Generally, yes: GST can apply to a taxable cloud-hosting service billed to an Indian customer. The correct treatment depends on the supplier named on the invoice, where the supplier and recipient are located, the recipient’s GST registration and receiving establishment, and the invoice details. A foreign supplier may mean the transaction needs to be assessed as an import of services. The fact that the hosting supports a YouTube live stream does not, by itself, change the GST analysis.
First check which company actually billed you
A cloud brand may provide the service through an Indian entity or a company located outside India. Start with the legal supplier named on the contract and invoice, rather than relying only on the product name or website. Supplier identity and location affect which place-of-supply rules apply under the IGST Act.
The bill for cloud hosting is separate from GST questions about YouTube itself or tax treatment of a creator’s stream revenue. This article concerns the hosting service charge.
If an Indian supplier bills an Indian customer
For services supplied within India, the IGST Act’s general place-of-supply rule for a registered recipient is the recipient’s location, unless a specified exception applies. For an unregistered recipient, the address on record is used where available; otherwise, the supplier’s location is used. The supplier’s location and the resulting place of supply help determine whether the supply is intra-State or inter-State.

Accordingly, GST will generally apply to a taxable domestic cloud-hosting service, but the available facts do not establish which tax line should appear on every customer’s bill. Do not assume that a particular invoice must show CGST and SGST, or IGST, without checking the parties’ locations and the recipient details.
If a foreign supplier bills an Indian customer
A service can qualify as an import of services when the supplier is outside India, the recipient is in India, and the place of supply is in India. Under the general cross-border place-of-supply rule, the recipient’s location is used unless a specified exception applies. The IGST Act treats imported services as inter-State supplies.

CBIC’s IT/ITES FAQs say that an Indian business purchasing foreign software attracts IGST when the import conditions are met; the currency used for payment does not change that example’s result. That guidance is relevant context, not a substitute for checking whether your cloud invoice is actually from a foreign supplier and how the service and recipient facts fit the rules.
Why the data-hosting export circular does not exempt your bill
CBIC Circular No. 232/26/2024-GST, dated 10 September 2024, addresses a different transaction: an Indian data-hosting provider supplying a foreign cloud-computing entity. In that fact pattern, CBIC says the Indian provider supplies hosting on its own account, rather than acting as an intermediary; it treats the place of supply as the overseas recipient’s location and says the service can qualify as an export if the other statutory conditions are met. The circular concerns an Indian supplier’s upstream service to an overseas cloud company—not an Indian customer buying cloud hosting. It is not a general exemption for hosting bills paid by Indian customers.

What to check on the invoice
- Supplier: Note the legal name and location of the entity that supplied the service, and any GSTIN shown.
- Recipient: Check the billing details, GST registration status, and which establishment received the service.
- Service description: Confirm that the invoice describes the cloud-hosting service you purchased.
- Tax line: Compare the supplier and recipient details with the tax charged, without assuming a particular tax type or rate from the service name alone.
- Ask for the basis: If the bill is disputed or material, ask the vendor which entity supplied the service and why GST was charged. A business should ask its GST practitioner to review the contract and actual invoice, including any import, registration, or input tax credit questions.
CBIC’s invoice rules include requirements for invoices and special export endorsements. They do not establish the treatment of an individual cloud-hosting bill without its transaction details.
Does the cloud-hosting service have a specific GST rate?
The official materials cited here establish the relevant place-of-supply and import framework, but they do not verify a rate for this particular cloud-hosting service classification. A percentage should not be inferred from these rules alone. For a specific charge, confirm the service classification and tax treatment with the billing supplier or a qualified GST practitioner.
