How to Fix Echoing Alerts on a Live Stream

If a stream alert plays twice or has a short echo in OBS Studio, first check for duplicate audio paths: the alert’s Browser Source, a global audio device, a scene-level capture source, or a monitoring output may be sending the same sound into OBS more than once. Trigger a test alert, watch the Audio Mixer meters, disable overlapping routes one at a time, then record and listen to a short test before going live. The cause depends on how your audio is routed, so use the meters and recording to isolate it rather than changing several settings at once.

Why stream alerts echo in OBS

OBS Studio does not provide stream alerts directly. Alert services typically supply an overlay that you add to a scene as a Browser Source. That source can produce alert audio, while other OBS sources may also capture the same sound through desktop audio, an audio device, application audio, or a monitoring loop.

OBS warns that an Audio Input/Output Capture source can cause echo if the same device is also selected in Settings → Audio. In practical terms, one sound can enter OBS through two routes. A similar overlap can happen when per-application capture is active alongside global Desktop Audio, or when an OBS monitoring output is itself captured back into the mix.

Find which OBS source is duplicating the alert

1. Locate the alert Browser Source

  1. Open the scene you use when the alert occurs and find the alert provider’s Browser Source in the Sources list.
  2. Make sure that source is represented in the Audio Mixer. If the alert is audible, keep the mixer visible while testing.
  3. Check whether the same alert Browser Source has also been added to another source group, nested scene, or active scene in a way that could make it present more than once. Do not assume this is the cause unless the test points to it.

2. Trigger one test alert and watch the meters

  1. Use the alert service’s test function to trigger a single sound.
  2. Watch which Audio Mixer meters move at that moment. If multiple source meters react in sync, note their names: they are candidates for overlapping capture.
  3. If only the alert source meter moves, continue to check monitoring and make a recording. Meter behavior is a useful isolation clue, not a formal OBS echo test.

3. Make a short recording and listen back

Record a brief test with one alert and listen to the resulting file. Your own headphones can make a monitoring loop sound different from what OBS is actually recording, so local listening alone is not enough to confirm what viewers will hear. OBS’s Quick Start guidance recommends checking meters and testing settings before a live stream.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Remove duplicate device capture

Compare the sources in the active scene with the global devices selected in OBS:

  • Open Settings → Audio and note whether the relevant microphone or output device is enabled globally.
  • In the active scene, look for an Audio Input Capture or Audio Output Capture source using that same device.
  • If the same device is being captured both ways, disable one route. OBS’s Audio Sources guidance specifically warns about this overlap; keep the route that gives you the control you need and remove the redundant one.
  • Trigger the same test alert again and record another short sample. Change one route at a time so you can tell which change made a difference.

Audio Input/Output Capture sources are documented for Windows and macOS. On Linux, OBS points users to ALSA or PulseAudio sources instead, so the exact source names and routing options may differ.

Check Desktop Audio against per-application capture

If you use an Application Audio Capture source on Windows, OBS advises disabling global Desktop Audio to avoid echo. Otherwise, the same application sound may be picked up once by the application-specific source and again by the desktop mix.

  • Application Audio Capture is documented for OBS Studio 28 and later on Windows 10 version 2004 or later, and Windows 11.
  • Window Capture and Game Capture can include application audio beginning with OBS Studio 30.1.
  • These documented behaviors are Windows-specific; do not assume identical controls on macOS or Linux.

For an incompatible Windows application, OBS’s Application Audio Capture guide describes VB-CABLE as a workaround in some cases. It is not a universal remedy for alert echo, and adding a virtual audio route without mapping every input and output can create further overlap.

Inspect OBS monitoring routes

Monitoring lets you hear a source through OBS’s configured monitoring device. It does not, by itself, mean that the stream needs a second copy of that source. A duplicate can arise if the monitoring output is routed back into an input OBS is capturing.

  1. Open Advanced Audio Properties from the Audio Mixer.
  2. Check the alert source’s monitoring mode and decide whether you need to hear that alert locally.
  3. Check the monitoring device configured in OBS, then check whether that device or its output is also captured by a scene source or global audio device.
  4. If the monitoring output feeds back into a captured input, break that loop or choose a monitoring route that is not being captured. Retest with a short recording.

OBS’s mixer guidance explains the monitoring path. The warning about capturing a monitored output producing feedback is troubleshooting advice also described in an older OBS community forum discussion, rather than a guaranteed explanation for every echo.

Match the symptom to the next check

The alert sounds doubled or repeats with a short delay

Prioritize duplicate-device capture, overlapping Desktop Audio and per-application capture, and a monitoring output that feeds back into a captured input. These are likely routes to inspect, not a diagnosis based on the sound alone.

The alert repeats after a scene switch or refresh

Check whether the alert Browser Source is present more than once across the active scene or scene collection. Browser Source properties include Shutdown source when not visible and Refresh browser source when scene becomes active. Review whether either behavior affects your setup, but treat these as secondary checks: OBS does not establish them as general fixes for echo.

You hear a duplicate, but viewers do not

Investigate your local monitoring path and whether the monitoring device is being captured. If viewers hear the duplicate but you do not, inspect the sources routed to the stream output instead. This distinction is a useful routing diagnostic, not a guaranteed mapping between one symptom and one setting.

Verify the fix before going live

  • Trigger a single test alert and watch the mixer for unexpected source activity.
  • Make a short recording and listen for one clean alert rather than relying only on headphone monitoring.
  • If the problem remains, restore the last known working route and test one capture or monitoring change at a time.

OBS’s interface wording can vary by version. Its Audio Mixer Guide is dated April 3, 2026; the relevant OBS documentation also includes an Application Audio Capture Guide dated July 12, 2023, an alert article dated October 7, 2022, and Audio Sources and Browser Source guides dated January 11, 2022. Check the labels in your installed version when following these steps.

Or let it run in the cloud

StreamNeo is a separate option for keeping an uploaded video live on YouTube; it does not diagnose or repair OBS alert routing, and it does not stream from a camera. For alert troubleshooting, use the OBS steps above. If your broader goal is a 24/7 YouTube channel built from uploaded videos, the setup is: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops the video from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Each slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or start the free day.
