Start in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room: read the stream-health message, its timestamp, and its severity before changing encoder settings. Then trace the fault through the stream key, encoder configuration and preview, internet connection, and account or copyright restrictions. This order helps distinguish a problem viewers can see from a cause you can actually fix.
1. Read the stream-health message first
Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and check the stream-health indicator. YouTube displays specific errors with timestamps. A red error is critical and may stop the event or cause viewer problems; a yellow error is moderate and may degrade quality. Start with the exact message and fix it before changing unrelated settings. See YouTube’s live-streaming error messages.
- Note when the error first appeared and whether it recurs. Compare its time with encoder or network changes.
- Check whether the issue appears in the Live Control Room, the encoder preview, or only in viewer reports. These clues point to different parts of the setup.
- If a warning is transient, keep monitoring stream health; do not assume that a brief recovery means the underlying issue is resolved.
2. Fix an encoder that will not start
If the encoder reports an “error starting your encoder,” first check whether it is sending to the current YouTube stream key.
- In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and select Stream.
- Copy the current stream key.
- In your third-party encoder, replace the saved key with the current one, then try starting the stream again.
Do not share the key: anyone with access to it may be able to send a stream to your channel. If your software connects to YouTube by signing in and does not expose a stream-key field, YouTube directs users to the software provider’s support team. The precise labels in third-party software vary. See YouTube’s encoder troubleshooting guidance.

3. Correct video, audio, bitrate, and keyframe settings
Messages such as “incorrect bitrates,” “incorrect audio settings,” “incorrect video settings,” or “incorrect video keyframe frequency” are specific diagnoses. Check the relevant encoder setting against YouTube’s current guidance for the ingest mode and codec you selected; requirements can differ. Do not apply an H.264 bitrate to an AV1 or H.265 stream.
Video format and keyframes
For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube’s encoder-settings guidance lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, constant-bitrate encoding, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval. Its error guide says not to exceed four seconds. Set a two-second interval when available, and follow the exact error shown in Live Control Room. See YouTube’s encoder settings and error guidance.
Choose a bitrate your upload connection can sustain
YouTube recommends testing upload speed and choosing a quality level that can be delivered reliably. For H.264, its current table lists these figures:

| Resolution and frame rate | Minimum bitrate | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
These are YouTube Help’s H.264 configuration recommendations, accessed in 2026—not guarantees that a particular connection will remain stable. YouTube lists different bitrate ranges for AV1 and H.265. Check the table for your chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate at YouTube’s encoder-settings page. If your tested upload capacity cannot support the selected stream reliably, lower the resolution or other quality demands rather than forcing a bitrate the connection cannot sustain.

If the health message identifies audio, verify that the encoder is sending an accepted audio codec and that the intended audio source is enabled and routed correctly. For video or format warnings, check the codec, container, resolution, frame rate, bitrate mode, and keyframe interval against YouTube’s page and the error message. Changing several settings at once can make it harder to identify which change fixed the problem.
4. Locate “stream looks or sounds bad” problems
Inspect the stream in the encoder preview. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance uses the preview to help separate problems in the encoder or its inputs from trouble delivering the stream to viewers.

If the encoder preview is already poor
- Check encoder errors and CPU load. High load or software problems can affect the video or audio before it reaches YouTube.
- Inspect the local recording, if available, and the camera, microphone, game capture, or other audio/video sources routed into the encoder. A bad source will still look or sound bad when streamed.
- Update the encoder software and review its own diagnostics. If the issue remains, try another encoder to help isolate whether the current software or configuration is involved.
If the encoder preview is healthy but viewers report problems
Test the outbound internet connection used by the encoder. If the test points to an unstable or insufficient connection, reduce the stream’s quality demands or contact your internet service provider. Compare reports across viewers: a problem affecting one person may be on that viewer’s connection, while reports from viewers on different connections can point back toward the stream being sent by the encoder. These are diagnostic clues, not proof by themselves.
5. Check latency when playback buffers
Latency settings involve a trade-off: lower latency can make interaction feel more immediate, but YouTube notes that it may increase playback buffering. If viewers report buffering, consider whether the stream needs low latency for live interaction. A less aggressive latency choice may be preferable when stable playback matters more than near-real-time responses. See YouTube’s stream settings guidance.

6. Rule out copyright and channel restrictions
A technically healthy encoder and connection do not rule out a policy interruption. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. A match may produce a warning or placeholder, interrupt the stream, or terminate it; channel strikes can also end a live stream. Check YouTube Studio for warnings and strikes. For material you are licensed to use, the rights holder may need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. See YouTube’s guidance on live-stream copyright issues.

Do not assume that owning a copy of a song, game soundtrack, or video gives you live-streaming rights. Resolve the restriction with the rights holder or use content you are authorized to stream; changing bitrate or replacing the encoder will not clear a copyright match.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.7. Use live and post-stream metrics to verify the fix
During the event, use Live Control Room’s stream health and real-time analytics to see whether the error clears and whether the stream remains stable. YouTube says video-level metrics in Analytics become available within minutes after a live stream ends. Use those post-stream results to review the event, but rely on live health messages when diagnosing an active interruption. See YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting page.
8. Prevent problems before the next stream
- Test the full setup with movement and audio similar to the planned event; a static test can miss problems that occur during gameplay or other motion.
- Open the Live Control Room preview and confirm the event page is accessible before the scheduled start.
- Start and prepare the encoder well ahead of the event so there is time to address warnings before viewers arrive.
- Monitor picture and sound throughout the broadcast, not only at startup.
- Choose codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and latency settings for both the event’s needs and the measured connection.
YouTube’s preparation tips are available at its encoder settings and streaming tips.

9. Optional: replace an encoder only when diagnosis points to it
Buying a hardware encoder is not a default fix for buffering, copyright restrictions, a bad microphone source, or a weak upload connection. Consider equipment only if your production needs or tests show that the current encoding setup is the limitation. YouTube discusses encoder hardware as an option for higher-production-value events; start with the fault you identified, not a purchase. See YouTube’s encoder options.
