Short answer: StreamYard is the more direct option for browser-based interviews when you want separate 4K files for each participant and meet its plan and device requirements. OBS gives you more hands-on control over desktop recording settings, but whether it can record your particular 4K workload smoothly depends on your computer, encoder, frame rate, and scene complexity. Neither option should be confused with a guarantee of 4K live streaming: StreamYard’s live-stream limit is 1080p, while OBS output depends on your configuration and streaming platform.
StreamYard vs. OBS for 4K recording
The main difference is workflow. StreamYard is a browser-based studio with local recordings of individual participants; OBS is desktop software that lets you configure recording output, encoder, format, and sources. These are capability differences documented by the products, not results of a comparative performance test.
| Need | StreamYard | OBS |
|---|---|---|
| 4K live broadcast | No. StreamYard says its live streams currently top out at 1080p. | Recording and output settings are configurable, but actual 4K streaming depends on the platform, settings, and computer. The cited OBS guide does not establish a platform-specific 4K live-stream promise. |
| 4K local recording | Eligible plans can provide 4K local participant tracks when local recording is enabled and the camera and device support 4K. The cloud-mixed recording remains limited to the stream resolution, up to 1080p. | You can configure recording output and rescaling. Practical results depend on encoder choice and available system capacity. |
| Multi-person browser interview | Local recording creates separate participant tracks. Browser-studio and plan requirements apply. | OBS records scenes and sources on the desktop. A remote-guest workflow requires additional setup beyond the recording controls covered here. |
| Output control | Resolution is tied to studio settings, and 4K local recording has plan requirements. | Recording format, quality, encoder, audio tracks, and output rescaling are configurable. |
When StreamYard is the better fit
Choose StreamYard if you are recording a browser-based interview, webinar, or guest session and value individual files for each participant over detailed desktop encoding controls. Local tracks are recorded on participants’ devices, so their capture quality is not tied to the internet connection in the same way as a cloud-mixed recording. The main camera feed’s studio resolution determines the track resolution.
Check 4K eligibility and equipment
- StreamYard’s 4K support article names Advanced, Teams, and Business as eligible plans. Its current pricing page lists 4K (2160p) local recordings under Advanced; check the plan details before subscribing because offerings can change.
- Enable local recording in the studio before the session.
- Use a 4K-capable camera or webcam and a device that supports 4K capture.
- Allow device storage for the session. StreamYard recommends 5 GB of available storage for most users; this is an operational recommendation, not a guaranteed file-size estimate.
- Avoid private or incognito browser windows: temporary local data may not persist after the window closes.
Local files are stored in the browser first and uploaded after recording. That makes reliable device storage and allowing the upload to finish important parts of the workflow. StreamYard’s local-recording guide gives bitrate recommendations for standard 1080p sessions; those figures should not be treated as 4K encoding settings.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
On the Free plan, StreamYard’s pricing page lists 2 hours of local recording per month. The same page lists 4K local recording on Advanced and notes that plan pricing may vary with promotions, renewal terms, and custom offers.
When OBS is the better fit
Choose OBS if you need to capture desktop sources, build custom scenes, or directly manage recording and encoding settings. It does not gate 4K recording behind a specific recording tier in the cited guide, but that does not mean every computer can handle every 4K workload. OBS says performance depends substantially on the encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity.

Configure a recording
- Open Settings > Output and select the recording controls. Set the recording path, format, quality, and encoder to suit your workflow.
- If you use Advanced output mode, choose any needed audio tracks and configure output rescaling while maintaining the aspect ratio. A recording output that differs from “Same as stream” uses additional computer resources.
- Prefer MKV if you want more protection against an interrupted recording. The OBS Project’s Standard Recording Output Guide (2023-05-26) says: “MKV is recommended in case of unforeseen issues arising, since MKV will not corrupt the whole file if there is no graceful stoppage of recording.” OBS can remux a completed MKV recording to MP4 using its built-in tool.
- Make a test recording using the target resolution, frame rate, encoder, and a representative scene before relying on the setup. Check playback, audio, and whether the computer remains responsive.
OBS profiles can save video and output settings, which is useful for keeping separate configurations—for example, a 1080p profile and a 4K profile. A profile organizes settings; it does not reduce the hardware workload.
Which one should you choose?
- Pick StreamYard for a browser-based guest recording where individual participant tracks and a simpler studio workflow matter most, provided your plan, camera, and device meet its 4K requirements.
- Pick OBS for desktop capture, custom scenes, or direct control over the encoder and recording output—and when you can test performance on the computer you will use.
- Do not choose either solely on the phrase “4K recording.” Confirm whether you need 4K local files, a mixed export, or a 4K live broadcast; these are different outputs.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded videos playing as a 24/7 YouTube live stream rather than record an interview, StreamNeo is a different kind of tool: it loops uploaded videos from the cloud, not live camera footage. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Your computer does not have to stay on at home. Videos stream as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; StreamNeo can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start the free day.
