If the broadcast drops at that moment, treat the timing as a clue—not proof that losing focus caused it. Check whether OBS stopped sending, its connection to YouTube’s ingest server failed, or YouTube ended the broadcast after encoder input stopped.
First, identify which part of the stream stopped
During a controlled test, switch to another application and then return to OBS. Watch OBS’s stream status, connection indicator, and dropped-frame count, and check YouTube Studio to see whether the live broadcast is still active. The distinction matters: each failure point calls for a different fix.

OBS’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide, dated September 30, 2024, says intermittent disconnections indicate a network issue between the computer and the remote stream ingest server. It does not identify window focus as a cause.
If OBS disconnects or drops frames
Dropped frames mean OBS cannot reliably deliver the configured stream to the remote server. OBS says the connection may be unstable or the configured bitrate may be more than it can sustain; sufficiently many dropped frames can disconnect the stream. Work through the connection rather than changing focus-related settings at random.

- Check whether your upload connection is stable. Look for dropped frames or a disconnect in OBS while the stream is running. Other devices or activity using the same connection can affect the capacity available to your stream.
- Reduce the video bitrate if the connection cannot sustain it. Choose a bitrate that fits your stable upload capacity, not just a best-case speed reading. Lowering bitrate can reduce the load on the connection, though it may reduce stream quality.
- Test a different ingest server. OBS lists trying another server as a troubleshooting step. If a different server improves stability, the original route may have been the problem.
- Check whether a VPN or security software is interfering. Test with those factors changed only if doing so is safe for your network and device. Restore your normal protections after the test.
- Use dynamic bitrate only as a fallback. OBS presents it as a way to adapt when connection conditions vary, not as a fix for the underlying connection problem.
See OBS’s connection troubleshooting recommendations for its current guidance. The right bitrate and server depend on your connection and setup; there is no focus-loss setting that can substitute for a stable path to the ingest server.
If OBS is still connected but YouTube ends the broadcast
Check the broadcast’s encoder lifecycle settings in YouTube Studio. YouTube’s encoder setup guide documents auto-start and auto-stop: these settings allow the encoder to start or stop the broadcast. Confirm them on the specific stream, especially if it is scheduled or reuses settings from an earlier broadcast.

OBS’s YouTube guide also describes scheduled-stream behavior in which reconnection may be possible when auto-stop is disabled. That guide is older; do not rely on it as a guarantee or assume the current Studio interface behaves identically. Check the current settings for your broadcast. It also describes broadcasts eventually ending after multiple hours without input, so verify any such behavior in the current interface rather than treating it as a dependable keepalive.
If OBS itself stops sending
Inspect OBS’s stream controls and logs to determine whether output actually stopped. OBS’s overview documents automatic reconnect in Advanced settings and configurable hotkeys for starting and stopping a stream.

- Automatic reconnect can help OBS recover after a disconnect. It does not guarantee a fix for focus loss, a failing connection, or YouTube ending the broadcast.
- Streaming hotkeys can help identify accidental start or stop actions. Review the configured shortcuts and whether another application or device could trigger them.
- Check the labels in your installed OBS version. The available controls and their locations can change between versions; use the OBS interface and documentation corresponding to your installation.
Prepare a stream so one failure is not a surprise
For an important broadcast, test the full setup before the event. YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends trying encoder failover, monitoring audio and video, confirming the event is viewable, and checking that the local archive file is growing. These are operational safeguards; they do not establish that losing focus caused a prior interruption.
YouTube’s documented end procedure is to click End Stream and stop sending content from the encoder. Follow the current Studio workflow for your broadcast rather than assuming that closing or switching away from OBS ends it correctly.

Common problems and fixes
- The interruption happens every time I switch windows. The coincidence still does not establish focus as the cause. Observe OBS and YouTube Studio during a controlled test to find out which layer changes state.
- OBS shows dropped frames before the stream fails. Investigate connection stability and bitrate first; then test another ingest server and check VPN or security-software interference.
- OBS says it is streaming, but YouTube shows the broadcast has ended. Review auto-start and auto-stop settings on that broadcast, along with its scheduled-stream configuration.
- OBS reconnects, but the stream does not resume on YouTube. Verify the broadcast lifecycle settings and current scheduled-stream behavior in YouTube Studio. Automatic reconnect in OBS is not a guarantee that YouTube will keep the broadcast open.
- The controls or menus do not match these descriptions. OBS and YouTube can change interface labels. Check the documentation for your installed OBS version and the current YouTube Studio screen.
