audio rights and applicable YouTube rules.
