First identify whether the audio-video mismatch is constant, grows over time, jumps intermittently, or affects only some viewers. Then compare a local recording with YouTube playback and correct the stage where the problem appears. A fixed offset may respond to a measured source delay; growing drift usually needs a timing or capture investigation, not an arbitrary delay.
Identify the kind of sync problem
Use a visible event paired with a sharp sound in the stream, or another repeatable audio-video cue. Check more than one point in the program and note what changes. This is a practical diagnostic approach, not a formal calibration procedure prescribed by YouTube or OBS.
- Stable offset: the picture and its sound are already apart near the start, and the difference stays roughly the same.
- Growing drift: the gap gets larger as the stream continues.
- Intermittent jump: sync changes suddenly, perhaps around a source change or media loop. Treat the timing as a clue to investigate, not proof that looping caused the problem.
- Viewer-specific trouble: some people report a mismatch or buffering while others do not.
Record when the symptom starts and whether it changes. In a 24/7 stream, note whether it returns after a restart or around a media-loop boundary.
Compare the local recording with YouTube playback
If possible, compare an OBS local recording with YouTube playback from the same period. If both are out of sync, investigate the sources, capture, and encoder configuration. If the local file looks right but YouTube playback does not, inspect Live Control Room health information and the delivery path. This comparison helps locate the stage to investigate; it does not prove a single cause.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Choose a section containing a repeatable sound-and-picture cue.
- Check that moment in the local recording and in the YouTube stream or playback.
- Record whether the mismatch is constant, increasing, sudden, or limited to particular viewers.
- Check OBS statistics and YouTube Live Control Room health messages for the same time period.
Correct a stable offset at the source
Work out which source leads before changing a setting. For example, if the picture appears before its paired sound, delaying that image may bring it into alignment. OBS describes its Render Delay filter as a way to delay a source image and specifically identifies webcam-and-microphone sync as a use case. See the OBS Render Delay Filter documentation.
- In OBS, identify the source whose timing needs correction.
- Apply a small, measured Render Delay to the image source if the image leads its corresponding audio. Do not apply the adjustment indiscriminately to every source.
- If adjusting an audio source instead, determine the needed change empirically; there is no universal offset that works for all devices and media paths.
- Make one change at a time, then check the encoded recording and YouTube playback again.
Do not copy an offset from a different device or platform and assume it will fit this stream. The amount must be measured against your sources and the delivered output.

Investigate drift instead of hiding it with a fixed delay
A static offset can correct a constant difference, but it cannot correct a mismatch that keeps growing. Check whether the problem follows a particular audio or video source, whether audio is captured by a separate device, and whether the same device is being captured twice.
- Check for duplicate audio capture. OBS warns that selecting the same device globally and again as an Audio Input/Output Capture source can cause echo. Review OBS Audio Sources and remove unintended duplicate capture.
- Test device timestamps when applicable. In Windows, OBS audio capture properties include a “Use Device Timestamps” option. OBS says it attempts to use device timing information to prevent desynchronization. Compare controlled recordings with the option enabled and disabled; it is not a guaranteed fix.
- Check source changes and loops. Note whether the mismatch changes when media reloads or loops. That timing can help isolate a source, but OBS documentation does not establish looping as a general cause of drift.
Check encoding and delivery health
Look at OBS statistics and YouTube Live Control Room health messages around the time of the problem. OBS says dropped frames indicate that a connection is unstable or cannot keep up with the set bitrate. Dropped frames point to a delivery issue worth investigating, but they do not by themselves explain a source-level sync offset. See OBS Stream Connection Troubleshooting.

- If OBS reports dropped frames, check upload capacity, network software, Wi-Fi, router, and hardware. OBS recommends a wired connection because Wi-Fi may be unstable. Its guidance suggests 75% of total upload speed as a starting point for video bitrate, not a guaranteed threshold.
- YouTube recommends choosing a stream quality that the available internet connection can sustain, testing before going live with representative audio and video movement, and monitoring stream health during the event. It transcodes live streams into output formats for viewers. See YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
- Use the specific warning shown in YouTube health messages to guide changes. The platform can flag format and codec, audio configuration, bitrate, sample rate, keyframe frequency, insufficient incoming video, and mismatches between primary and backup stream settings.
Audio and keyframe checks
YouTube Help’s live-stream error guidance calls for H.264 video and AAC audio for proper ingestion. It reports audio warnings that may call for a 44.1 kHz sample rate, while Google’s Live Streaming API health documentation lists 44.1 kHz and 48 kHz as recommended. These are context-dependent health recommendations, not evidence that one sample rate universally fixes sync. YouTube’s error guidance also says to send one audio stream and supports mono or stereo channels. See YouTube’s live streaming error messages and the YouTube Live Streaming API health status messages, last updated 2026-09-14 UTC.
YouTube’s encoder-health guidance lists a keyframe frequency of four seconds or less to avoid buffering from keyframes being sent too infrequently. That is not an audio-sync offset. If you use primary and backup ingestion, match relevant settings such as codecs, sample rate, and keyframe frequency.

Check the playback experience across viewers
When only some viewers report trouble, ask them to check another device or network if possible, and compare their reports with the stream’s health information. Viewer buffering can vary with location, connection, device, and YouTube’s transcoded rendition; it can occur even when OBS shows no dropped frames. OBS discusses these differences in its Stream Buffering Troubleshooting guide.
Avoid imposing a global source delay based only on one viewer’s report: it could make the stream wrong for everyone else. Keep a record of the tested source settings, observation point, and health warnings so recurring symptoms can be compared.
