Use OBS to send your video to YouTube, then configure the handoff in YouTube Studio: open Content > Live, edit the source stream, choose Customization > Redirect > Add, and select an eligible Premiere or livestream. When the source ends, YouTube can autoplay the destination for viewers.
What OBS does—and what YouTube Studio does
OBS is the encoder: it sends your video to YouTube using the server URL and stream key from YouTube’s Live Control Room. The redirect is a separate YouTube Studio setting on the source stream. Ending the OBS feed alone does not configure where viewers go next. YouTube’s encoder instructions explain the encoder connection; its Live Redirect help page covers the handoff.
Check eligibility and destination permissions
YouTube’s stated requirement for a creator sending a redirect is more than 1,000 subscribers and no Community Guideline strikes. Redirecting to another channel’s livestream also requires that channel’s permission. The destination must be an eligible upcoming or active livestream, or an upcoming Premiere.
The destination creator can manage incoming redirects in YouTube Studio > Settings > Community. YouTube lists three permission choices: channels the creator subscribes to, all channels, or specific approved channels. The specific-channel allow-list supports up to 100 channels and can be combined with the subscriptions option. Public subscription visibility can affect eligibility when the subscriptions option is used.

Set up the redirect in YouTube Studio
- Prepare the destination first. Create the Premiere or set up the livestream you want viewers to reach. YouTube recommends creating the Premiere before setting up the source livestream.
- Open the source stream. In YouTube Studio, select Content, then the Live tab.
- Edit its redirect settings. Hover over the source livestream, select Edit, then open Customization.
- Choose the destination. Under Redirect, select Add and choose the eligible Premiere or livestream.
- Confirm the handoff. When the source ends, YouTube shows a confirmation that viewers will be redirected.
You can also set a redirect for Premiere viewers using a similar Studio path. Exact interface details can vary with the stream setup and YouTube’s current Studio UI.
Connect and end the OBS stream cleanly
- In OBS, enter the YouTube Live server URL and stream key from Live Control Room, then start sending the stream. If OBS cannot connect, get the current key from Live Control Room and update OBS.
- Before the event, check the stream preview in Live Control Room and make sure YouTube shows the stream as ready.
- At the end, follow the ending steps for your stream type. YouTube describes ending an encoder stream as stopping the content sent from the encoder; for scheduled streams, its instructions also direct creators to click End Stream in Live Control Room and stop sending encoder content.
- After the event has stopped on YouTube, stop the encoder. Check YouTube’s stream-ending guidance and encoder tips if your setup’s controls differ.
Prepare viewers for the transition
YouTube autoplay moves viewers to the selected Premiere or livestream after the source ends. Tell the audience to wait briefly while their screens reload; YouTube gives an approximate two-second wait for a Premiere. You can also pin a message on the Premiere watch page directing viewers to the source livestream. If you want other creators to send viewers to your own livestream, allow incoming redirects in your channel’s Community settings.

Troubleshoot common problems
- The destination is missing: Confirm it is live or upcoming, or that the Premiere is upcoming. For another channel’s stream, ask its creator to check redirect permissions and, if using the subscriptions option, subscription visibility.
- OBS cannot start the stream: Retrieve the current stream key from Live Control Room and replace the one in OBS.
- The stream does not seem ready to end: Check the Live Control Room preview and status, then use the ending steps appropriate to the stream type.
- Viewers do not arrive immediately: The handoff involves their screens reloading. Tell them to wait a few seconds rather than refreshing or leaving at once.
Or let it run in the cloud
Live Redirect itself is configured in YouTube Studio, but if your goal is to keep a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos, StreamNeo can loop them from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for uploaded videos and YouTube streams, not camera broadcasting. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start your free day.
