How to Use a USB SSD for an FFmpeg YouTube Loop Stream on Raspberry Pi

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Yes. A Raspberry Pi can read a video from a USB SSD and send it to YouTube Live with FFmpeg; the Pi’s operating system can remain on a microSD card. Mount the SSD, confirm the video’s path and readability, then put FFmpeg’s -stream_loop -1 before that file’s -i input. Use the stream URL and key from YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, and test the exact Pi, FFmpeg build, video, power supply and network before relying on it.

What you need—and what the SSD does

  • A Raspberry Pi and a working operating system, which may boot from a microSD card.
  • A USB SSD, enclosure and cable that work with the Pi model and provide sufficient power.
  • A video file the installed FFmpeg can read, and permission for the FFmpeg user to access it.
  • A YouTube channel with access to YouTube Live, an event or stream in Live Control Room, and a sustained internet upload connection suitable for the chosen video settings.
  • An FFmpeg build with the required input, video encoder, audio encoder and RTMPS output support.

The SSD can be media storage only; USB boot is optional. Raspberry Pi’s USB storage and boot guidance is model-dependent, so consult the current instructions for your exact model if you intend to boot from USB rather than use a microSD-based OS. See Raspberry Pi documentation on USB boot and USB mass-storage boot.

Connect and mount the SSD

  1. Connect the SSD and check that the operating system recognizes its filesystem. Mount it using the instructions appropriate to your Raspberry Pi OS version and filesystem; mount commands and supported filesystems vary, so do not assume one command fits every setup.
  2. Find the mounted directory and the video’s exact path. A path such as /mnt/ssd/loop-video.mp4 below is only an example—use the path on your Pi.
  3. Confirm that the account running FFmpeg can read the file. A desktop file manager may mount a drive for one logged-in user but not make it accessible to a service running as another user.
  4. For a setup that must survive restarts, arrange for the drive to mount reliably and verify the mount before starting FFmpeg. Avoid relying on a device name such as /dev/sda1 as a permanent identity; device enumeration can change after reconnects or reboot.

Raspberry Pi documentation cautions that USB disks and SSDs have power requirements. A single SSD does not automatically require an external supply, but disconnects, resets or undervoltage merit checking the Pi’s power and USB arrangement. More than one attached disk typically requires power from a powered enclosure or powered USB hub. See Raspberry Pi’s USB power guidance.

Create a YouTube Live stream and protect its key

  1. Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room. Create or select the live stream/event you intend to use.
  2. Copy the server/stream URL and stream key shown for that stream. Use the actual values provided there; the RTMPS address and key are not universal constants.
  3. Treat the key like a password. Do not put a real key in a public script, screenshot, shared command or article. Keep it out of shell history where practical, and regenerate it if it is exposed.
  4. Configure the stream’s latency and other Live Control Room options as needed, then monitor YouTube’s stream-health status during testing.

YouTube describes the stream key as the address and password for an encoder’s connection. Follow its current YouTube Live encoder setup instructions.

Loop the SSD video with FFmpeg

This schematic command shows the option placement and a conventional H.264/AAC-to-FLV shape. Replace the input path and the output placeholder with your own file and the URL/key provided by Live Control Room:

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i "/mnt/ssd/loop-video.mp4"
  -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v 3000k -maxrate 3000k -bufsize 6000k
  -pix_fmt yuv420p -g 60 -c:a aac -b:a 128k
  -f flv "rtmps://YOUR_YOUTUBE_INGEST_URL/YOUR_STREAM_KEY"
  • -stream_loop -1 asks FFmpeg to repeat that input indefinitely. It is an input option, so place it before the corresponding -i. If there are multiple inputs, put it before the input you want repeated.
  • -re reads input at its native rate, which is useful for real-time output in suitable workflows. Whether it belongs in a particular command depends on the source and output details; validate behavior rather than treating this example as universal.
  • -c:v libx264 selects the software H.264 encoder only if that encoder exists in your FFmpeg build. Available hardware acceleration and encoder options vary by Pi model and software image.
  • The example’s bitrate and keyframe values are illustrative, not a tested Raspberry Pi preset. Select settings for the source, Pi’s sustained encoding capacity, YouTube’s current ingest recommendations and your upload bandwidth.
  • -f flv is the output format commonly used for RTMP/RTMPS ingest. The FFmpeg build must include the needed protocol support. Check the installed build and its local help if an encoder or protocol is unavailable.

FFmpeg documents -stream_loop as an input option for looping an input, and describes -re as reading input at its native rate for real-time output use cases. Consult the FFmpeg documentation and protocol documentation for the installed version. The command above is a starting shape, not a verified configuration for every Raspberry Pi.

Choose YouTube-compatible output settings

YouTube’s H.264 guidance for RTMP/RTMPS recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, and says not to exceed four seconds. Its current recommendations, accessed in 2026, list these example H.264 targets:

Output YouTube recommended bitrate Keyframe guidance
720p at 30 fps 3 Mbps 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds
1080p at 30 fps 5 Mbps 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds

These are YouTube ingest recommendations, not proof that a specific Pi can encode those settings or that a particular internet connection can sustain them. In the example, -g 60 corresponds to 60 frames at 30 fps, or a two-second GOP; if your source frame rate differs, choose a GOP that produces the intended interval. Set a CBR-compatible bitrate configuration for your FFmpeg encoder and ensure the upload connection has sufficient sustained capacity. YouTube recommends RTMPS, its secure extension to RTMP. Check the latest YouTube encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions before going live, since platform guidance can change.

Test before leaving the stream running

  1. Start the stream with the actual media file, output settings, storage mount and internet connection you expect to use.
  2. In Live Control Room, confirm that YouTube receives the feed and reports healthy stream status. Check picture, sound, timing and any warnings.
  3. Observe the Pi’s CPU load and temperature, FFmpeg output, network stability and SSD mount for long enough to expose sustained-load or power problems. A short preview alone does not establish that a configuration will run reliably for an extended period.
  4. Check the transition where the video loops. Confirm the picture and audio behave acceptably at the end-to-start boundary.
  5. Only after the test, arrange a restart-safe launch process if needed. Ensure the SSD is mounted and the network is available before FFmpeg starts; otherwise the process can fail because the input path is absent or the ingest connection is not ready.

YouTube recommends testing with similar audio and movement to the intended stream and monitoring stream health and messages. A static or silent test may not reveal problems that appear with the real content.

Copyright, reused content and live-stream suitability

A technically valid loop is not automatically permitted or eligible for monetization. You are responsible for the rights to the video, music, images and other material in the file, including material licensed only for personal use or limited platforms. YouTube may restrict or interrupt streams over copyright or policy issues. Repeating the same recording does not itself establish that a channel meets YouTube’s monetization policies; assess the content and channel under YouTube’s current rules before using a loop as an ongoing format. Keep records of permissions and review claims or restrictions in Studio. For a practical preflight, use the copyright safety checklist.

Troubleshoot common failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check or change
FFmpeg reports that it cannot open the input The SSD is not mounted, the path is wrong, or the running user cannot read the file. Confirm the mount and exact filename, then check access as the same user that launches FFmpeg.
The drive disappears or the Pi reports resets or undervoltage USB power or connection instability. Check cable, enclosure and power requirements. For multiple disks, use a powered enclosure or hub as appropriate; do not assume every single SSD needs one.
“Unknown encoder” or encoder initialization errors The installed FFmpeg build lacks the selected encoder or its required support. Inspect the local FFmpeg version/build and available encoders; choose an encoder supported by that build and Pi. Recheck achievable output under sustained load.
FFmpeg rejects the RTMPS output or cannot connect Missing protocol support, incorrect ingest URL/key, network restrictions, or a stream not ready to accept the feed. Check the installed build’s protocol support, copy the current URL and key from Live Control Room, confirm outbound connectivity, and retry after the event is ready.
YouTube reports unstable or poor stream health Insufficient upload capacity, variable bitrate, overloaded encoding, unsuitable settings, or an unstable connection. Use YouTube’s current codec/bitrate/keyframe guidance; lower resolution or bitrate if needed, select settings the Pi can sustain, and retest with the real content.
Video works but audio is missing or breaks at the loop point The file has no usable audio stream, the selected audio encoder is unavailable, or the file’s boundary is abrupt. Inspect the input streams, verify the AAC encoder and output audio settings, and listen through a full loop before relying on it.
The stream stops after a restart The SSD mount or network was not ready when FFmpeg launched, or the process was not configured to restart. Make startup wait for the mount and network, verify the file path before launching, and monitor the process. FFmpeg does not by itself configure a restart policy.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you want the YouTube loop without keeping a Raspberry Pi or another computer running at home, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload the video, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It plays uploaded videos on YouTube, not a camera feed or streams to other platforms. Your computer can be off; it supports the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly service is $9.99 per month. Visit StreamNeo to compare details, then start the free day.
