Use Media Source to repeat one video file in OBS: add the file and enable Loop. Use VLC Video to repeat a playlist: add the files and enable Loop Playlist. The right choice depends on whether you need one file or a list—not on YouTube Live itself.
Which OBS source should you use?
| Need | Choose | What repeats | Requirement |
|---|---|---|---|
| One video file on repeat | Media Source | The same file starts again when playback ends | No VLC dependency |
| Several files played as a playlist | VLC Video | The list starts over after its final item | VLC installed; match its architecture to OBS |
These options are not interchangeable loop controls. Media Source’s Loop setting repeats its individual file. VLC Video’s Loop Playlist setting restarts the playlist after it runs out of media files. OBS’s Media Sources documentation, dated January 11, 2022, describes these separate behaviors (OBS Media Sources).
How to loop one video with Media Source
- Add the source: In OBS, select the scene where the video should appear. In the Sources box, click + and choose Media Source.
- Choose the file: Create a new source or select an existing one, then browse to the video file.
- Enable looping: In the source properties, check Loop. This makes the file play again after it finishes.
- Check scene-activation behavior: Restart playback when source becomes active is a separate setting. OBS lists it as on by default. It affects playback when the source becomes visible in the current scene; it does not replace the loop-at-end setting.
- Confirm the result: Start playback in OBS and check both the picture and audio. OBS lists Media Source for Windows, macOS, and Linux.
How to loop a playlist with VLC Video
- Install VLC first: VLC Video uses VLC libraries for extended media support. Install VLC before adding the source. If you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC.
- Add the playlist source: In the scene’s Sources box, click + and choose VLC Video.
- Add media files: Use the source properties to add the files you want in the playlist and arrange them in the intended order.
- Choose playlist behavior: Enable Loop Playlist to restart the list after its last file. Shuffle Playlist is a separate option and is off by default according to OBS’s documentation.
- Check visibility behavior: OBS documents a VLC source behavior that stops playback when the source is not visible and restarts it when visible. Verify the actual properties in your installed OBS version before relying on that behavior.
- Preview the full sequence: Confirm the order, audio, and restart behavior. OBS does not promise that the transition at a loop boundary will be gapless.
What happens between OBS and YouTube Live
OBS loops the media locally, then sends its encoded output to YouTube Live. The loop source does not change YouTube’s encoder setup or channel eligibility requirements.
- Check eligibility: YouTube’s live-stream help page says a channel must be verified and must not have live-stream restrictions in the previous 90 days. It also says streamers must be at least 16 years old. These are YouTube requirements, not OBS source requirements (YouTube live-streaming requirements).
- Get the encoder details: In YouTube Live Control Room, select the encoder workflow and copy the stream URL and stream key into OBS’s stream settings. Keep the key private. YouTube’s setup instructions explain the encoder workflow (Set up your encoder for live streaming).
- Set encoder output appropriately: YouTube’s encoder guidance covers RTMP/RTMPS and H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1. It supports frame rates up to 60 fps and recommends a two-second keyframe interval, which should not exceed four seconds. Follow the current YouTube recommendations and use settings your encoder and connection can sustain (YouTube encoder settings).
- Allow bandwidth headroom: YouTube says total stream bitrate must fit the available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% headroom. This applies to the whole outgoing stream, not just the video file’s playback rate (YouTube encoder settings).
- Test before going public: Start the encoder feed, check the Live Control Room preview, and verify audio and video. Monitor stream health and messages during the broadcast. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend testing and checking quality (YouTube live-streaming tips).
YouTube’s current help page says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Platform behavior can change, so check YouTube’s current guidance before relying on an archive (YouTube archive guidance).

Common problems and what to check
- The video plays once and stops: For a single file, check Loop in Media Source properties. For a playlist, check Loop Playlist in VLC Video properties; enabling one does not enable the other.
- VLC Video is missing from the source menu: Install VLC, then restart or reopen OBS if necessary. For 64-bit OBS, use 64-bit VLC.
- The video restarts when changing scenes: Review Media Source’s Restart playback when source becomes active option. It controls activation behavior, separately from looping at the end.
- The broadcast is unstable or YouTube reports poor stream health: Check the outgoing bitrate against upload capacity, leave YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom, and inspect encoder settings and Live Control Room messages.
- The playlist transition has a gap: OBS documentation does not guarantee gapless looping. Check the behavior with your files and installed software versions rather than assuming the boundary will be seamless.
