Short answer: if your DigitalOcean Droplet will encode or transcode video continuously, use a dedicated-CPU plan as your starting point and benchmark your actual stream before relying on it. DigitalOcean’s currently listed 4-vCPU, 8-GiB CPU-Optimized Droplet—with 50 GiB SSD and 5,000 GiB of included transfer at $84 per month—is a useful reference configuration, not a tested guarantee for every encoder, resolution, or channel. If the Droplet only forwards already-encoded video, it may need less CPU, but you still need a sustained test and enough outbound transfer.
A Droplet’s vCPU count alone cannot promise a smooth 24/7 stream. The right size depends on whether you encode, transcode, or merely relay the video; your codec, resolution, frame rate, scene complexity, and number of streams; and the transfer allowance your chosen plan includes.
Choose the plan for the work the Droplet will do
The main sizing distinction is whether the VM has to create the outgoing video stream or simply send video that is already encoded. Encoding continuously calls for predictable CPU access; forwarding pre-encoded content is a different, usually lighter workload. In either case, validate the complete setup under sustained load rather than treating a plan specification as proof of performance.
For continuous encoding or transcoding
Start your evaluation with a dedicated-CPU Droplet. DigitalOcean says shared CPU access is not guaranteed at all times, while a dedicated-CPU Droplet guarantees access to its allocated hyper-thread. Its plan-selection guide recommends benchmarking and load testing before settling on a Droplet type. The 4-vCPU CPU-Optimized configuration below is a defensible workload baseline, not a promise that a particular stream will run smoothly.

| CPU-Optimized configuration | Memory | SSD | Included transfer | Listed monthly price | How to use it as a starting point |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2 vCPUs | 4 GiB | not stated in the cited pricing details | 4,000 GiB | $42 per month | Lower-cost test size; do not assume it reliably handles a particular stream without testing. |
| 4 vCPUs | 8 GiB | 50 GiB | 5,000 GiB | $84 per month | Reference point for evaluating continuous software encoding or transcoding. |
| 8 vCPUs | 16 GiB | not stated in the cited pricing details | 6,000 GiB | $168 per month | Larger listed option to evaluate if measurements show the workload needs more resources. |
These are DigitalOcean’s listed CPU-Optimized configurations and prices accessed on October 3, 2026; pricing and plan details can change. DigitalOcean describes CPU-Optimized Droplets as dedicated-CPU configurations suited to consistent-performance workloads, including media streaming. The figures do not establish capacity for a specific encoding workload.
For forwarding or remuxing pre-encoded video
A smaller Droplet may be sufficient when it does not re-encode the video, but no universal minimum is established here. Start conservatively, send a sustained test stream, and check CPU, memory, and outbound transfer. A relay that unexpectedly decodes or transcodes the video has a different compute profile from one that forwards the original encoded stream.

For higher resolutions, frame rates, or complex scenes
Expect more demand than for a simple forwarding stream or low-motion encoding job, but measure before paying for a larger plan. OBS says CPU requirements vary with the encoder, resolution, FPS, and scene complexity; passing minimum system requirements does not guarantee streaming capability. Run OBS’s Auto Configuration Wizard as a starting point, then test your intended scene and output settings.
Check the transfer allowance before going live
Continuous streaming consumes outbound data. A simple estimate is bitrate × seconds streamed, converted to bytes; it excludes protocol overhead, restarts, and other outbound traffic, so actual usage can differ.

| Constant bitrate | Estimated transfer over 30 days | Basis |
|---|---|---|
| 5 Mbps | About 1.62 decimal TB, or 1,508 GiB | Arithmetic estimate at a constant bitrate for 30 days. |
| 10 Mbps | About 3.24 decimal TB, or 3,017 GiB | Arithmetic estimate at a constant bitrate for 30 days. |
Compare your estimate with the allowance on the exact plan you select and review DigitalOcean’s current overage terms. For context, the cited 4-vCPU CPU-Optimized example includes 5,000 GiB of transfer. That allowance is separate from a Droplet’s network throughput limit: DigitalOcean documents limits of up to 2 Gbps for non-Premium, non-GPU Droplets and 10 Gbps for Premium CPU Droplets. Neither figure is a monthly transfer allowance or a guarantee of stream uptime.
Set the encoder and YouTube ingest deliberately
YouTube’s encoder settings guidance, accessed October 3, 2026, lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest and H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video codecs. YouTube recommends RTMPS to encrypt stream data in transit to and through Google’s servers. Use a codec supported by your encoder and workflow, and configure the output against YouTube’s current settings rather than applying a single bitrate to every resolution.

H.264 reference settings
| YouTube output | Recommended H.264 bitrate |
|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s recommended H.264 values for the listed output modes, not universal settings for H.265 or AV1. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, with an interval no longer than four seconds. Its guidance also recommends testing upload bitrate; the actual encoder output and YouTube stream-health status are what matter during operation.
Protect the stream key
Use the stream key provided in YouTube Studio for the intended broadcast, and enter it only in the encoder or relay that needs it. Treat it as a credential: do not publish it in a command, screenshot, public configuration file, or support post. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio before continuing. Exact interface labels can change, so follow the current live-stream setup in your channel’s YouTube Studio.

Benchmark the actual stream before relying on it
- Fix the workload. Decide whether the Droplet encodes, transcodes, or forwards pre-encoded media, and define the target codec, resolution, frame rate, number of concurrent streams, audio, and scene complexity.
- Estimate transfer. Use the target bitrate and the intended billing period to estimate outbound data, then compare it with the plan’s included transfer and current overage terms.
- Run a representative test. Stream the actual type of content—with motion and audio—for long enough to reveal sustained resource pressure, not just a brief startup success. YouTube recommends checking stream health and testing audio and movement.
- Watch the resource graphs. DigitalOcean’s monitoring guidance covers CPU, memory, disk, and bandwidth. Check those during the test, as well as YouTube’s stream-health indicators and any encoder-reported dropped frames.
- Adjust based on evidence. If CPU demand is unstable on shared CPU, evaluate dedicated CPU. If the selected configuration is constrained under the target workload, resize and repeat the test. Do not buy a larger Droplet solely because a higher resolution sounds demanding; use observed behavior.
Hardware encoders can reduce CPU work by moving encoding to specialized GPU hardware, according to OBS. That does not establish that a particular DigitalOcean instance exposes a usable hardware encoder. Verify the selected instance, driver, and software environment before designing around NVENC or another hardware encoder.
Common problems and what to check
- Stream starts but drops frames under load: check CPU use, encoder settings, and whether the VM is encoding or transcoding unexpectedly. Test the target resolution and frame rate; consider a dedicated-CPU plan or a different workflow if measurements show a CPU bottleneck.
- YouTube reports poor stream health: verify the ingest protocol, codec, bitrate, CBR setting, and two-second keyframe interval. Test upload bitrate and inspect the encoder’s actual output rather than assuming the configured target is being delivered.
- The stream stops after running for a while: inspect the Droplet’s resource and bandwidth graphs, encoder or relay logs, and YouTube stream-health status. A plan’s transfer allowance and compute capacity are separate checks; the plan itself does not guarantee availability.
- Audio or motion is missing or wrong: make a representative test that includes both, as YouTube advises, and check the source and encoder configuration before treating the issue as a Droplet-size problem.
- Stream key is rejected: confirm that the key belongs to the intended YouTube broadcast and has not been exposed, replaced, or mistyped. If exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio.
- CPU looks adequate but the stream still struggles: check the encoder, scene complexity, frame rate, and output settings. OBS cautions that minimum system requirements alone do not establish streaming capability.
Allow for content rights and YouTube rules
A Droplet only supplies the compute and network environment; it does not grant rights to the video or music being broadcast, establish channel eligibility, or ensure that a channel complies with YouTube policies. Confirm that you have the necessary rights for every recording and soundtrack, and review YouTube’s current copyright, live-streaming, and monetization rules for your channel and content. Continuous looping does not make copyrighted material permissible, and infrastructure sizing cannot resolve reused-content or eligibility issues.
