OBS Studio is the best free software choice for sending a prerecorded video to YouTube as a live stream from a computer. It is open-source and free to use, and YouTube supports software encoders such as OBS. The important limitation: OBS does not keep a stream online if the computer, power or internet connection stops. For an always-on stream without leaving a computer running at home, a YouTube-only cloud service such as StreamNeo is an alternative.
Why OBS Studio is the free choice
OBS Studio is an open-source software encoder. The OBS Project says it is free for any use, with no watermark or usage limitations; it is distributed under GPLv2. YouTube accepts encoder software running on a computer, so OBS can send a prerecorded video to YouTube as a live encoder feed. This is different from uploading a normal video, which viewers watch on demand rather than as a continuous live broadcast.
OBS itself does not require a software subscription, but the computer running it and its internet connection must remain available. This approach is suitable if you can dedicate a computer to the broadcast and can monitor it. It is not a guarantee of uninterrupted 24/7 uptime.
What you need before starting
- A YouTube channel eligible to livestream: it must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. YouTube states that first-time live-streaming activation may take up to 24 hours, and that users must be at least 16 to livestream. Check YouTube’s current live-streaming eligibility guidance.
- A computer that can run OBS continuously and an internet connection capable of keeping the encoder connected. The cited YouTube and OBS guidance does not establish a minimum computer specification or an India-specific hardware requirement.
- A prerecorded video and the rights to stream both its video and audio.
- The stream URL and stream key from YouTube Studio. Treat the key as private account access information; do not share or publish it.
Set up OBS to send a prerecorded video to YouTube
- Enable live streaming. In YouTube Studio, follow the live-streaming setup flow and confirm that the channel meets YouTube’s eligibility requirements. Allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation.
- Create or select a stream. Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and create a stream or select an existing one. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions explain where to get the stream URL and stream key.
- Enter the connection details in OBS. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, choose YouTube as the service if available, and enter the stream key. If the connection flow asks for the stream URL as well, copy it from YouTube’s Live Control Room. Do not expose the key in a recording, screenshot or public chat.
- Add the prerecorded source. Add the video file as a source in the OBS scene you intend to stream. Check the preview and audio before going live. For a continuous loop or playlist, use a current OBS guide to configure and verify the playback behavior; the exact loop setup is not established here, so do not assume a file will repeat automatically.
- Start the encoder and check YouTube. Start streaming in OBS, then watch the Live Control Room preview and stream-health indicators before and during the broadcast. Confirm that the expected video and audio are reaching YouTube.
- Keep a local recording if the replay matters. Monitor both the broadcast and any local recording. YouTube recommends checking that local archive files remain intact and grow as expected; see its live-streaming tips for computer.
Plan around YouTube’s 12-hour archive and DVR limits
YouTube says a live stream shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, while a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. It recommends keeping a local archive backup. A single continuous 24-hour broadcast therefore should not be treated as a guaranteed complete replay. If you need a complete archive, plan shorter sessions below 12 hours and retain local recordings. YouTube also warns that DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours; see its archive guidance and DVR guidance.

Copyright and channel safety
Only send video and audio for which you have the rights needed to livestream on YouTube. YouTube scans live broadcasts for third-party content. A match can replace the stream with a placeholder, interrupt it or terminate it. Even licensed content may be interrupted if the rights holder has not added your channel to its Content ID allowlist. YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance explains these interruptions, and its livestream terms make the creator responsible for having the necessary rights, including music licenses.

When OBS is not the right fit
OBS is free software, but a local setup depends on the equipment and connection at the broadcast location. If the computer shuts down, loses power or disconnects, the encoder cannot keep sending the stream. Consider a hosted option if your priority is leaving your home computer off; compare the service’s price, prerecorded-video support, looping, stream-key handling, recovery behavior and archive limits before relying on it.
