To have OBS retry a dropped YouTube Live connection, open Settings → Advanced in OBS Studio and enable Automatic Reconnect. This can retry the encoder’s connection to YouTube; it cannot fix a bad stream key, restore an unavailable network, or repair a frozen camera or media source.
Enable automatic reconnect in OBS
- Open OBS Studio and select Settings.
- Select Advanced.
- Find and enable Automatic Reconnect, then select Apply or OK to save the change.
The OBS Studio Overview Guide identifies Automatic Reconnect in Advanced settings: OBS Studio Overview Guide. Exact labels and any retry-delay or retry-count fields can vary by installed version; the guide does not establish universal values for those fields. If your build shows them, use the labels and defaults in that build rather than assuming a particular retry interval or number of attempts.
What automatic reconnect can—and cannot—recover
Automatic Reconnect is for retrying a dropped streaming connection between OBS and the platform. It is not a backup-encoder failover system, and it cannot guarantee that viewers experience an uninterrupted broadcast. If the computer has no working route to YouTube, or OBS is sending invalid credentials, repeated retries alone will not make the stream work.
It also should not be treated as a repair for an input problem. The reviewed OBS documentation describes the streaming reconnect setting, not recovery for a frozen camera, stalled media file, or other source that has stopped producing usable video or audio. Check the source separately if the connection is live but its picture or sound is not advancing.

Check YouTube’s stream selection and credentials
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and confirm you have selected the intended live stream.
- Check that OBS is configured with the stream URL and stream key for that stream. YouTube describes the key as the credential that tells the encoder where to send the feed and lets YouTube accept it. See Manage live stream settings.
- If the stream key was reset, copy the new key from YouTube and update OBS. A reconnect attempt using an old key will not authenticate with the new one.
Do not share your stream key: treat it like a password for sending a feed to your channel.
Test before going live and monitor stream health
Before an important broadcast, test the setup and check that the expected picture and sound appear in the YouTube Live Control Room preview. While live, monitor YouTube’s stream-health messages as well as OBS’s connection status. YouTube’s guidance on encoder setup and checks is in Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

For video encoder settings such as bitrate, resolution, and keyframe interval, follow YouTube’s current recommendations for your chosen format in Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions. These are stream-configuration settings, not reconnect controls; changing them is not a substitute for correcting a failed connection.
Troubleshoot repeated disconnects
OBS reconnects but YouTube does not accept the feed
- Likely cause: The wrong stream is selected, or the key or stream URL is incorrect or outdated.
- What to do: Recheck the selected stream in Live Control Room and the credentials in OBS. If the key was reset, replace the old key with the current one.
OBS keeps dropping frames or disconnecting
- Likely cause: An unstable connection or insufficient available upload capacity. OBS notes that dropped frames and intermittent disconnections are commonly network issues between the computer and the remote ingest server, often outside OBS’s control.
- What to do: Check that the connection is stable, pause competing network use, and compare the total streaming bitrate with available upload bandwidth. YouTube recommends leaving 20% spare capacity beyond the total stream bitrate and warns that a connectivity disruption can break a stream. The connection is live, but the image or sound is frozen
- Likely cause: The issue may be an OBS input or media source rather than the encoder-to-YouTube connection.
- What to do: Check whether the source itself is still updating and producing audio or video. Automatic Reconnect is not established as a fix for a stalled source.
Retries do not restore the stream
- Likely cause: The network path may still be unavailable, or YouTube may not be accepting the feed because of a credential or stream-selection problem.
- What to do: Check the network and credentials, then use the OBS connection troubleshooting steps. Reconnect retries cannot create upload capacity or correct an invalid key.
