YouTube can’t read MP4 files directly from your external drive or add them to a YouTube playlist. To broadcast those files as one live stream, connect the drive to a computer, play the videos in OBS Studio using its VLC Video source, and send OBS’s output to a YouTube Live event. Keep the drive connected throughout the broadcast.
How do I stream a playlist of local MP4 files to YouTube Live?
There are two different kinds of playlist here. A YouTube playlist contains videos hosted on YouTube. A playlist of MP4 files on your drive must be played by an encoder on your computer; YouTube receives the encoder’s live video and audio output, not the files themselves.
| What you want viewers to watch | Use this workflow | Important detail |
|---|---|---|
| A sequence of videos already hosted on YouTube | Create and share a YouTube playlist | It contains YouTube videos, not files stored only on your drive. Private videos require sharing permission for viewers. YouTube Help: Share playlists |
| Local MP4 files broadcast as one live output | Play the files in OBS with VLC Video, then stream OBS to YouTube | The drive and files must remain accessible to the computer. OBS Project: Media Sources |
Before you start
- Check channel eligibility. YouTube says the channel must be verified and must not have a live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days. Review the current requirements in YouTube Help: Get started with live streaming.
- Install OBS Studio and VLC. OBS’s VLC Video source requires VLC to be installed. For 64-bit OBS, OBS specifies 64-bit VLC. OBS Project: Media Sources
- Prepare the files. Connect and mount the external drive, arrange the MP4s in the intended order, and open each file to confirm it plays. Avoid moving or renaming them after adding them to OBS.
- Check rights and rules. Use video and audio you have permission to broadcast, and follow YouTube’s current copyright and live-stream policies. A live encoder does not make copyrighted or otherwise ineligible material permissible.
- Plan for a stable upload connection. YouTube recommends upload bandwidth with around 20% headroom above the total stream bitrate. This is an operational recommendation, not a guarantee against buffering. YouTube Help: Streaming tips
Set up OBS and the YouTube Live event
1. Create or schedule the live event
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Create > Go live to open Live Control Room.
- Create or schedule the event, then locate its stream settings. Use the event’s stream key and the connection details shown by YouTube in OBS. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance is in Get started with live streaming.
- Treat the stream key as a password: it lets an encoder send a feed to your channel. Do not put it in screenshots, public pages, messages, or article examples. If it is exposed, replace or reset it through YouTube’s stream settings.
2. Add the local-file playlist
- In OBS, select the scene you want to use. In the Sources dock, click + and choose VLC Video.
- Add the MP4 files to the VLC Video playlist in the order you want them to play. Use the playlist controls to adjust the order if needed.
- Enable Loop Playlist if the sequence should restart after the last file. Leave Shuffle Playlist off for a fixed order.
- Check the OBS preview and audio meters. Confirm the intended video is visible and that its audio is reaching the stream mix.
If you need to play just one local MP4, OBS’s Media Source supports MP4 and can loop a single file. For a sequence of files, VLC Video is the playlist source. The VLC source will not appear if VLC is missing. OBS Project: Media Sources
3. Connect OBS to YouTube
- In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select the YouTube service or the connection option specified by YouTube, and enter the event’s stream key or follow the connection flow provided by OBS.
- Match the output resolution, frame rate, and encoder settings to your intended broadcast and available upload bandwidth. Use the current settings and guidance in YouTube Live Control Room rather than assuming one bitrate suits every resolution or connection.
- Apply the settings, then start streaming from OBS. Keep the YouTube event open and wait for its preview to show the incoming feed.
- Check the preview, video, and sound before making the event public or beginning it for viewers. YouTube recommends checking the preview before starting. YouTube Help: Streaming tips
Rehearse and monitor the broadcast
Run a complete rehearsal using the same scene, resolution, frame rate, audio, playlist order, and drive you intend to use live. Confirm that each file advances as expected, audio remains audible, the drive stays mounted, and the YouTube preview looks and sounds right. Test under representative network conditions, leave the recommended upload headroom, and monitor stream health while live. YouTube Help: Streaming tips

What happens to the live replay?
YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived and recommends keeping a local archive as a backup. Do not rely on an automatic archive for a longer broadcast: YouTube warns that streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. YouTube Help: Archive live streams

Troubleshooting local MP4 livestreams
VLC Video is missing from the Sources menu
Install VLC and restart or reopen OBS. If you use 64-bit OBS, OBS specifies 64-bit VLC for the VLC source. OBS Project: Media Sources
Only one file plays, or files overlap
Make sure you added the files to one VLC Video source’s playlist, rather than creating separate sources that play at the same time. Check the playlist order and the Loop Playlist and Shuffle Playlist options.

A file is missing or playback stops
Check that the external drive is still mounted and that the playlist source still points to the file’s current location. Restore access, then test the whole playlist again before reconnecting to the live event. Playback after a drive disconnect is not guaranteed.
The YouTube preview buffers or looks poor
Check OBS’s output settings and YouTube’s stream health, then compare the total upload bitrate with the connection’s available upload capacity. YouTube recommends roughly 20% upload headroom and testing before going live. YouTube Help: Streaming tips
