YouTube recommends keyframes every two seconds and says the interval should not exceed four seconds. At 30 fps, that is 60 frames—not two frames.
What the keyframe interval means
A keyframe, also called an I-frame, is a complete video frame that lets a decoder begin reconstructing the picture without relying on earlier frames. The keyframe interval is the time or number of frames between those complete frames. In video-encoding settings, the interval is also commonly described as the GOP (group of pictures) length.
For YouTube Live, use the two-second target. The interval is a duration, so the equivalent frame count depends on the video frame rate.

These are conversions of the two-second interval: multiply the frame rate by two. YouTube’s own troubleshooting example specifically gives 60 frames at 30 fps.

Set the interval in OBS
OBS labels and available controls can vary with its version, selected output mode, encoder, and streaming service. The usual place to look is the streaming encoder’s output settings. In Advanced Output mode, the path is generally Settings > Output > Output Mode > Advanced > Streaming; the exact field may be labeled “Keyframe Interval” or similarly. If you cannot find it, confirm that you are viewing the streaming encoder settings rather than recording settings.
- Open OBS settings. Select Settings, then Output.
- Show advanced output controls if needed. Set Output Mode to Advanced, then open the Streaming section.
- Set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds. If the field accepts seconds, enter 2. Do not enter 2 in a field that expects frames.
- If the encoder asks for frames, calculate the equivalent. Multiply your selected frame rate by two: at 30 fps, use 60 frames; at 60 fps, use 120.
- Apply the setting and verify the stream. Test before an important broadcast and check YouTube’s stream health once the stream is sending.
YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance says to change the stream so keyframes are sent every two seconds. It also states that the frequency must be four seconds or less. Treat two seconds as the target, not four seconds as an alternative recommendation.

Check the rest of YouTube’s encoder settings
Keyframe interval is only one part of the outgoing stream. YouTube’s published guidance for RTMP/RTMPS lists these adjacent settings:
- Protocol: RTMP or RTMPS; YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport.
- Video codecs: H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1. Whether a particular option appears depends on the encoder and device you use.
- Frame rate: up to 60 fps.
- Bitrate encoding: CBR (constant bitrate).
- Audio codecs: AAC or MP3.
Use the bitrate guidance shown for your selected resolution and frame rate in YouTube’s current encoder settings. The keyframe interval does not determine the bitrate. YouTube says it detects encoder settings and transcodes live streams into formats for viewers, but that does not remove the need to send a stable, correctly configured input stream.

Troubleshoot a keyframe-frequency warning
The interval is set to 2, but YouTube still reports an error
Check what the encoder is actually sending, not only the number displayed in OBS. Confirm that the streaming encoder—not a recording profile or a different output—is using the two-second interval. If the control takes frames, recalculate using the active frame rate. YouTube notes that ingestion errors can result in incorrect GOP sizes, so a persistent warning may not be explained by the visible setting alone.
The stream looks choppy or unstable
A two-second keyframe interval is not a fix for every stream-health problem. Check YouTube’s stream-health messages and make sure the selected quality is reliable for your upload connection. YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the actual event and monitoring stream health while live.

The setting is missing or has a different unit
Check the selected output mode, encoder, and streaming service. A service-specific configuration or a different encoder can change which controls OBS exposes. If a custom encoder parameter asks for a frame count, convert seconds to frames rather than assuming the value is in seconds. Do not assume a universal OBS default: the available setting and its presentation can vary.
