OBS Playlist Source for Continuous YouTube Streaming: Setup and Settings

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a repeating list of prerecorded videos in OBS, add a VLC Video source, load the files into its playlist, and enable Loop Playlist. VLC must be installed in the same 32- or 64-bit architecture as OBS. This repeats the media list; it does not keep OBS, your internet connection, or the YouTube broadcast alive if any of those stop.

Set up a looping playlist in OBS

  1. Install VLC to match OBS. OBS uses VLC libraries for its VLC Video source. If the source is missing, confirm VLC is installed and its architecture matches your OBS installation; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. See the OBS Media Sources documentation.
  2. Add the playlist source. In the OBS scene where the videos should appear, click the add-source button and choose VLC Video. Add the media files you want to play to that source’s playlist.
  3. Set playback order and looping. Turn on Loop Playlist to repeat the list when it reaches the end. It is on by default. Leave Shuffle Playlist off to play files in list order; it is off by default. Turn it on only if you want randomized playback.
  4. Choose visibility behavior. The documented default stops playback when the source is not visible and restarts it when visible. If you change scenes or hide the source, playback may therefore stop and restart. Review the source’s Visibility Behaviour setting and choose behavior that fits your scene workflow.
  5. Check audio before streaming. OBS documents Audio Track 1 as the default for VLC Video. Verify that the media files contain the audio you expect, then preview the playlist locally and listen at file transitions for silence, gaps, or unintended changes.
  6. Test the whole sequence. Preview a complete playlist boundary and any scene changes you expect to make while live. Confirm picture and audio continue as intended before starting a public broadcast.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live

  1. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select a stream. YouTube’s encoder setup guide explains the flow.
  2. Copy the stream key into OBS’s stream settings. Treat the key like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send video to your stream. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio.
  3. Set the output resolution, frame rate, and bitrate for your content and stable upload capacity. Use RTMPS for secure ingestion unless a specific workflow calls for something else.
  4. Preview the encoder feed in Live Control Room before making the stream public. Check YouTube’s stream-health information and continue monitoring audio and video while live.

YouTube recommends testing with representative motion and audio before an event. Its current encoder guidance covers supported codecs, bitrate recommendations, and other connection settings: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

Settings that affect playback and stream quality

Playlist order and hidden sources

  • Loop Playlist: On repeats the list after its last item; this is the documented default.
  • Shuffle Playlist: Off preserves list order; on randomizes the media sequence. Off is the documented default.
  • Visibility Behaviour: The documented default stops playback while the source is hidden and restarts it when visible. Account for this if scenes switch during a broadcast.
  • Network caching: OBS documents a 400 ms default for the VLC Video source. The documentation does not give one universally recommended custom value, so do not treat changing it as a guaranteed remedy for playback trouble.

Encoder settings and upload capacity

YouTube’s current guidance accessed on 2026-10-03 lists H.264 recommendations of 10 Mbps for 1080p30 and 17 Mbps for 1080p60. These are reference settings, not a promise that a particular internet connection can sustain them. Choose a bitrate your upload can hold steadily, test it with representative content, and reduce resolution or bitrate if YouTube reports unstable ingest.

YouTube’s guidance supports H.264, H.265, and AV1 over RTMP/RTMPS, recommends CBR, and recommends a 2-second keyframe interval that should not exceed 4 seconds. For the exact settings available to your encoder and stream type, consult YouTube’s current encoder settings.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

When HLS is relevant

HLS is not necessary for an ordinary looping playlist. Consider it only when a particular compatible codec or HDR workflow requires it. YouTube says HLS has higher latency than RTMP; its HLS setup specifies TS segments lasting 1–4 seconds, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, and HTTPS POST/PUT requests. See YouTube’s HLS setup guide.

Eligibility and YouTube live rules to check

  • Activation and eligibility: YouTube says first-time live streaming may take up to 24 hours to activate. Its current getting-started guidance requires a verified channel with no live-stream restriction in the prior 90 days and states a minimum age of 16. Check YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance before treating a blocked stream as an OBS problem.
  • Copyright: Use only video and audio you own or are authorized to stream. A playlist loop does not grant rights to music, gameplay footage, or other included material. Review YouTube’s live stream settings and policies and check the stream’s status in Live Control Room.
  • Reused content: Repeating prerecorded material does not by itself establish eligibility for monetization. YouTube evaluates channels under its monetization policies; review the current live stream settings and policies and applicable channel guidance rather than assuming a continuously running playlist qualifies.

Troubleshoot common playlist and stream problems

Symptom Likely cause What to check or do
VLC Video is not available in the source list VLC is missing or its architecture does not match OBS. Install VLC in the architecture matching OBS; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
Playback stops or starts over after a scene change The source became hidden and its visibility behavior stops playback while hidden. Review Visibility Behaviour on the VLC Video source and test the scene transition again.
The list reaches its end and does not repeat Looping may be disabled. Enable Loop Playlist and test through the last item into the next cycle.
One or more files are silent or transitions sound wrong The media may lack expected audio, the selected track may not be right, or the transition itself may contain a gap. Confirm the files’ audio, check the source’s audio track selection (Audio Track 1 is the documented default), and listen through the affected boundary in preview.
YouTube reports unstable ingest or poor stream health The upload connection may not sustain the selected bitrate, resolution, or frame rate. Check YouTube’s stream-health messages, test upload capacity, and lower bitrate or resolution as needed. Test with representative motion and audio.
The stream cannot be started or controlled as expected The channel may not yet be enabled for live streaming, may not meet eligibility requirements, or the stream key may be incorrect or exposed. Check channel eligibility and activation in YouTube Studio, confirm the selected stream and key, and reset the key if compromised.
