In Valve’s September 2026 Steam Hardware & Software Survey, 32GB of RAM was more common than 16GB among Windows systems: 43.28% versus 37.60%. That result describes the survey’s Windows distribution, not game performance or a recommendation to upgrade. Linux showed the opposite ordering, with 16GB ahead of 32GB.
How much RAM did surveyed Steam systems have?
Valve’s monthly survey reports the share of systems in each hardware category. In the September 2026 platform-filtered results, the leading capacities differed between Windows and Linux:
| Platform and survey month | 16GB RAM | 32GB RAM | What led |
|---|---|---|---|
| Windows, September 2026 | 37.60% | 43.28% | 32GB by 5.68 percentage points |
| Linux, September 2026 | 40.85% | 32.44% | 16GB by 8.41 percentage points |
These are shares of surveyed systems within each operating-system view, not counts of all Steam users. The 5.68-point Windows lead is calculated from Valve’s reported percentages.
Did Windows 32GB RAM gain ground?
In Valve’s September 2026 Windows table, 32GB increased by 4.81 percentage points month over month, while 16GB decreased by 3.47 percentage points. Those movements describe changes in the reported distribution; the table does not establish why they occurred.

Does 32GB beat 16GB for Steam gaming?
Only in prevalence among the Windows systems shown in that month’s survey. The figures do not compare frame rates, load times, or other game performance, and they cannot determine the best capacity for an individual PC. A survey share is descriptive, not a system requirement or upgrade recommendation.
How to interpret Valve’s survey
Valve says participation is optional and anonymous. Its monthly Windows and Linux tables are platform-filtered distributions; the survey description does not establish a probability sample or population margin of error. Accordingly, the results should be read as reported survey data rather than a complete census of Steam users.

The survey alone cannot answer that. Before buying memory, check your motherboard and processor support, DDR generation, available slots, and current configuration. The reported prevalence of 32GB does not establish compatibility with your computer or prove that an upgrade will improve your games.
